In this guide
A gift that comes in colours carries a risk the giver takes on alone: the order sits under the giver's name and email, and the recipient cannot walk it back to the maker. This guide reads two items through one question, what a wrong colour costs the buyer in dollars and in days, with prices in Canadian dollars.
The two are a $39.95 packable tote and a $59.99 strapped neck pillow, $99.94 together. Only the tote is under $50. Both come with a 30-day return term, but the tote's days start at purchase and the pillow's start on delivery. Peak Design lists an exchange among its return options; the Amazon.ca page lists only return, refund or replacement.
The things in this guide
A closer look at the products, who they may suit, and what to check before buying.

Packable Tote, 12 L, Charcoal
A 12 L zip-top tote at $39.95 from Peak Design Canada is a low-stakes colour choice, and returns run 30 days from purchase on everything except apparel.
Before you buy: Customers outside the US pay shipping, import duties and customs fees on a return shipment, and the policy prices none of them. The no-fee line for exchanges sits under its US heading only, and a warranty claim starts from an account registration.

Evolution S3 Neck Pillow · Steel
Amazon.ca sells it at $59.99 from Cabeau's own store, shipped by Amazon, with return, refund or replacement eligible within 30 days of receipt.
Before you buy: It is over $50, and Amazon's page says nothing about swapping colours. Cabeau's own lifetime replacement needs registration within 30 days of purchase, and a refund on a purchase made elsewhere is handled by that retailer.

Peak Design gives 30 days from purchase, and an international order ships from the closest international warehouse and usually arrives in 4 to 10 business days, so transit comes out of the same 30. Amazon.ca's pillow page says return, refund or replacement within 30 days of receipt, so its days start when the parcel arrives. Neither page describes a holiday extension.
Run the sum on a real calendar. A tote ordered on 20 November has its window close on 20 December, five days before it is unwrapped. A pillow ordered the same day and delivered on 24 November closes on 24 December, one day short. Buying early is sensible for stock and delivery and wrong for anything the recipient might want to swap, so settle the colour before the giving.
What a wrong colour costs, product by product
Peak Design's return policy offers a refund, an exchange for a different product or store credit, within 30 days of purchase and apparel excluded. For customers outside the US, shipping fees, import duties and customs fees on the return shipment are theirs, and no Canadian carrier or amount is named. The line that exchanges carry no shipping fee sits under the US heading, so do not assume it holds for a Canadian order. On a $39.95 tote, an unpriced return shipment could take a large share of what the gift cost.
The Amazon.ca page lists return, refund or replacement and says nothing more about cost or colour changes. A wrong Steel may therefore mean a return plus a second $59.99 order for Indigo or Jet Black, and no fee is named either way.
The warranties are written for whoever registers
Cabeau's lifetime replacement works only if the pillow is registered with Cabeau Club within 30 days of purchase, and a warranty claim wants proof of purchase naming the store, the date and the order number. A gift handed over in week five has already lost the lifetime benefit unless the giver registered it first, and the receipt in question belongs to the giver.
Peak Design's claim begins in a Peak Design account, where the product is registered before a claim is submitted. Neither page says how a gift moves from the buyer's name to the recipient's. Pass on the order receipt with the gift, and register on the recipient's behalf where a form allows it.
When to skip the colour-dependent gift
Skip the pillow if $59.99 breaks the budget, if the recipient sleeps in seats with no reachable headrest (Amazon's page says the straps can instead go around the width of the seat back), or if you are guessing between Steel, Indigo and Jet Black for someone who cares which. Skip the tote if a folding carrier bag from the grocery checkout would do the same job.
If the gift will be bought more than a month before the occasion and the recipient might want another colour, neither page leaves the giver whole: Amazon.ca's describes a return or replacement, not a colour swap, and Peak Design says outright that customers outside the US pay return shipping, duties and customs fees. Every term above comes from the maker and Amazon.ca pages cited, read on the date shown.
