Four products start a clock at checkout that has nothing to do with the price paid. Cabeau's Evolution S3 pillow, $59.99 in Canadian dollars at Amazon.ca, moves from one year of cover to a lifetime replacement each year only if it is registered within 30 days of purchase. Kryptonite's Evolution Mini-7 lock, $146.82 at Amazon.ca, comes with an optional theft payout for owners who register in the same 30 days and pay a fee. Kahtoola's MICROspikes, $99.95 at Altitude Sports, and JanSport's SuperBreak Plus, $55 at jansport.com, lean on the receipt.
Waiting for a sale is usually sound advice. The narrower question is what each clock gives a Canadian buyer, who has to start it, and whether a markdown at a Canadian retailer changes the answer. For JanSport and Kahtoola the receipt carries the cover, so a sale costs little. For Cabeau and Kryptonite, a discounted pillow or lock left in its box for five weeks is the expensive purchase.
The things in this guide
A closer look at the products, who they may suit, and what to check before buying.

Evolution S3 Neck Pillow · Steel
The $59.99 Evolution S3 (Gray, sold by Cabeau on Amazon.ca) carries one year of defect cover with a $10 handling fee plus shipping per replacement; registering with Cabeau Club within 30 days of purchase replaces that with one free replacement per year.
Before you buy: Amazon.ca's 30-day return counts from receipt while the Club registration counts from the purchase date, Cabeau's free-return promise covers US customers only, and Cabeau says international shipments may carry customs charges for the customer.

MICROspikes Footwear Traction, Black
MICROspikes in Black are $99.95 at Altitude Sports and covered for four years against defects when bought new on or after August 1, 2025 from Kahtoola or an authorized reseller, so a sale price at a dealer keeps the same term.
Before you buy: Cover stops at the original owner, Kahtoola's warranty page names no resellers, claims get no prepaid label, and Altitude returns need to happen in 30 days with an $11.99 plus tax fee unless you are a member.

Evolution Mini-7 U-Lock with 4 ft Flex Cable
Amazon.ca sells the Evolution Mini-7 with 4-foot flex cable (style 002079) at $146.82, sold and shipped by Amazon.ca; Kryptonite's theft offer lists Canada, needs registration within 30 days of purchase with the receipt, and costs $34.99 for one year or $54.99 for two as printed, with no country given for the dollar sign.
Before you buy: The payout is the lesser of the bike's base cost and an insurance deductible, up to a cap, the cable is excluded, and Kryptonite's page puts no currency on the cap or the fee.

SuperBreak Plus Backpack, 26 L, Black
The Black SuperBreak Plus is $55 at JanSport's Canadian store and covered for the lifetime of the pack against manufacturing defects with no registration, so a sale price carries the same promise as the one from jansport.com.
Before you buy: The warranty is for the original owner, repairs come first with a four-to-six-week turnaround, and the 30-day return needs an unused pack, allows no exchange and does not refund the original shipping.

The return clock belongs to whoever sold the item. Amazon.ca gives 30 days from receipt on both the Cabeau pillow and the Kryptonite lock, JanSport gives 30 days from purchase, and Altitude Sports gives 30 days with a fee. The registration clock belongs to the maker: Cabeau Club and Kryptonite's theft offer both want the product registered within 30 days of purchase. The term clock also belongs to the maker, but the purchase date merely sets it: Kahtoola's four years run from the sale, and JanSport's lifetime promise needs no step at all.
One detail splits the first two. A return window that starts at receipt and a registration window that starts at purchase move apart when a parcel is slow, because every day in transit is a day off the registration clock and none off the Amazon.ca return window. A markdown does not touch any of the three; the calendar does, and only the registration clock punishes a late start.
Cabeau and Kryptonite: thirty days that outweigh the markdown
Cabeau's Evolution S3 is $59.99 in Gray at Amazon.ca, shipped by Amazon and sold by Cabeau. The base cover is one year against defects, with a $10 handling fee plus shipping on each replacement and, for international shipments, any customs charges on the customer. Cabeau Club trades that for a replacement of one product per year, but only for products registered within 30 days of purchase. A claim asks for the store or website, the purchase date, an order number for website purchases and a photo of the care label, so the claim process allows for a pillow bought from a store.
Kryptonite's clock costs money. Amazon.ca sells the Evolution Mini-7 with its 4-foot flex cable, style 002079, at $146.82, sold and shipped by Amazon.ca. Kryptonite's theft offer lists Canada among eligible countries and asks for registration at kryptonitelock.com within 30 days of purchase, with the itemized receipt, the key number and the bike's details. The page prints the fee as $34.99 for one year or $54.99 for two, and $2,500 for a 7/10 lock, on a shared page that also has euro and pound columns and never says which dollars those are; a Canadian buyer should confirm before relying on either.
Whatever the currency, the fee is an extra cost on top of the lock. The payout is also narrower than the headline: Kryptonite pays the lesser of the bike's base cost excluding tax and accessories and any insurance deductible, up to the cap, and never for the cable in the package. The lifetime warranty on the lock is a separate promise for the original user with proof of purchase, excluding corrosion and water damage.
Kahtoola and JanSport: the receipt does the work
Altitude Sports lists Kahtoola's MICROspikes in Black at $99.95, in sizes XS to XXL. Kahtoola covers stretch-on traction for four years when bought on or after August 1, 2025, for the original owner, from Kahtoola or an authorized reseller; it asks for no registration and supplies no prepaid label for claims. Its warranty page names no resellers, so a buyer who wants certainty can ask Kahtoola whether a given shop is on its list before paying. The return path then belongs to the shop: Kahtoola says new products bought from a retail partner go back to the original store.
Altitude takes unused items back within 30 days, offers no exchanges and deducts an $11.99 return fee plus tax unless the customer is a member. That fee is the real price of changing your mind on a $99.95 pair.
JanSport's Canadian store sells the Black SuperBreak Plus at $55 and promises a lifetime of cover against manufacturing defects for the original owner, with no registration. A claim form asks for the order confirmation number (it accepts the word unknown), photos of the damage and the tag with the style number, and JanSport repairs or replaces at its discretion in four to six weeks. Returns run 30 days from purchase with a prepaid Purolator or TForce label, no exchanges, and the original shipping charge is not refunded.
What the maker's own store adds in Canada
Canadian buyers meet the direct question in a different shape. Cabeau's own returns page promises free returns to customers in the US and tells everyone else to cover local taxes, duties and shipping, while its shipping page warns that non-US shipments come from warehouses that may not stock the full range. Kahtoola refunds only direct purchases, and its returns go to an address in Arizona. Kryptonite's own page prints no price. For the other three, the Canadian buy box sits with Amazon.ca or Altitude Sports, so their terms are the ones that apply.
JanSport is the exception: its Canadian store prices in Canadian dollars and ships a prepaid return label, which no other seller here offers. A buyer who mostly wants the option to send an item back unused gets the most from JanSport's own store and the least from Altitude's fee. A buyer chasing a long cover should ignore the channel and watch two dates: when it was bought, and whether the registration is done within 30 days.
When the clock should not decide
Skip the registration for the lock if the bike is cheap or already insured with a small deductible. The payout is the lesser of the bike's base cost and the deductible, up to the cap, and the claim needs a police report within 72 hours and notice to Kryptonite within seven days. A rider whose bike costs less than a couple of years of fees, or whose deductible is small, is paying for protection that cannot pay out much.
The Cabeau Club benefit suits someone who flies often enough to wear out a pillow; Cabeau's page adds that international shipments may carry customs charges for the customer. For two flights a year, the one-year term is plenty.
Where the cover is long and registration-free, as with Kahtoola and JanSport, the price is the only live question and a Canadian sale is welcome. Put the Cabeau and Kryptonite registrations on the calendar the day the order is placed, and count from the order date, not delivery.
