The FURminator Undercoat deShedding Tool for medium long-haired dogs is a stainless steel edge on an ergonomic handle: a curved skin guard rides the dog while the comb reaches through the topcoat for loose undercoat, and a FURejector button pushes collected hair off the teeth. FURminator, a Spectrum Brands brand that dates its start to 2002, still lists this size on its Canadian site, furminator.ca, and claims up to 90 percent less loose hair with regular use. Prices here are in Canadian dollars: PetSmart Canada and Amazon.ca both list the Medium at $51.99 on 2026-10-16, and Amazon.ca showed it In Stock, shipped and sold by Amazon.ca, with a 30-day return window.
Everything about the tool is a matching exercise: edge to weight band and coat length, session to the once-or-twice-weekly cadence, coat condition to the dry-and-mat-free requirement. A guarded edge used on the wrong dog or the wrong coat still meets skin it should not.
Our verdict
Buy the Medium Long Hair tool at $51.99 for a 25-to-50-pound shedding dog and keep the weekly cadence; matted coats need a dematter first, and dogs outside the band need a different edge.
- A good fit for
- Owners of 25-to-50-pound long-haired shedding dogs who will run 10-to-20-minute sessions once or twice a week, on a dry, brushed-out coat.
- We would skip it if
- Skip it for non-shedding breeds, particularly sensitive skin, or a matted coat — the teeth can bend — and match dogs under 25 or over 50 pounds to the small or large edge instead.
Reasons to consider it
- The stainless steel edge sits behind a curved skin guard that the brand says glides over skin and keeps the edge from digging in at the ends of a stroke
- A FURejector button pushes collected hair off the teeth mid-session, and pressing it while pulling back locks the built-in Edge Guard for cap-free storage
- PetSmart Canada and Amazon.ca list the Medium at $51.99, and furminator.ca lists small, medium and large dog tools, each in long and short hair, so matching the tool to the dog takes two facts
The compromises
- The no-cut claim is asterisked "when used as directed," and the maker's directions concede that deep or rough brushing can still irritate skin, so pressure discipline stays with the hand holding the tool
- Undercoat is the whole scope: the FAQ excludes non-shedding breeds and particularly sensitive skin, and a matted or tangled coat needs a dematter or rake first or the teeth can bend or break
- The maker's anti-counterfeit page names Amazon marketplaces among the places fakes turn up and tells buyers to read who actually sells the item; on Amazon.ca the Medium Long Hair listing read Shipper / Seller Amazon.ca on 2026-10-16
What we have not verified: The edge's working width appears nowhere. furminator.ca gives no sizing at all, and the two retailers' dimension lines disagree, so the weight bands from PetSmart Canada and Pet Valu carry the sizing. The up-to-90-percent figure rests on the brand's regular-use wording, with no independent test behind it. Pet Valu shows $38.99 against a crossed-out $51.99 with no end date, and whether that is a lasting price is unknown. Amazon.ca also carries a second FURminator Medium Long Hair listing with a 9-to-23-kg title, a three-to-four-day ship estimate and at least one size option sold by a third party; how it relates to the main listing is not stated.
The things in this guide
A closer look at the products, who they may suit, and what to check before buying.

Undercoat deShedding Tool (Medium Dog, Long Hair)
$51.99 at PetSmart Canada and at Amazon.ca (In Stock, shipped and sold by Amazon.ca) buys a guarded stainless edge sized to dogs 25 to 50 pounds with long hair, a FURejector button that clears hair mid-session, and an Edge Guard for cap-free storage.
Before you buy: The no-cut claim holds only when used as directed: dry coat, mats removed first, gentle strokes, no sensitive skin. Dogs outside the weight band need the small or large edge.
The edge and the asterisk
The headline claim runs: a stainless steel deShedding edge that reaches through the topcoat to remove loose hair and undercoat without damaging the topcoat or cutting the skin, with an asterisk, when used as directed. The maker's directions define directed use. Work like a brush, in the direction of hair growth, teeth angled toward the coat, starting at the head and working back, with extra care near the stomach, legs, genitals and anus. Fewer long, gentle strokes up and away from the skin; no excessive stroking in one spot.
The asterisk points at real conditions. The directions concede that deep or rough brushing can still irritate pet skin even with the skin guard, so pressure stays limited and any redness or irritation ends the session. That curved guard is the engineering under the promise, since it keeps the edge from digging in at the ends of a stroke, but a guard plus a heavy hand still lands on the dog. The FAQ draws the boundary around the claim: most animals that shed qualify, while non-shedding breeds and particularly sensitive skin do not. furminator.ca and PetSmart Canada also repeat a money-back guarantee that points to the product label for its terms; the label was not read.
One design, six dog variants
Three sizes, two coat lengths: furminator.ca lists small, medium and large dog tools, each in Long Hair and Short Hair, with cat versions alongside. The weight bands come from the retailers rather than the maker's Canadian pages: medium is 25 to 50 pounds, and PetSmart Canada's Large selection reads over 50. Pet Valu's list prices step gently with size, $49.99 for small, $51.99 for medium and $54.99 for large, so choosing the wrong size costs little compared with the cost of using it on the wrong dog.
Nowhere does an edge width appear. PetSmart Canada prints 6.5 x 2 x 8.75 without units and repeats it for the Large, while Pet Valu prints 15.7 cm by 8.1 cm for the Medium, so the weight band and the coat length are the whole usable sizing system. The maker's instruction is to match the weight band, then match the coat length. A 40-pound short-coated dog belongs on the Short Hair edge; a 60-pounder on the large one.
Ten to twenty minutes, once or twice a week
The FAQ schedule reads one to two sessions a week, 10 to 20 minutes each, varying with breed, coat condition and thickness, with more frequent sessions during heavy shedding seasons; Pet Valu's copy says best used weekly for dogs with double coats. Timing carries a condition in the maker's directions: any time on a completely dry coat, ideally right after washing or drying. Preparation comes first: a full inspection for sores, bruises and skin conditions, with a veterinarian before brushing if any turn up, and tangles or mats removed with a dematting tool or grooming rake before the edge touches fur.
Mats are the teeth's stated enemy: work the tool over matted or tangled fur and the teeth can bend or break, besides hurting the dog. Aftercare is short — warm water and mild soap when dander collects on the edge, a complete dry before storage, and the built-in Edge Guard locked over the teeth by pressing the FURejector button and pulling back, which stores the tool without a cap. The FURejector does double duty mid-session, pushing accumulated hair off the teeth so the session keeps moving.
Where to buy it, and the fakes
Counterfeit deShedding tools circulate on auction, forum and marketplace sites, and the maker's page names eBay, Craigslist and Amazon; in its words they often do not work properly and are known to break easily, creating the potential to seriously injure both pets and people. Its advice is to buy from a recognized FURminator retailer; a store you can visit carries lower risk than an online reseller. Its sharpest tool is the sold-versus-shipped distinction: Amazon may ship an order while an unrelated store is the one actually selling it.
In Canada that check currently comes back clean at three counters. PetSmart Canada and Pet Valu are both national pet chains, and the Amazon.ca Medium Long Hair listing read Shipper / Seller Amazon.ca. The seller line still deserves a look at checkout: a second Amazon.ca FURminator Medium Long Hair listing, titled 9-23 kg, showed a three-to-four-day ship estimate, $73.91 for one size option, and one option sold by a third party. The page does not say whether it is genuine. Pet Valu's $38.99 has no end date, so the verdict starts from $51.99. One scoping note: furminator.ca's home page carries a recall notice for certain lots of the one-gallon deShedding conditioner, a liquid; it names no tool.
Who should skip it
FURminator's exclusions write most of the skip list: non-shedding breeds and pets with particularly sensitive skin should not use the tool at all; a dog with sores or a skin condition needs a veterinarian before any brushing; a matted coat goes to a dematter or rake first, and heavy matting is a groomer's job rather than a weekly edge's. Sizing cuts another slice, since dogs under 25 or over 50 pounds belong on the small or large version, not this one.
Scope does the rest. This edge pulls loose undercoat on the dog, and the up-to-90-percent reduction figure is the brand's regular-use claim, with the weekly session above as what regular means. Hair already on the couch is the couch tool's problem; a reusable roller covers that side without involving the animal. An owner unwilling to spend twenty minutes a week on the coat is outside the condition the claim is written on.
