The pillow on boppy.com today is not the Original Support Nursing Pillow that carried the Boppy name for decades. It is sold simply as the Boppy Nursing Pillow at $50, in 22 printed covers, and Boppy's FAQ explains why: a federal Safety Standard for Nursing Pillows, 16 CFR 1242, took effect for products made from April 23, 2025, and the company redesigned the pillow around it. The product care index marks the Original Nursing Pillow as discontinued.
Boppy's safe-use wording is the frame for everything below. The product instructions end with "Always use with adult supervision and while baby is awake", the cart carries an acknowledgment line that the pillow is for "adult-supervised awake-time only and never for infant sleep", and the full warning label is quoted in its own section. This review is based on those pages and is not medical advice.
Our verdict
Buy it if you want a feeding pillow that Boppy says was built to the 2025 federal nursing pillow standard and you accept a firmer shape, a pillow that cannot go in the washer, and a use case limited to awake, supervised feeding.
- A good fit for
- Parents planning to feed on a chair or sofa while seated, who want a zip-off cover they can launder often and are willing to spot-clean the pillow underneath.
- We would skip it if
- You expect to wash the whole pillow, you own Original-shape covers you hoped to reuse, or any part of your plan involves lounging, propping, tummy time or letting the baby doze on it.
Reasons to consider it
- Boppy states the pillow is JPMA Certified and Baby Safety Alliance Verified and was tested to 16 CFR Part 1242 at CPSC-accredited laboratories
- The cover unzips and machine washes at 65-85F on gentle, then tumble dries low, so the part that catches spit-up is the part that cleans easily
- $50 buys the pillow with a printed cover in 22 patterns, all listed as available on the check date
The compromises
- The pillow itself is spot clean only, and Boppy says it may need replacing "after a few years, similar to your mattress"
- Covers from the discontinued Original do not fit this shape, so an existing cover collection becomes dead stock
- Boppy describes the new fill as closer to mattress firmness; the softer feel of the old pillow is gone by design
What we have not verified: Boppy gives no dimensions, weight, or country of origin for the pillow on the pages captured. Whether pre-April-2025 Original stock is still sold through other retailers remains unconfirmed; boppy.com lists the Original as discontinued on its product care index. Comfort, latch and posture claims are Boppy's and are unverified here.
The things in this guide
A closer look at the products, who they may suit, and what to check before buying.

Boppy Nursing Pillow
Boppy's mainline pillow, which the company says was tested to the 2025 federal standard, with a zip-off cover that survives a normal laundry cycle and a warranty of one year.
Before you buy: The pillow underneath cannot be machine washed, and Boppy limits use to awake, supervised feeding; it rules out sleep, lounging, propping and tummy time in writing.

Boppy's FAQ lists three changes. The opening is wider, "with arms set apart rather than wrapping around in a closed 'C' shape", which the company says fits more adult bodies. The pillow is firmer with a higher loft, because the 2025 standard requires nursing pillows "to be closer to mattress firmness" and Boppy met it by packing in more recycled fiber. And the pillow is now wrapped in a water-repellent liner and is spot-clean only, where the Original could go through a front-load washer. Anyone used to sinking into the old pillow should expect a different object.
The knock-on cost is covers. Boppy states that "Original Boppy Nursing Pillow covers do not fit the New Boppy Nursing Pillow", though several Original prints have been reissued in the new shape. The FAQ also says Original pillows made before April 2025 "will continue to be sold", while the product care index labels the Original as discontinued; on the check date no Original pillow was listed for sale on boppy.com. A shopper who wants the old softness would have to find remaining retail stock elsewhere, and this review could not confirm where.
Materials And Washing
The fabric content on the listing reads "Fill: 100% polyester, Skin: 80% polyester/20% Cotton, Cover: 100% polyester". The FAQ adds that the fill is recycled polyester fiberfill and that the skin is a water-repellent protective liner. Boppy also states that the fabric and filling "have never contained harmful flame retardant chemicals" and are exempt from California Bureau of Home Furnishings flammability standards. The printed cover zips off; Boppy sells standard, organic cotton and luxe covers separately, but the one in the box is the 100% polyester print you pick from the 22 variants.
Washing splits into two regimes. The cover: "Remove Cover and wash separately. Zip closed before washing. Machine wash cool 65-85F (18-30C), gentle cycle. Non-chlorine bleach if needed. Tumble dry low on delicate cycle. Cool iron if needed. Do not dry clean." The pillow: "Spot Clean Only." That second line is the one that changes daily life, since a blowout that soaks through the cover means dabbing at the liner instead of running a load. Boppy's FAQ is candid that because the new pillows are not machine washable, "you may find they need to be replaced after a few years, similar to your mattress".
Boppy's Safe-Use Wording, Verbatim
The product instructions are three lines, "Always use while sitting", "Place it around your waist with the opening toward your back or side depending on your feeding style", "Feed baby comfortably", followed by "Always use with adult supervision and while baby is awake." The warning label reads: "BABIES HAVE DIED USING NURSING PILLOWS FOR SLEEP OR LOUNGING. Babies can move without warning and CAN SUFFOCATE within minutes if their airway is blocked. Only use this product for feeding baby. Move baby to an infant sleep product, like a crib or bassinet, if baby falls asleep or if you feel drowsy. Never leave or prop baby along on this product. Never place this product where baby sleeps. Babies have been injured from FALLS. Do not use to prop up baby on beds, sofas, or other raised surfaces. Never use to carry baby."
Boppy's FAQ answers the sleep question directly: "No. Never allow baby to sleep on a nursing pillow. Boppy nursing pillows are created for adult-supervised awake-time only." It also states that babies "should never be placed on nursing pillows for propping, sitting or tummy time". The Recall & Safety Alerts page describes a voluntary recall of the Newborn Lounger conducted with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission after infant suffocation deaths; that page concerns the lounger, not this pillow, and no separate 2022 sleep-warning text appears on the nursing pillow pages. None of this is medical advice, and questions about feeding position belong with a pediatrician or lactation professional.
Price, Returns And Warranty
Every one of the 22 prints was $50.00 on the check date, and every variant reported as in stock. Boppy's cart notes free shipping on orders of $75 or more, so a single pillow ships at a charge unless something else is added; the amount was not shown on the pages captured. The FAQ's return terms are narrower than many baby retailers: returns are accepted up to 30 days from purchase on boppy.com, on "non-sale merchandise that is unused and unopened or items that have been found to be defective", shipping charges are not refunded, and purchases from other retailers must go back to those retailers.
The warranty statement on the safe-use page covers "material defects, damage caused by improper care prior to the time of purchase, and workmanship defects for one year from the date of purchase", with repair or replacement at Boppy's discretion. Given that the unused-and-unopened return condition rules out trying the pillow at home and sending it back, the practical decision is made from Boppy's description of firmness and opening width, not from a trial. The FAQ's note that the new pillows should not go flat, because of the higher fill volume, is the closest thing to a durability claim on the site.
When To Skip It
Pass on it if a washable pillow is non-negotiable. Boppy's Original could be machine washed and this one cannot, and the company acknowledges the trade by suggesting replacement after a few years. Pass if you were counting on Original-shape covers, whether hand-me-downs or ones bought earlier, since Boppy confirms they do not fit. And pass if you want the soft, enveloping feel the Original was known for; Boppy has moved the design toward mattress firmness on purpose and says so.
Also step away if the intended use is anything other than seated feeding. Boppy's wording rules out sleep, lounging, propping, sitting support, tummy time and carrying, and the cart repeats the awake-only limit as an acknowledgment line. For a parent who wants a supported seated feed, a cover that washes and dries on a normal cycle, and a maker that states its standards testing and its limits in writing, the $50 Boppy Nursing Pillow does that job, and it is the only shape Boppy now sells at this price.
