Buying guide

The Thirty-Day Clock Matters More Than the Discount

Cabeau's lifetime replacement and Kryptonite's theft offer both need registering within 30 days of purchase, and a sale price does not pause that. JanSport and Kahtoola follow the receipt instead.

THE SHORT VERSION

Four products start a clock at checkout that has nothing to do with the price paid. Cabeau's Evolution S3 pillow, £34.99 in Steel at cabeau.co.uk, gets a lifetime replacement of one product a year only if it is registered within 30 days of purchase. Kryptonite's Evolution Mini-7 lock, £46.99 at Amazon.co.uk, comes with an optional theft payout of up to £1,500 for owners who register in the same 30 days and pay a fee. Kahtoola's MICROspikes, £70.00 at Tiso, and JanSport's SuperBreak Plus, £38.00 from JanSport's UK store, lean on the receipt.

Waiting for a sale is usually sound advice. The narrower question is what each clock gives a UK buyer, who has to start it, and whether a markdown changes the answer. For JanSport and Kahtoola the receipt carries the cover, so a sale costs little, with one wrinkle: Tiso gives sale items 14 days to return rather than 30. For Cabeau and Kryptonite, a discounted pillow or lock left in its box for five weeks is the expensive purchase.

The things in this guide

A closer look at the products, who they may suit, and what to check before buying.

Cabeau Evolution S3 Neck Pillow · Steel
Register inside the first 30 days or keep the one-year term

Evolution S3 Neck Pillow · Steel

The £34.99 Evolution S3 (Steel, from cabeau.co.uk) carries one year of defect cover with a US$10 handling fee plus shipping per replacement; registering with Cabeau Club within 30 days of purchase replaces that with a replacement of one product a year.

Before you buy: Cabeau's 30-day return counts from purchase, not delivery, goes to a California address and leaves taxes, duties and shipping with the customer; its warranty page prices fees in dollars.

Kahtoola MICROspikes Footwear Traction, Black
The receipt sets four years; the shop sets the way back

MICROspikes Footwear Traction, Black

MICROspikes in Black are £70.00 at Tiso and covered for four years against defects when bought new on or after 1 August 2025 from Kahtoola or an authorised reseller, so a sale price at a dealer keeps the same term.

Before you buy: Cover stops at the original owner, Kahtoola's warranty page names no resellers, claims get no prepaid label, and Tiso returns run 30 days from delivery but only 14 for sale items.

Kryptonite Evolution Mini-7 U-Lock with 4 ft Flex Cable
A £46.99 lock, plus a paid registration inside 30 days

Evolution Mini-7 U-Lock with 4 ft Flex Cable

Amazon.co.uk sells the Evolution Mini-7 with 4 ft flex cable (model 002079) at £46.99, shipped and sold by Amazon; Kryptonite's theft offer lists the United Kingdom, needs registration within 30 days of purchase and pays up to £1,500 on a 7/10 lock.

Before you buy: The payout is the lesser of the bike's base cost and an insurance deductible, up to a cap, the cable is excluded, and the fee table prints dollars only: US$34.99 for one year, US$54.99 for two.

JanSport SuperBreak Plus Backpack, 26 L, Black
A 30-year promise with no registration and free returns

SuperBreak Plus Backpack, 26 L, Black

The Black SuperBreak Plus is £38.00 at JanSport's UK store and carries a 30-year warranty on regular products with no registration, so a sale price carries the same promise as the one from JanSport's own site.

Before you buy: Limited-edition fabrics get two years (the hangtag says which), repair or replacement is at JanSport's discretion, and standard delivery is £5 below £45 although returns are free.

Three clocks, and only one of them is the shop's

The return clock belongs to whoever sold the item, and each starts it differently. Amazon.co.uk gives 30 days from receipt on the Kryptonite lock, JanSport and Tiso count 30 days from delivery, and Cabeau counts 30 days from purchase. The registration clock belongs to the maker: Cabeau Club and Kryptonite's theft offer both want the product registered within 30 days of purchase. The term clock is also the maker's, but the purchase date merely sets it: Kahtoola's four years run from the sale, and JanSport's 30-year promise needs no step at all.

That mismatch bites on a slow parcel. A return window that starts at delivery and a registration window that starts at purchase drift apart, because every day in transit comes off the registration clock and none off the return window at Amazon, JanSport or Tiso. A markdown touches none of the three, except that Tiso gives sale items 14 days instead of 30; only the registration clock punishes a late start.

Cabeau and Kryptonite: thirty days that outweigh the markdown

Cabeau's Evolution S3 is £34.99 in Steel at cabeau.co.uk, with Indigo and Jet Black at the same price. The base cover is one year against defects, with a US$10 handling fee plus shipping on each replacement and any customs charges on the customer. Cabeau Club trades that for a replacement of one product per year, but only for products registered within 30 days of purchase. A claim asks for the store or website, the purchase date and a photo of the care label, so the process allows for a pillow bought somewhere else.

Kryptonite's clock costs money. Amazon.co.uk sells the Evolution Mini-7 with its 4 ft flex cable, model 002079, at £46.99, shipped and sold by Amazon. Kryptonite's theft offer lists the United Kingdom among eligible countries and asks for registration at kryptonitelock.com within 30 days of purchase, with the itemised receipt, the key number and the bike's details. A 7/10 lock is covered up to £1,500; the fee table prints only US$34.99 for one year or US$54.99 for two, with no sterling figure, so a UK buyer should confirm the price at registration.

Whatever the currency, the fee sits on top of the £46.99 lock. The payout is also narrower than the headline: Kryptonite pays the lesser of the bike's base cost excluding tax and accessories and any insurance deductible, up to the cap, and never for the cable in the package. A claim needs a police report within 72 hours and notice to Kryptonite within seven days. The lifetime warranty on the lock is a separate promise for the original user with proof of purchase, excluding corrosion and water damage.

Kahtoola and JanSport: the receipt does the work

Tiso lists Kahtoola's MICROspikes in Black at £70.00, with sizes S to XL in stock, narrower than the XS to XXL on Kahtoola's own page. Kahtoola covers stretch-on traction for four years when bought on or after 1 August 2025, for the original owner, from Kahtoola or an authorised reseller; it asks for no registration and supplies no prepaid label for claims. Its warranty page names no resellers, so a buyer who wants certainty can ask Kahtoola whether Tiso is on its list before paying. The return path then belongs to the shop: Kahtoola says products bought from a retail partner go back to the original store.

Tiso takes goods back within 30 days of delivery, or 14 days for sale items, if the labels are attached and the product is unused. Change-of-mind returns go through its portal with postage from £4.50, or back to a Tiso or Alpine Bikes store. A markdown can therefore cost a £70.00 pair half of its way back.

JanSport's UK store sells the Black SuperBreak Plus at £38.00 (26 L, 42 x 32 x 14 cm) and promises 30 years of cover against defects in materials and workmanship, with no registration; limited-edition fabrics get two years, and the hangtag says which. Cover goes to the buyer or someone given the pack as a gift, and JanSport repairs or replaces at its discretion. Returns run 30 days from delivery as a right of withdrawal, free by label or drop-off point, with express delivery costs the one deduction.

What the maker's own site adds in the UK

Cabeau's own returns page promises free returns to US customers and tells everyone else to cover local taxes, duties and shipping, with the parcel going to California, while its shipping page warns that non-US shipments may come from warehouses that do not stock the whole range. Kahtoola's product page speaks only of US shipping, so a UK buyer goes through a shop such as Tiso, and Kryptonite's own product page prints no price, so Amazon.co.uk's terms are the ones that apply to the lock.

JanSport is the maker that prices in sterling. Standard delivery is £5 and free over £45, so a £38.00 pack pays £5 unless it goes to a collection point, which is free with free returns. A buyer who mostly wants the option to send an item back unused gets the cleanest terms from JanSport's own store; a buyer chasing a long cover should ignore the channel and watch two dates: when it was bought, and whether registration is done within 30 days.

When the clock should not decide

Skip the registration for the lock if the bike is cheap or already insured with a small deductible. The payout is the lesser of the bike's base cost and the deductible, up to the cap, and the claim needs a police report within 72 hours and notice to Kryptonite within seven days. A rider whose bike costs little, or whose deductible is small, is paying for protection that cannot pay out much.

The Cabeau Club benefit suits someone who flies often enough to wear out a pillow; Cabeau's pages add that international shipments may carry customs charges for the customer. For two flights a year, the one-year term is plenty.

Where the cover is long and registration-free, as with Kahtoola and JanSport, the price is the only live question and a UK sale is welcome. Put the Cabeau and Kryptonite registrations on the calendar the day the order is placed, and count from the day you paid, not the day it arrives.
