Upgrade Gifts: Pay Only For The Lines That Actually Changed

Two products here are the higher tier of something a grown-up may already own. Each maker prints what the step up adds, what it costs and what it takes out of the box. Read all three columns before wrapping one.

THE SHORT VERSION

Adults who like a thing tend to keep the first version of it long after the maker has released a better one. That makes the upgrade tier a tempting gift: the recipient has proven they use the category, so the risk of a shelf ornament is low. The trap is that a higher price rarely buys a longer list of everything. It buys a short list of specific changes, and sometimes it removes something the cheaper model had.

This guide reads two step-up models through one method: a sleep mask and a wireless mouse. For each, the maker's own pages fill three columns: what the upgrade adds, what the gap costs, and what stays the same or leaves the box. The gift is right only when the recipient's known friction sits in the first column. When it sits in the third, the cheaper model they already own is the correct one.

The things in this guide

A closer look at the products, who they may suit, and what to check before buying.

Manta PRO Sleep Mask
For the side sleeper who owns the US$39 mask

PRO Sleep Mask

Manta's own comparison lists five changes over the ORIGINAL: cooling fabrics, ventilation, an above-ear strap, C-shaped cups and an anti-slip gel strip. The US$46 step up is aimed at what happens when a head meets a pillow sideways; the PRO lists at US$85, with no pound price.

Before you buy: Both masks make the same 100% blackout claim, so a back sleeper gains fabric and little else. Replacement PRO cups are US$49, and a UK order is an international shipment from the United States.

Logitech MX Master 3S Bluetooth Edition Wireless Mouse
For the laptop worker still using an M720

MX Master 3S Bluetooth Edition Wireless Mouse

Against the £54.99 M720 Triathlon, the £89.99 MX Master 3S adds an 8,000 DPI sensor that tracks on glass, an electromagnetic MagSpeed wheel, a thumb wheel, a rechargeable cell rated at up to 70 days and Quiet Clicks, which Logitech says make 90% less noise than the MX Master 3.

Before you buy: The Bluetooth Edition box holds the mouse and documentation: no receiver, no battery to swap. A recipient on a desktop with no Bluetooth radio and no Logi Bolt receiver cannot pair it.

Three columns, all filled from the makers' pages

Both makers publish what they need for the comparison. Manta prints a table with Yes and No cells against the ORIGINAL. Logitech's M720 page and MX Master 3S page can be set against one another line by line. From those, three columns fall out: additions, price gap, and what is shared or removed.

The gaps are smaller than the sticker prices suggest. Manta asks US$46 more for the PRO, in dollars and with no pound price; Logitech asks £35 more for the 3S at list. What differs is the third column. The mouse upgrade removes the receiver and the battery that the M720 box held. The mask upgrade removes nothing, but it also leaves the core claim, blackout, exactly where it was.

Mask and mouse: five additions each, and one catch each

Manta's table gives the PRO five Yes cells the ORIGINAL lacks: cooling fabrics, advanced ventilation, a head strap that sits above the ears, C-shaped eye cups in place of O-shaped ones, and an anti-slip gel strip. All five describe a head lying on its side. Both pages make a blackout claim, so a recipient who sleeps on their back and has never complained about the ORIGINAL gets US$46 of fabric science they will not feel. The catch is cost beyond the sticker: replacement PRO cups are US$49, more than the whole entry mask, and from the UK the mask ships internationally, from US$10 and 7 to 21 business days after dispatch.

Logitech's two pages line up the same way. The £54.99 M720 already pairs with three devices, so switching between computers is not what the 3S adds. The additions are an 8,000 DPI sensor that tracks on glass 4 mm or thicker, the MagSpeed wheel, a thumb wheel, a 500 mAh rechargeable cell rated at up to 70 days, and clicks Logitech puts at 90% quieter than the MX Master 3. The removed column is concrete: the M720 box holds a Unifying receiver and an AA battery, while the 3S Bluetooth Edition box holds the mouse and documentation. A recipient on a tower with no Bluetooth radio needs a Bluetooth adapter or a Logi Bolt receiver they already own; the M720's Unifying receiver does not carry over.

One question per product, and the terms that back it up

Each upgrade can be checked with a single question the recipient will answer without guessing the gift. Which side do you sleep on decides the Manta. Does your work computer have Bluetooth decides the Logitech. A wrong answer does not make the product bad; it makes the entry model the recipient already uses the better fit, and the money belongs elsewhere.

The terms differ in ways that shape the order of risk. Logitech lists free returns within 30 days of purchase and a 2-year limited hardware warranty, all on its UK store. Manta offers a 60-day money-back guarantee with a prepaid label, but the six-month warranty is governed by United States law and runs from the date of purchase, while delivery alone can take 7 to 21 business days after dispatch. Order the mask early, and expect a refund to be a process rather than a shop counter.

Skip the upgrade when the complaint is not about the changed line

Do not buy either of these for a recipient who is content with the version they have. An upgrade gift works because it answers a friction the recipient has already noticed, and a person who has never mentioned the strap or the scroll wheel is not carrying that friction. Buying up a tier for its own sake also carries a quiet insult: it tells the recipient the thing they chose was the lesser one.

Skip specific products for specific people. The Manta PRO for a back sleeper, and the MX Master 3S for anyone whose only computer lacks a Bluetooth radio, are both cases where the entry model the recipient already owns is the better fit.
