Gifts for Her: Size It by a Number She Already Knows

Gifts that get returned are usually guessed at. A packable tote and an eight-litre dry bag can be sized from something she already has, her phone model or her pack, because both makers print the figure a giver needs.

THE SHORT VERSION

Guessing is how gifts fail. Taste can be forgiven; size cannot, because a bag that does not fit its pocket is noticed on first use and every use after. The way round it is to measure something she already has, the phone in her pocket or the pack the gift will live inside, instead of asking her.

Two items are read against that kind of number here, with prices in Canadian dollars: a $39.95 tote that folds into its own pocket and a $34.95 eight-litre dry bag. Each maker prints the figure a giver needs, so the remaining question is what a wrong guess costs to undo, and the two return terms differ.

The things in this guide

A closer look at the products, who they may suit, and what to check before buying.

Peak Design Packable Tote, 12 L, Charcoal
Match the phone: its sewn-in pocket takes up to an iPhone 13 Pro

Packable Tote, 12 L, Charcoal

Peak Design's Canadian store lists the Packable Tote at $39.95: 12 L, 80 g, 42 by 41 by 12 cm open and 15 by 9 by 4 cm packed. The stuff-sack becomes an inside pocket that the maker says holds an iPhone 12 or 13 in the standard or Pro size and not the Max, so her phone model is the sizing figure.

Before you buy: It is unstructured 70D nylon on one shoulder strap, so it lives inside another bag. Lifetime cover for defects needs registering the tote in a Peak Design account, and replacements may be refurbished stock.

Sea to Summit Lightweight Dry Bag, 8 L, Beluga
Match the pack it goes into: 8 L, 39 cm tall rolled, 67 g

Lightweight Dry Bag, 8 L, Beluga

Sea to Summit Canada lists the 8 L Lightweight Dry Bag at $34.95 in five colours, 39 cm tall with the top rolled three times on a 16.5 by 19.9 cm base, at 67 g, with an oval base and a roll-top closure. Those figures can be held against the lid pocket or main compartment of the pack she already carries.

Before you buy: A soft roll-top sack for the inside of a pack, not a structured case. Its own 60-day returns cover only bags bought from seatosummit.com, and a $5 label fee comes off the refund.

The number is already in her pocket or her pack

A giver who asks what someone wants gets a polite non-answer; a giver who looks at what she carries gets a measurement. Her phone has a model name that fixes its dimensions. Her weekend pack has a lid pocket with a depth and a main compartment with a base. Neither needs a conversation, and each turns a category into one correct size.

Both makers publish the matching figure. Peak Design's Packable Tote, $39.95, opens to 42 by 41 by 12 cm and packs to 15 by 9 by 4 cm at 80 g. Its own sack turns into an inside pocket, and by the maker's note it takes an iPhone 12 or 13 in the standard or Pro size but not the Max, so her phone model says whether that pocket gets used. Sea to Summit lists the 8 L Lightweight Dry Bag at $34.95 with a spec table of 16.5 by 19.9 by 39 cm and 67 g, the 39 cm being its height with the top rolled three times, to be held against the pack it is meant to sit in.

What a wrong guess costs to undo on each bag

Peak Design gives 30 days to return. Its FAQ is one text shared by every regional store and does not set out a Canadian return route; it says only that international customers pay return shipping and duties, so check the cost before buying a gift that may go back. The lifetime coverage is for defects and failures, starts with registering the tote in an account, and may be met with open-box or refurbished stock. It is a bag to keep, not one to swap on a whim.

Sea to Summit's refund policy gives 60 days from purchase for unused items in original packaging, with a $5 return label fee deducted, and only for bags bought directly from seatosummit.com; a bag from another retailer goes back to that retailer. The lifetime warranty covers defects for the original owner with proof of purchase and ends in repair, replacement or credit. A wrong litre figure costs the $5 label fee plus a fresh order, against $34.95 for the bag.

When measuring her things is the wrong move

Skip the method when the gift is meant to change the size, not match it. Someone who has said her weekend pack needs a bigger organizer has already given a number, and matching the old one would be a mistake. The phone or pack check is for a giver who has heard nothing; a stated wish overrides it.

Also pass if she carries no pack or bag to put either inside. Both are fillers for another bag, a tote that disappears into a handbag and a sack that lines a rucksack, and neither does much for someone who travels with a suitcase alone.
