These two organisers often appear in the same kind of tidy workspace photo, but they solve opposite problems. A pegboard asks the work to come to a stable station. A basket lets a collection follow the work. That distinction matters more than deciding which one makes a desk look more organised.
Watch the end of a normal session and the answer appears. Scissors and tools going back to the same desk, to be used there again tomorrow, point to the board. A dining table that has to be cleared before dinner points to the basket. Storage lasts when it supports a transition you already make rather than adding one you have to remember.
Our verdict
Choose a pegboard for frequently retrieved tools at a stable station; choose a basket when the whole kit travels together.
- A good fit for
- Someone deciding whether to organise one workspace or carry one activity between rooms.
- We would skip it if
- The real problem is excess inventory, confidential papers, or items needing enclosed protection.
Reasons to consider it
- A fixed board can give individual tools visible homes
- A handled basket can keep a complete routine together
The compromises
- Pegboard accessories and wall fixings add cost and commitment
- A basket can turn into a pile if unrelated items accumulate
What we have not verified: Retrieval time, fixing strength, carrying comfort and long-term durability were not compared.

The 76 by 56 cm SKADIS board is designed to take separate accessories. RISATORP is an open mesh basket, 25 by 26 by 18 cm, with a wooden handle. These physical formats suggest different habits: return an item to a designated position on the board, or return the whole collection to the basket after a session.
A craft station in use all day rewards giving each tool a visible home. Paperwork that colonises the kitchen table twice a week rewards putting the whole set in one basket. Mounting a board for items that live in another room, or packing a basket for work that never leaves the desk, both create a chore where there was none.
Compare the finished system cost
The listed board price was £15, while the dark grey RISATORP was £7. The board price does not cover every hook, shelf, or container you might need: a 3-pack of lidded containers is £9, a single container £3, a shelf £4. Screws for wall mounting are sold separately, and a white connector 2-pack is another £5.
Lay out the actual tools before choosing accessories. Count the pieces that need a hook, a container, or a different home altogether. This prevents a low board price from disguising a much larger system purchase. For a basket, check whether the contents need small inner containers. It may still be the simpler arrangement, but buying partitions for every item can undo its appeal as a quick place to put a kit.
Decide whether visibility helps or distracts
Open storage turns the collection into part of the room, for better or worse. Hang the items whose visible position genuinely speeds retrieval, and leave the remaining holes empty; an unfinished-looking board is not a problem, a wall of seldom-used tools is. A basket groups the same items without putting each one on display, though anyone walking past still sees the contents.
Neither format is a good fit for paperwork that should stay private or materials that need protection from spills. A closed drawer may do more useful work than either purchase. RISATORP also has specific care limits: IKEA says to keep it out of the dishwasher, away from running water and never immersed, and to wipe it clean and dry. Its listed maximum load is 4 kg, so a basket of heavy tools suits it less well than one of stationery or craft supplies.
Try the routine before investing in the display
Use an existing box to simulate a moving kit for several sessions. If you repeatedly carry it, use nearly everything inside, and put it away intact, a handled basket has a credible job. If you keep unpacking the same objects onto the same desk, individual fixed homes may make more sense.
For the pegboard, sketch the layout and confirm a suitable mounting position before ordering, following the manufacturer guidance for that wall. Then pick the least elaborate system the household will actually reset. An organiser whose upkeep costs more attention than the original searching did has failed, however good it looks on the wall.
