The Exchange Clock Starts at Checkout, Not When the Gift Is Opened

Two gifts under £50 with a colour to get wrong. Both makers give 30 days from purchase and neither page describes an exchange: a wrong colour means a return and a second order, with return costs left unpriced.

THE SHORT VERSION

A gift that comes in colours carries a risk the giver takes on alone, because the order sits under the giver's name and email and the recipient cannot walk it back to the maker. This guide reads two items under £50 through one question: what does a wrong colour cost the buyer, in pounds and in days?

The two are a £34.99 strapped neck pillow in three colours and a £26.99 packable tote in five, £61.98 together. Each maker gives 30 days to return, counted from the purchase date. Neither UK page describes a swap, so the colour is effectively chosen once, at checkout.

The things in this guide

A closer look at the products, who they may suit, and what to check before buying.

Cabeau Evolution S3 Neck Pillow · Steel
Three colours, a plain refund route: Cabeau Evolution S3

Evolution S3 Neck Pillow · Steel

Cabeau's UK site sells it at £34.99 in Steel, Indigo and Jet Black, and accepts unused product for a full refund within 30 days of purchase.

Before you buy: The return page makes international customers responsible for local taxes, duties and shipping fees without pricing them, and describes a refund, not an exchange. The lifetime replacement benefit must be registered within 30 days of purchase.

Peak Design Packable Tote, 12 L, Charcoal
Five colours, one of them sold out: Peak Design Packable Tote

Packable Tote, 12 L, Charcoal

A 12 L zip-top tote at £26.99 is a low-stakes colour choice, and Peak Design takes returns for 30 days from purchase on everything except apparel.

Before you buy: International customers pay return shipping and duties, and the FAQ names no UK carrier or fee. Ocean showed as sold out when read, and a warranty claim starts from an account registration.

Both terms count from purchase, and a December gift is often bought in November

Cabeau gives 30 days from purchase and Peak Design gives 30 days from purchase. Neither page describes a holiday extension or starts counting when the box is opened, so the date on the order receipt is the only date either portal can use.

Run the sum against a calendar. A pillow or tote ordered on 20 November for 25 December has used 35 days by the time it is unwrapped, so both terms have already lapsed. Buying early is sensible for stock and delivery and wrong for anything the recipient might want to swap. Order the colour-dependent gift last, or order it early and settle the colour before the giving.

What a wrong colour costs, product by product

Cabeau's UK return page promises a full refund on unused product within 30 days and describes no swap, so a wrong Steel is a return plus a new £34.99 order in Indigo or Jet Black. The page also makes international customers responsible for local taxes, duties and shipping fees, without saying which apply to a return or giving a figure. The pillow must be unused, which rules out trying it on a flight first.

Peak Design's FAQ is just as short: 30 days, apparel excluded, and international customers pay return shipping and duties. It names no UK carrier or fee, and it does not say a different colour can be swapped in. On a £26.99 tote, a return shipment plus a reorder could take a large share of what the gift cost. That unknown is the one figure here that neither maker's page supports.

The warranties are written for whoever registers

Cabeau's lifetime replacement works only if the pillow is registered with Cabeau Club within 30 days of purchase, which is the same 30 days as the return window. A gift handed over in week five has already lost the benefit unless the giver registered it first.

Peak Design's warranty claim begins in a Peak Design account, where the product is registered before a claim is submitted. Neither page says how a gift moves from the buyer's name to the recipient's. Pass on the order receipt with the gift, and register the item on the recipient's behalf where a form allows it.

When to skip the colour-dependent gift

Skip the pillow when the seats the recipient sleeps in have no reachable headrest, since the straps need something to wrap around, and skip it when you are guessing between Steel, Indigo and Jet Black for someone who cares which. Skip the tote if a folding carrier bag from a supermarket would do the same job, or if Ocean is the colour you wanted, since it was sold out when read.

If the gift will be bought more than a month before the occasion and the recipient might want a different colour, neither maker's UK terms leave the giver whole: both describe a return, not a swap, and Peak Design says outright that international customers pay return shipping. Every term above comes from the maker pages cited, read on the date shown.
