The AeroPress Original is for making one person’s coffee routine easy to repeat. Its appeal is a short, bounded sequence built around a single drink. Run that same sequence three times before work and the appeal thins out fast.
It lists at $54.95 in Canadian dollars at AeroPress and on Amazon.ca, and the brewer is only part of the bill: paper filters are bought separately in 350-count packs. The price buys a process, not a guaranteed better cup, and nothing here establishes that this method tastes better than a drip or a French press.
Our verdict
A practical manual option for one coffee drinker; less suitable for serving a household in a single batch.
- A good fit for
- A single drinker after a compact brewer who is comfortable measuring, waiting, pressing, and rinsing.
- We would skip it if
- You want unattended brewing, several large mugs at once, or the workflow of a pump espresso machine.
Reasons to consider it
- A small brewer supports a repeatable personal routine
- Published care instructions allow top-rack dishwasher cleaning
The compromises
- The chamber size needs to be understood before interpreting the cup count
- Manual pressing and separate filters add handling steps
What we have not verified: No blind tasting, no pressure measurement, and no assessment of how much force the press takes for different hands.
The things in this guide
A closer look at the products, who they may suit, and what to check before buying.

Original Coffee Maker
Suits anyone drawn to a timed immersion, a press, and cleanup that takes ten seconds.
Before you buy: Check the serving capacity, and follow the manufacturer's method with a sturdy vessel underneath.
Price checked October 17, 2026. Retailer prices can change.Read the chamber capacity before the cup count
AeroPress lists a 10 oz chamber next to a one-to-two-cup description, and its FAQ splits the answer: up to three espresso-style shots, or one 10 oz serving if all the water goes through the grounds. Plan around the ounces. A concentrate diluted afterwards is a different serving plan from brewing the finished drink in one pass.
One person absorbs that easily. Two people leaving at eight o'clock do not, because the second brew starts after the first is finished. Work back from the drinks you actually serve instead of redefining a cup to fit the chamber. AeroPress also sells an Original XL with a 20 oz capacity at $109.95, twice the price for twice the chamber.
Choose a process you can repeat on an ordinary morning
The method is immersion, filtration and a manual press. The product page describes endless espresso-style recipes, but it gives no pressure rating; read that phrase as a recipe name, not a claim about espresso-machine pressure. Buy the process, not the vocabulary.
Begin with one recipe you can repeat. Change the dose, the grind, the time and the water together and a bad cup tells you nothing. Get a baseline before the internet sells you a metal filter or a $34.95 Flow Control Filter Cap.
The mug and the cleanup are part of the equipment
AeroPress gives a compatible mug opening range of 67 to 95mm for the Original and permits top-shelf dishwasher cleaning, though its FAQ says a rinse is sufficient because the plunger wipes the chamber. The page also tells you to use a sturdy mug or carafe. A styled product photograph is not a reason to assume any nearby glass is appropriate.
Paper filters are the running cost: a 350-count pack of standard micro-filters is $12.95 on Amazon.ca, sold by AeroPress, Inc. Decide where the spent puck goes before you brew, particularly in a hotel room or a shared office kitchen. The brewer is the small part of that.
Buy the Original when the routine fits, then stop upgrading
If a dripper already works for you, this needs a concrete reason: a different sequence you want, or a second brewer for the office. The one-year warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship, not a cup you end up disliking.
Positive for one drinker who accepts the handling. Awkward pressing, cleanup that starts getting skipped, or a household that regularly needs four cups would each end that. Those matter more than how many recipes exist online.
