Bellroy's Classic Backpack is the bag the company points office commuters toward: a 20-liter zip-panel pack with a cushioned slot for laptops up to 16 inches, a front admin pocket, a horizontal luggage pass-through and a contoured back panel. It sells for $145 on Bellroy's US site in Black, Camel, Olive and Steel, with an Indigo colorway cut to $99 during this check. Bellroy labels the current run the Third Edition and covers it with the six-year warranty it applies to every bag it makes.
The number that frames the purchase is 20 liters. The Herschel Classic reviewed on this site holds 26 liters for $60, so Bellroy is asking more than double for less space. What $145 buys instead is finish and layout: a soft matte recycled fabric, leather accents, metal zippers and a main compartment that unzips and folds open like a suitcase lid. Whether those trades pay off for you is what the rest of this piece works through.
Our verdict
A tidy 20 L work backpack at $145 with a full drop-down opening, a cushioned laptop slot to 16 inches and Bellroy's six-year bag warranty; pay for it if the matte fabric, leather trim and organization matter to you, because the volume is ordinary.
- A good fit for
- A commuter carrying a 14- to 16-inch laptop, a charger and a lunch who wants a bag that looks finished in an office and slides onto a suitcase handle.
- We would skip it if
- You carry gym clothes or a week of groceries on top of the laptop, want a hip belt, or need a rain rating; 20 L and a water-resistant fabric are the limits here.
Reasons to consider it
- Drop-down zip opening exposes the full main compartment, with a padded 16-inch laptop sleeve and document slip
- 700 g total in a 70% recycled-polyester build with leather accents, metal zippers and an AirTag slip pocket
- Six-year warranty on bags, longer than most daypacks near this price
The compromises
- 20 L is modest for $145; the Herschel Classic gives 26 L for $60
- Composition is 70% recycled polyester, 20% nylon, 5% leather and 5% other, so the leather is trim, not the body
- Four pockets in total, no hip belt, no sternum strap, no rain cover and no stated water rating
What we have not verified: The bag was not carried or loaded for this write-up; strap comfort under a full 16-inch laptop, how the matte fabric wears at the corners, and whether the drop-down panel stays flat when overpacked were not assessed.
The things in this guide
A closer look at the products, who they may suit, and what to check before buying.

Classic Backpack (Third Edition) · 20 L, Black
A padded 16-inch sleeve with a document slip, a drop-down opening that lays the main compartment open, a key-clip front pocket, an AirTag slip and a pass-through for a suitcase handle, all in a 700 g bag with leather trim and a six-year warranty.
Before you buy: Twenty liters fills up once a spare layer and a lunch join the laptop, and the $145 price is more than double what a plainer 26 L daypack costs.
Price checked September 11, 2026. Retailer prices can change.Twenty liters, opened from the front like a suitcase
Bellroy rates the Classic Backpack at 20 liters and measures it at 43 × 35 × 15 cm outside, which converts to roughly 16.9 × 13.8 × 5.9 inches; the internal figures are 36 × 26 × 8 cm. The shallow depth is deliberate. It is a flat-backed office bag, not a cylinder, and it is shaped to sit against the spine instead of bulging outward once the laptop goes in. Bellroy counts four pockets in total, which is a modest number for a bag sold on organization.
The main compartment opens through a drop-down zip panel, so the front of the bag folds forward and the interior is visible from above instead of through a slot. Inside sits a cushioned slot for laptops up to 16 inches with a document slip in front of it and a stretch-mesh zip pocket. Outside, a front admin pocket carries a key clip, and the internal label doubles as a slip pocket sized for an Apple AirTag, a small touch that costs Bellroy nothing and saves a tracker pouch.
Recycled polyester body, leather at the edges
The exterior is what Bellroy calls Canva Weave, a 100% recycled polyester with a soft matte finish and a contrasting lining. The composition Bellroy lists for the whole bag is 70% recycled polyester, 20% nylon, 5% leather and 5% other materials, which tells you where the leather lives: on the accents and pulls, not the panels. Metal zippers and an embroidered owl are the other heritage cues, and they are cues, not structure.
At 700 g, about 1.5 lb, it weighs more than the 1.1 lb Herschel Classic and less than most packs that carry a framesheet. Shoulder straps adjust between 480 and 820 mm and the back panel is 410 mm long, contoured and padded but with no hip belt and no sternum strap in the feature bullets. Four of the five colorways carry a water-resistant tag in Bellroy's catalog data; the discounted Indigo does not, and no rating is given for any of them.
Six years on the bag, 30 days to change your mind
Bags sit in Bellroy's six-year tier, extended from three years in November 2024, with wallets and accessories at three years and luggage at ten. Coverage is for manufacturing faults, and the exclusions are ordinary: wear, aging, misuse, and packing beyond what the bag was designed for. Bellroy asks for a verifiable receipt or order record and handles claims by email with photographs of the fault, and it is explicit that a bag packed past its capacity is outside normal use.
Regret returns are open for thirty days, timed from delivery, with the bag in original condition and packaging, the buyer covering the postage back, and refunds sent to the card used to order; damaged or wrong-item deliveries get a prepaid slip and the shipping refunded as well. Bellroy ships to US addresses at no charge and usually dispatches inside two working days. On price, $145 buys 20 liters where the Herschel Classic buys 26 for $60; the Bellroy is the more finished object and the Herschel the roomier one, and leather trim does not change the second fact.
Spot-clean only, and keep it out of the washing machine
Bellroy's care guidance for fabric bags is to spot-clean: wipe mild marks with a damp sponge, and for grease or protein stains dilute an enzymatic dish or laundry liquid in water, work it in gently, then wipe the residue away, because leftover detergent degrades the water-repellent coating over time. Powder detergents, fabric softeners and bleach are ruled out, and detergent should never be poured straight onto the fabric.
Machine washing and soaking are both advised against, and the bag should dry in shade away from direct sun. The leather accents follow the leather rules: keep them dry, blot rather than rub if they get wet, and condition them occasionally. For a bag whose appeal is the matte finish and the trim, the upkeep is part of the price, so weigh it alongside the $145.
Skip it if volume is the job
The Classic Backpack is a 20-liter office bag with a price that reflects its finish. If the daily load is a laptop plus gym clothes, a camera body or a week's shopping, 20 liters will be short by the second stop, and the Herschel Classic's 26 liters at $60 covers that with money to spare. Nothing about Bellroy's leather trim or drop-down panel makes the interior larger than the number on the label.
The same applies if you need a hip belt, a sternum strap or a stated rain rating; Bellroy lists a water-resistant fabric, not a waterproof bag, and there is no belt to move weight off the shoulders. And if the plan is to overstuff it, the six-year coverage leaves out damage from packing beyond design, so buy the volume you actually carry, not the volume you hope to squeeze in.
