JanSport SuperBreak Plus Review: The Fifty-Five Dollar School Bag That Grew A Laptop Sleeve

A 26-litre pack at $55 with a padded 15-inch laptop sleeve, a bottle pocket and a front organizer, weighing 0.4 kg. It carries books, not weight, and the warranty is meant to outlast the school years.

THE SHORT VERSION

The SuperBreak is the JanSport most people can draw from memory: one big zippered compartment, one front pocket, two padded straps, a woven label. The SuperBreak Plus keeps that outline and adds a padded laptop sleeve inside and a bottle pocket on the side. On JanSport's Canadian store the Black version (style JS0A4QUE) lists at $55 in Canadian dollars; the same page sells embroidered versions at $75.

The additions matter more than they sound. A school bag now carries a Chromebook or laptop nearly every day, and the original SuperBreak had nowhere to put one except loose among the binders. The question for a parent is whether a soft, frameless bag with a sleeve is enough, or whether the load has grown into something that needs a bigger, stiffer pack like JanSport's own Big Student.

Our verdict

A $55 one-compartment school pack that adds a laptop sleeve and a bottle pocket without adding structure or much weight; buy it for a middle or high schooler with a laptop and a normal load of books.

A good fit for
A student from about Grade 6 up who carries a Chromebook or a 13- to 15-inch laptop, a water bottle and a few binders, and whose family wants the bag to outlast the school year.
We would skip it if
The child is in early elementary and 42 cm will hang below their hips, or the daily load is big enough to call for a hip belt, a sternum strap or a stiff frame.

Reasons to consider it

  • Padded internal sleeve for a 15-inch laptop (40 by 32 cm) inside a 26 L compartment, at 0.4 kg total weight
  • Side bottle pocket and a front zip pocket with a built-in organizer, plus cord zipper tabs and a webbing grab handle
  • Limited lifetime warranty for manufacturing defects, and 30-day returns with a prepaid label

The compromises

  • One main compartment with no divider, so books, lunch and a laptop share the same space
  • No sternum strap, hip belt or frame; the padded back panel and straight-cut straps are the whole suspension
  • The Black solid is $55, the same as most prints, and the page says the liner colour is changing to a darker shade

What we have not verified: The pack was not loaded or worn here. Zipper life under a school year of daily use, how the shell resists rain, and whether the sleeve padding survives a hallway drop are open questions; the page gives no water rating.

A sleeve and a bottle pocket on the same old shell

JanSport's own description is a single sentence: the Plus is the classic SuperBreak with an internal laptop sleeve and a side water bottle pocket. The feature list fills that out. The sleeve is padded and sized for a 15-inch laptop, with a stated laptop area of 40 by 32 cm, and it sits against the fully padded back panel inside the main compartment. The front pocket has a built-in organizer for pens and small items, the top has a webbing grab handle, and the zipper pulls carry cord tabs.

Capacity is 26 litres in a body measuring 42 by 32 by 13 cm. Weight is 0.4 kg, which is the number that separates this from bigger student packs: it is a bag that disappears when empty. The main compartment has no divider, so a laptop in the sleeve shares the space with binders, lunch and whatever else went in, and the bottle pocket is the only pocket outside the two zippers.

What the shell is made of, and what it does not say

JanSport's fabric line reads 100% recycled 600-denier polyester on prints and solids, then adds that the SuperBreak Plus family uses a variety of fabrics, so an embroidered or specialty version may differ from the Black solid. The feature list calls the 600-denier construction built to last. It states no water rating for the shell or the zippers, so nothing on the page supports a claim about rain; a rain cover or a bin bag in the base is a cheap hedge for a wet walk to school.

One more note on the Black colourway: JanSport flags that internal liner colours may vary during a transition to a darker liner, so two identical packs bought a few weeks apart may not match inside.

Repair first, replace if needed, for the original owner

JanSport's warranty covers its packs, bags, pouches, totes and cases against manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship for the lifetime of the product, and it runs to the original owner. The stated remedy is repair without charge, or replacement at the brand's discretion. Accidents, improper care, negligence, normal wear and the natural breakdown of colours and materials over long use are excluded, and only unaltered items are covered. The claim form asks for the order number, or the word 'unknown' if you have none, plus photographs of the damage and of the tag with the style number.

Returns are separate and shorter. An unused, unaltered pack can go back within 30 days of purchase with the prepaid Purolator or TForce label, refunded to the original payment method minus the original shipping charge, and the refund can take up to three weeks. Exchanges are not offered. JanSport currently offers free standard shipping on orders of $50 and over, which this pack clears; the shipping page words it as a current offer, so confirm it at checkout, since standard shipping is otherwise $10. The practical protection for a school bag bought in August is the warranty, and its usefulness depends on whether a broken zipper in October reads as a defect or as wear.

$55 against the $70 Big Student

At $55 the Black SuperBreak Plus sits $15 under the Black Big Student at $70, and $20 under the embroidered versions of itself. The Big Student is the comparison worth making because it is the pack a parent buys when the SuperBreak stops being enough: 34 litres against 26, a body of 43.5 by 32.5 by 19 cm, a weight of 0.65 kg, ergonomic S-curve straps and a zipped sleeve for a 15.5-inch laptop.

The extra $15 buys eight litres, six centimetres of depth and better straps, at a cost of 0.25 kg on the child's back before anything goes in. For a student whose daily load is a laptop, two binders and a bottle, the SuperBreak Plus is the lighter and cheaper answer. For a load of four textbooks and a lunch bag, the smaller pack will be full every morning and the money saved will be spent on a replacement sooner.

Skip it for small children and heavy loads

The SuperBreak Plus is a teenager's bag in proportion. A pack 42 cm high will sit low on a second grader, and a 26-litre compartment with a laptop sleeve is more bag than a child that age carries. Younger children are better served by a smaller pack with a chest clip.

It is also the wrong bag for weight. There is no sternum strap, no hip belt and no frame, so a load of textbooks hangs from two padded straps and a padded panel. If the school day involves a full set of books, or a long walk with the pack loaded, step up to a pack with real suspension. Buy the SuperBreak Plus for a light daily load and a laptop, and for a warranty that has been the same promise since 1967.
