IKEA SKÅDIS Review: Plan the Things You Will Hang Before Buying the Board

A pegboard can reclaim a useful work surface. It can also turn a blank wall into another place to accumulate things.

THE SHORT VERSION

Start a SKÅDIS purchase by putting the intended contents on the desk in front of you. A group of things used most days is worth moving to the wall. A group of things waiting to become useful is a sorting problem, and no board has ever solved one.

The white 76 by 56 cm board was listed at £15 on ikea.com in the UK when checked, and in stock. Cheap against a finished organiser, and misleading, because the board alone stores nothing. Price the containers, the hooks and the wall fixings before comparing anything.

Our verdict

Worth considering for a known group of frequently used tools; poor value as a decorative promise to get organised.

A good fit for
A person with limited desk space, suitable mounting options, and specific small items to keep within reach.
We would skip it if
You need concealed storage, cannot mount it appropriately, or have not priced the accessories.

Reasons to consider it

  • Moves selected items off a horizontal work surface
  • Accessories can be arranged around a changing routine

The compromises

  • The board price is only part of the complete setup
  • Open storage keeps both useful objects and clutter visible

What we have not verified: No load testing of the board, no comparison of hook retention, no assessment of what repeated mounting does to a wall.

A closer look at the products, who they may suit, and what to check before buying.

Plan first, accessorise second

Worth it once you can name the tools leaving the desk and the hand that will reach for them.

Before you buy: Wall screws and every holder are separate purchases, and the fixings must suit your wall.

Price a useful arrangement, not an empty rectangle

The product page lists the wall-mounting rail as included and the wall screws as sold separately. IKEA sells the holders as their own articles: a 7-piece accessories set at £9, a single container at £3, five white hooks for £1.

Write the short list first: scissors, tape, a charging cable, the notebook in daily use. Price only the holders that list needs. The board plus one 7-piece set comes to £24 (£15 plus £9); filling every hole is decorating, and it costs more than the board did.

Storage should shorten a movement you repeat

Visible is not the same as reachable. Note where you sit, which hand goes for the thing, and whether a monitor is in the way. A board mounted an arm-stretch too far has moved the interruption from a drawer to a wall.

Tape paper stand-ins to the wall before drilling anything. Leave room to lift each item out, not just to hang it. A sparse layout that survives a busy afternoon beats a dense one that photographs well.

Choose the installation around the room you have

IKEA lists the white panel as fibreboard with acrylic paint, cleaned with a damp cloth and wiped dry. It carries a falling-hazard warning: anchor it securely with screws and plugs suited to your home, or seek professional advice. The page also describes desk and shelf use with connectors sold separately, at £5 for a 2-pack, and those need checking against your actual furniture.

In a rental, settle what the tenancy agreement permits before ordering. Desk connectors are not universal across edge shapes and thicknesses. Do not infer a load rating from a product photograph, and read the installation sheet rather than this page.

The best board leaves some space unused

After installation, judge success by whether the desktop stays useful and tools return to their assigned places. If items migrate back to the desk, change the arrangement before buying more holders. The issue may be reach, habit, or an object that never belonged there.

Recommended for a specific workflow that gains from seeing the tools, helped by IKEA's stated 365-day return for a full refund (conditions are on the product page). Odds and ends that only add visual noise belong in a drawer. Rearranging is a feature until it becomes the hobby.
