CATAN 6th Edition Review: $56.95 Seats Four, and a Fifth Seat Costs Extra

Amazon.ca sells the 6th Edition itself for $56.95; it seats three or four and runs an hour or more, and the 5-6 player expansion is a separate purchase that Amazon.ca did not sell itself on 2026-10-16.

THE SHORT VERSION

CATAN is Klaus Teuber's trading-and-building design, in its sixth edition since 2025. Amazon.ca lists the English-language 6th Edition (item model CN3081, ASIN B0DYK1ZH2D) at $56.95 in Canadian dollars on 2026-10-16: in stock, with Amazon.ca as both shipper and seller, free delivery, and a 45-day window for return, refund or replacement. Asmodee Canada, the publisher's Canadian arm, carries the same game on its own site as a 3 to 4 player title for ages 10 and up, though that page shows no price and sends shoppers on to retailers.

Two Canadian conditions shape the decision. On the base-game listing the 5th Edition style shows as currently unavailable, so the usual question of whether to buy the outgoing printing mostly disappears here. The fifth and sixth seats are a different story: the English 5-6 Player Expansion had no Amazon.ca-sold offer that day, so the price of a bigger table depends on third-party sellers and can move.

Our verdict

At $56.95 from Amazon.ca, CATAN's 6th Edition is a sound first strategy game for tables of three and four; five or six players need a separate expansion, and Amazon.ca did not sell it itself on 2026-10-16.

A good fit for
Families and casual groups of three, sometimes four, buying a first strategy board game, and gift buyers who want the current edition of a name the recipient will recognize.
We would skip it if
Your table is usually two players, or a working fifth-edition set is on your shelf and you want nothing beyond new art and a new rulebook layout.

Reasons to consider it

  • Asmodee Canada's box list is complete for up to four players: 19 terrain hexes, 6 sea frame pieces, 60 roads, 20 settlements, 16 cities, 95 resource cards, 25 development cards, a robber and two dice
  • Amazon.ca sells and ships the game itself and accepts returns, refunds or replacements for 45 days after receipt, which covers a copy with missing or defective parts
  • CATAN's own compatibility page says the sixth and earlier editions can be used together, so an older expansion is not stranded

The compromises

  • Player count tops out at four; five or six players need the separate 5-6 Player Expansion, which Amazon.ca listed only through third-party sellers on 2026-10-16
  • Some card backs differ from earlier editions and the wooden roads are slightly larger; the publisher points mismatched sets to card sleeves or replacement cards
  • No warranty is published: CATAN Studio sends owners of a new game with missing or defective pieces back to the retailer for a replacement copy

What we have not verified: Amazon.ca's title says 90 to 120 minutes, its comparison table 60 to 90 and Asmodee Canada 60 to 120; the longer figure is the safer budget for new players. Asmodee Canada's box list shows 9 extra harbour pieces while CATAN's compatibility page says the base game no longer contains port markers; neither was checked against a physical box. Prices are single-day readings from 2026-10-16.

CATAN: The Game (6th Edition)

At $56.95 sold and shipped by Amazon.ca, it is the edition the publisher's current Canadian range is built around, and the 45-day return window covers a box with missing parts.

Before you buy: The base box tops out at four players, and a group of five or six must buy an expansion that Amazon.ca did not sell itself on the day checked.

What changed in the sixth edition

CATAN's compatibility page lists what the new printing altered: new box sizes, box art, internal art and rulebook layouts across the line. The wooden roads are slightly larger, the 5-6 player expansions swap brown for purple, and the base game no longer contains port markers, which the page says now come with Seafarers.

Asmodee Canada's box list complicates the last point, since it names 9 extra harbour pieces in the base box. Neither source was checked against a physical copy, so harbours are a question to put to the retailer if they matter to you.

The practical result is that an earlier expansion still plays with this base game. Card backs differ in some combinations, and roads of two sizes share the board. CATAN's answer is card sleeves or replacement cards, which the page says come from the CATAN Shop.

What is in the box, and what covers a bad copy

Asmodee Canada lists 19 hexagonal region tiles, 6 sea frame pieces, 20 wooden settlements, 16 wooden cities and 60 wooden roads, 95 resource cards and 25 development cards, 4 building cost cards, 2 special bonus cards, 18 number tokens, 2 dice, a wooden robber and a rulebook with almanac. That is everything a game of up to four needs. The list does not mention card trays. Amazon.ca gives the box as 29.72 by 9.4 cm and 1.2 kg.

No warranty is published for the game. CATAN Studio's support page says a new game from an authorized seller that is missing pieces or is defective goes back to the retailer for a replacement copy. Here the retailer is Amazon.ca itself, with a return, refund or replacement window of 45 days from receipt.

For worn pieces later, the same page points to CatanShop.com for replacement card decks, an authorized Etsy shop, or a used copy bought for parts. Whether CatanShop.com ships to Canada was not checked.

The player count, and what a fifth seat costs

Asmodee Canada lists 3 to 4 players, ages 10 and up and 60 to 120 minutes; Amazon.ca's title says 90 to 120. Budget the longer figure with new players. Neither listing gives a two-player count.

Five or six players need the 5-6 Player Expansion. Amazon.ca showed no featured offer for the English edition on 2026-10-16; its options were third-party sellers, the lowest of them $51.49 from Amazon US, with Amazon's own warning that international products may differ from local ones. Third-party prices move, so treat that as a snapshot and check the listing before counting on it.

The alternatives start lower on the count. Ticket to Ride's Refresh covers 2 to 5 players in 60 to 90 minutes at $59.94, and Carcassonne plays 2 to 5 in 30 to 45 minutes at $41.95, both sold by Amazon.ca. Wingspan seats 1 to 5 in 40 to 70 minutes at $76 direct from Stonemaier's Canadian store, against a $90 regular price with no end date shown. CATAN is the only one of the four that needs three players to start.

New buyer or old owner: which edition to buy

New to the game: buy the sixth edition. On the Amazon.ca base-game listing the 5th Edition style shows as currently unavailable, and the English 6th Edition is the style with an Amazon.ca offer. The listing shows no printed list price, so there is no discount to chase at $56.95.

Own the fifth edition already, with expansions: keep it. The publisher says the editions can be played together, so a new base box buys new art and a new rulebook layout rather than access to anything. The exception is a worn-out copy, where the $56.95 sixth edition replaces it and shares card backs with any sixth-edition expansion bought later.
