Ravensburger Paris at Dawn Review: A Standard 1000-Piece Puzzle at £14.99

Ravensburger lists Paris at Dawn at £14.99 in the UK: extra-thick board, linen-structured paper, 70 by 50 cm finished. Pay for the picture, not novelty, and know that a missing piece means a refund, not a spare piece.

THE SHORT VERSION

Ravensburger's UK shop lists Paris at Dawn, article number 12000885, at £14.99. The same article number is sold in the US as Paris in the Dawn, and the box size matches, so it is the same puzzle under a slightly different name. It is a 1000-piece Eiffel Tower street scene that finishes at 70 by 50 cm.

Treat it as a representative unit of the standard Ravensburger 1000-piece line: most of what the UK page says about board, paper, delivery and returns applies to any puzzle in the range, so the conclusions carry over to a different picture. The one thing that changes the buying advice is what happens if a piece goes missing.

Our verdict

A well-priced example of the mainstream Ravensburger 1000-piece format at £14.99. Buy it from Ravensburger's own UK shop if a missing piece worries you, because that is the only route with a stated refund.

A good fit for
Someone who does a puzzle a month and wants a picture with distinct regions, and a maker shop that refunds a puzzle with missing parts within 30 days.
We would skip it if
You want an unusual cut or irregular piece shapes, or you will buy elsewhere and want the maker to supply a lost piece, which it does not do under 7,000 pieces.

Reasons to consider it

  • Extra-thick cardboard with a linen-structured, glare-free paper, per Ravensburger's UK description
  • The box art splits into obvious zones of sky, shopfront and street, which speeds the first sort
  • Ravensburger's own shop gives free returns for 30 days and lists missing components among refundable reasons

The compromises

  • The UK pages describe no distinctive piece shapes, so the appeal is the picture and the fit rather than the cut
  • Finished at 70 by 50 cm, it needs a table that stays clear for the duration, or a mat
  • Ravensburger does not supply single replacement pieces for puzzles under 7,000 pieces, and its shop delivers to mainland Great Britain only

What we have not verified: The puzzle was not assembled here; piece fit, dust in the box and how faithfully the print matches the box art are unchecked. The UK page names no artist and gives no board thickness in millimetres, and a replacement-box promise like the American one was not found on the UK site.

A scene built for sorting

The reason a 1000-piece puzzle is pleasant or miserable is usually the picture, not the board. The box art shows a Paris bakery street at sunrise with the Eiffel Tower above the rooftops, which gives a sky area, a shopfront and a street surface to sort into before any edge piece is placed. Ravensburger's UK description says only that the Eiffel Tower is bathed in gentle morning light, and calls the puzzle engaging for seasoned puzzlers and newcomers alike.

Expect moderate difficulty: the sky is the likeliest slow patch, with any dense foliage or lit windows close behind. The UK page carries a 14+ badge while its description text says children 12 and up, so treat the age guidance as unsettled. The page does not name the artist, so there is no credit to quote.

Extra-thick board and the linen finish

The UK description is the copy Ravensburger uses across its 1000-piece line: an exclusive extra-thick cardboard with a fine, linen-structured paper that gives a glare-free image. The glare point matters most. A textured, matte surface keeps overhead lights from washing out the sky pieces, which is where glossy puzzles become tiresome. The page also states that the puzzle complies with UK and EU testing standards.

It gives no board thickness in millimetres and no piece-shape description, so those stay open. The finished puzzle measures 70 by 50 cm and the box is 33.5 by 25.5 by 5.5 cm. The page does not describe the piece shapes, so there is no basis here for calling the cut unusual.

Missing a piece: what the UK shop offers

A missing piece is the one thing that ruins a jigsaw, and the UK terms are narrower than the American ones. Ravensburger says it cannot provide individual replacement pieces for puzzles under 7,000 pieces, because pieces are cut with tools that are regularly updated and pieces from other batches would not match. The UK pages describe no 365-day replacement-box promise.

What they do offer is a return route. Items from Ravensburger's official online shops can go back free within 30 days of receipt using a free postage label, and missing components are on the list of refundable reasons. For a faulty item, the right to a refund is not limited to 30 days if you use the free return service. Refunds go to the original payment method and normally take 10 working days. Returns are accepted only for items from the official shops; from another retailer, contact that retailer.

What £14.99 buys, and how it arrives

At £14.99, Paris at Dawn sits at the usual 1000-piece price on the shop: Down the Lane, Holiday Cottage, Terracotta Mansion, Village Life and Burano show the same figure, while some licensed designs, such as Challenge - Pokemon and Winnie the Pooh, Collectors Edition, list at £15.99.

Delivery is free over £50 and otherwise £3.95, so a single £14.99 puzzle carries postage unless it joins a larger basket. The shop delivers to mainland Great Britain only, not the Channel Islands or Northern Ireland, in 3 to 5 business days by Royal Mail or DPD. The product page pairs the puzzle with a Roll your Puzzle mat at £16.99, Sort & Go! sorting trays at £21.99 and a Handy Puzzle Storage Board at £11.99; none is required.

When to skip it

Pass on this puzzle if what you enjoy is the cut. Nothing on the UK pages describes whimsy or irregular pieces, so the appeal is the picture and the fit. A puzzler who has moved on to irregular or wooden cuts is unlikely to find novelty here.

Think twice about where you buy it. The refund route above applies to Ravensburger's own shop, and Ravensburger will not post a single lost piece for a puzzle of this size. If you prefer another retailer, check its returns terms first; and in Northern Ireland or the Channel Islands the maker shop will not deliver at all.
