Bodum Chambord Cafetière Review: The Four-Minute Method in a Chrome Frame

No paper, no pouring, no settings: coarse grounds and a timer do the work. The 1.0 litre Chambord costs £49.90 from Bodum and accepts sediment in the cup.

THE SHORT VERSION

The Chambord is the press pot most people picture when they picture a cafetière: a glass cylinder in a chrome frame with a black handle. Bodum UK lists it as item 1928-16, "8 cup, 1.0 l, 34 oz", in stock at £49.90 including VAT.

A press pot is less a machine than a procedure: coarse grind, hot water, four minutes, one slow push. Whether that procedure fits your mornings decides the purchase, and what the parts cost decides what happens when something wears out.

Our verdict

At £49.90 from Bodum UK, the Chambord 1.0 litre suits a two-to-three-mug household that prefers body and skips paper filters; pass on it for one mug a day, or if sediment has ruined press coffee for you.

A good fit for
A household that brews two or more mugs at once, buys coarse-ground coffee or owns a grinder, and treats brewing as a four-minute timer rather than a technique.
We would skip it if
One small mug a day fits a smaller size better; so does anyone who cannot share a kitchen with fine grit at the bottom of the cup, or who needs the brew to finish unattended.

Reasons to consider it

  • No paper filters or capsules: a stainless steel plunger holds back the grounds when you pour, and the method is a timer and one slow press
  • Heat-resistant borosilicate glass carafe, with a chromed stainless steel frame and lid and a stainless steel plunger
  • Wear parts are sold singly by Bodum: filter plate £6.90, spare glass £18.90

The compromises

  • Bodum calls for coarsely ground coffee; a finer grind is more likely to end up in the cup
  • Four minutes of brewing, then a slowly lowered plunger: someone has to be in the kitchen when the timer ends
  • Bodum charges £11.50 delivery on a single £49.90 order

What we have not verified: Bodum gives no lifespan for the chrome plating or the filter, only a claim of a surface "capable of withstanding many years of use", and the product page lists no manufacturer guarantee; the terms point to the Consumer Rights Act 2015 instead. Cheap spare parts limit the damage of a worn filter or a cracked carafe, but they are not durability data.

Four minutes, coarse grounds, one press

Bodum's own instructions are short: a rounded teaspoon of coarsely ground coffee per cup, water at about 92 to 96 degrees C up to 2.5 cm below the rim, a stir with a plastic or wooden spoon, the lid on, four minutes, then the plunger lowered slowly. After the purchase the method costs nothing: no filters, no settings. It does cost attention, because a pot left standing on its grounds tends to turn more bitter the longer it sits.

If the morning already includes standing at a counter waiting for toast or eggs, the timer asks nothing new. If the coffee has to be in a travel mug the moment the kettle boils, a filter machine is the better purchase.

Eight cups measured in 4 oz measures, not mugs

Bodum sells the 1928-16 as "8 cup", 1.0 litre, and counts in European cups of about 4 oz, roughly 12 cl. Eight of them come to about 96 cl, a little over three 300 ml mugs (our sum). A one-mug household should look at a smaller size; the filter plate, cross plate and spiral plate are shared by the 4, 6 and 8 cup versions.

The £49.90 is not always the price you pay. Bodum shows £11.50 standard delivery on the product page and in its terms, and a single £49.90 pot pays it. Delivery is to the UK mainland only; you have 14 days to change your mind, but return postage is yours and Bodum accepts only unused items. The coffee is separate too: coarse-ground beans from a roaster, or a grinder at home, neither of which is in the price.

Glass carafe, chrome frame, steel plunger

The carafe is heat-resistant borosilicate glass, the frame and lid are stainless steel that Bodum says has been through several chrome-plating processes, the plunger is stainless steel and the handle is matte polypropylene. The specification reads "Shatter Proof: No", so this is ordinary glass in a frame, and a knock on the counter edge is the carafe's risk.

Bodum sells the parts that wear: filter plate £6.90, cross plate £6.90, spiral plate £8.90, which together come to £22.70, and a spare glass at £18.90, a little under 38 percent of the price of the whole pot. On cover, the page lists no manufacturer guarantee; the terms summarise your Consumer Rights Act 2015 rights instead. Sediment in the cup comes with the method rather than the build: without paper, fine particles stay in suspension. Anyone who dislikes that will be happier with a paper-filter dripper.

When to press instead of pour

The press gives body in the cup and no filters to buy; a pour-over dripper gives a cleaner cup and more control over the result. Amazon.co.uk sells the white plastic Hario V60 size 02 at £7.95 against a £9.00 RRP, roughly a sixth of the Chambord's price, with delivery costs left out on both sides. Its filter papers are the running cost: £4.99 for 100 in the offer on the same page. The effort differs as well: the press asks for one plunge, the dripper for attention through the whole pour.

The V60 is cheaper to start, but each pack of 100 papers adds £4.99. The Chambord has nothing to restock, only the spare parts listed above.
