Two Gifts Under £50, and What Each One Still Needs

A £7.95 dripper and a £35 tumbler. The price is the easy part; the filters, the hand washing and the recipient's existing habits are not.

THE SHORT VERSION

Two checked UK prices: £7.95 for a Hario V60 size 02 dripper and £35 for KINTO's 500ml Travel Tumbler. Both come in well under fifty pounds. Only one of them works straight out of the wrapping.

A gift like this fails at the same two places every time: a missing consumable, or a care instruction the recipient will not follow.

The things in this guide

A closer look at the products, who they may suit, and what to check before buying.

Kinto Travel Tumbler · 500ml
The commuter who fills a cup first

Travel Tumbler · 500ml

A defined 500ml capacity, 74mm across and 197mm tall, for a person who already fills a cup before going out.

Before you buy: KINTO says no dishwasher, seat the silicone rings correctly, and carry it upright. A dishwasher household will resent it.

Hario V60 Coffee Dripper · 02
The friend who asked about pour-over

V60 Coffee Dripper · 02

The cheapest honest entry to the method at £7.95, and small enough to sit on a crowded counter.

Before you buy: Size-02 paper filters are a separate purchase and are specific to the size. Give the filters with it or the gift waits.

Buy for the routine you have watched, not the interest they mentioned

KINTO's tumbler is 74mm across, 197mm tall and about 310g empty, which only matters if the person already carries a drink out of the door. Someone who fills a cup at home and takes it to the bus gets a daily use; someone who buys a coffee on the way gets a cupboard item.

Enthusiasm is a weaker signal than habit. A person who likes coffee and owns a brewer they enjoy rarely wants a second method. They may well want the filters, the mug or the scale that supports the first one. The V60 suits the friend who has asked how pour-over works, not the one who already has a routine.

Count everything that has to arrive with it

The V60 is the clearest case. A £7.95 dripper needs size-02 paper filters, ground coffee, hot water and a vessel that will take the brewed cup. Amazon.co.uk lists a 100-pack of Hario size-02 papers at £4.99, so dripper and papers together come to £12.94 on that retailer's pages (our sum). Filters are sized to the cone, so a pack bought by brand name alone can be the wrong one.

The tumbler carries a different kind of homework. KINTO gives an empty weight of about 310g, publishes six-hour hot and cold retention claims, and says not to use a dishwasher, microwave or oven, to attach the silicone rings correctly and to keep it upright. Pass the care notes on with the gift, not in the box. The Amazon.co.uk listing for the dripper says dishwasher safe, so the two gifts ask for very different washing-up.

What these prices do and do not cover

KINTO's UK store charges £35 with tax included, with free tracked delivery over £50 and £2.95 below that. Amazon.co.uk sells the dripper at £7.95 against a £9.00 list price. Add the £4.99 pack of filters and the three items come to £47.94; KINTO's £2.95 delivery on top makes £50.89, so each gift fits under £50 but buying both from these two shops does not.

KINTO refunds new, unused items in original packaging within 14 days of receipt, and the buyer pays the return postage. Amazon.co.uk shows the dripper as returnable within 30 days of receipt. The Standard BAGGU is left out: its own store prices it in US dollars and no UK price was found.
