The Smart Waffle Pro 4-Slice sits at the top of Breville's current US waffle line by price: type BWM640 in the single listed finish, Brushed Stainless Steel, at $299.95 behind a working Add to cart button on breville.com (in stock 2026-09-30, re-checked 2026-10-01), under the site banner "Free Shipping Over $49". The published record is short and specific: 1800 W at 110-120 V, 14.9 x 12.3 x 5.1 inches, four slices, four batter settings plus a custom one against 12 color settings, stainless housing over deep cast-aluminum plates, a BPA-free dosing cup in the box, and a one-year limited warranty.
What Waffle IQ adjusts is time. The product page says the machine "automatically calculates the correct cooking time for whatever style of waffle & color you select"; the booklet adds plate temperature as a third input, so a repeat batch can open on another number. Neither page lists a temperature control - the settings Breville names are batter types and color. And the same display with the same four batter types is sold in a two-slice body for $249.95, which puts the remaining $50 on capacity.
Our verdict
Buy the $299.95 Pro 4-Slice when four squares have to land at once; the same timing automation comes in a 2-slice body at $249.95, and a $169.95 round iron skips it entirely.
- A good fit for
- Families who fill four squares at once and want to dial a batter type and a color instead of learning cook times; kitchens with about 23 inches of clear counter and a grounded socket.
- We would skip it if
- Households of two - the Pro 2-Slice carries the same display and darkness range at $249.95 - and kitchens that want plates which come off for the sink. Nothing here detaches.
Reasons to consider it
- The timing model takes three inputs: Breville calculates the cooking time from the waffle type, the darkness setting and the temperature of the plates, so a second batch can run on a different clock from a cold first one
- Four deep squares of cast aluminum under 1800 W; the overflow moat is built into the same frame, so stray batter is caught and cooked in place instead of baked onto the counter
- The controls are documented, not left to feel: 12 darkness stops with a suggested starting point of 6, A BIT MORE that extends a cycle before, during or just after it, RESTART between batches, and a fresh alert every 30 seconds while a cooked waffle sits
The compromises
- The plates do not come off. The booklet's washing routine is a soft cloth on the cooking plates and the overflow moat, with no immersion, no metal utensils and no cooking sprays
- It stores as a flat 14.9 x 12.3 x 5.1-inch slab with the latch locked and the cord wrapped underneath, with 10 cm of air asked for on every side of the machine
- The $50 over the non-Pro 4-Slice buys no extra heat - both pages read 1800 W - and no extra calculation, because BWM604 carries a Waffle IQ row too; what changes is the display and the buttons
What we have not verified: Breville publishes no cook-time table for the presets, so the only countdown on its own pages is the 3:29 shown against Classic in the listing photo, and batch length has to be learned at the counter. No weight appears in the BWM640 record although three siblings carry one; the Amazon table's 6.93 kg and 8.82 x 15.75 x 18.5-inch row does not match Breville's own dimensions, so neither number is used here. Breville's store-locator page names seven online stockists and neither Amazon nor TheProviders is among them, but that list calls itself some of the big retailers, so the merchant's authorization status stays unproven either way.
The things in this guide
A closer look at the products, who they may suit, and what to check before buying.

the Smart Waffle Pro 4 Slice · BWM640
Four deep cast-aluminum squares under 1800 W at $299.95 direct, a POWER | MENU dial with four waffle types plus CUSTOM, 12 darkness stops, an LCD that counts a time calculated per batch, A BIT MORE and RESTART buttons, and the dosing cup. The moat that catches and cooks overflow is part of the plate frame, and the twelve-month cover runs through Breville support, which sends a paid label.
Before you buy: Plates and moat are fixed: cloth only, never immersed, no metal utensils, no cooking sprays. The booklet asks for 10 cm of air on every side, and the unit stores flat at 14.9 x 12.3 x 5.1 inches.

Breville's wording is that the machine "automatically calculates the correct cooking time for whatever style of waffle & color you select", and the technical block reduces that to two countable sets: four batter settings, twelve color settings. No page in the record offers a temperature setting - the controls Breville names are the menu dial, the darkness dial and two buttons. The element is rated 1800 W on 110-120 V, and color is chosen on the dial marked LIGHT to DARK.
The booklet supplies a third input. Repeat batches can show a different countdown from the one you just ran, Breville says, because Waffle IQ reads the temperature of the cooking plates along with the waffle type and the darkness stop. A first run off a cold plate and a later run on plates that have been cooking for several batches can get different clocks.
Turning the POWER | MENU dial brings up 'HEATING'; an alert and an orange display mark preheat; opening the lid turns it blue with 'Close lid to start'; closing it without the latch starts the count, because the handle carries a switch. 'End' and an alert finish the cycle, with another alert every 30 seconds if the waffles stay. One press of A BIT MORE extends the cycle - Breville says the extra time is proportional to the total - and RESTART resets the count for the next batch.
Five rungs, read off Breville's own pages
The US line is five models, and every price below is the buy button on that model's own breville.com page. The No-mess Waffle (BWM520) is $169.95: one round classic waffle about 6-5/8 by 5-5/8 inches, 900 W, a browning dial with seven color settings, a ready light, no Waffle IQ row and no display. The Smart Waffle 2 Slice (BWM602) shows $179.95 under a disabled Out of stock button with Notify Me beside it, in the range but not orderable.
Two rungs share $249.95 - the Smart Waffle 4 Slice (BWM604) beside the Pro 2 Slice (BWM620) - and that is where the axes cross: one price, two different machines, four squares with a ready light against two squares with a screen. Both four-slice pages read 1800 W, and each lists the moat, the deep cast-aluminum plates and the same even-heat wording, so the gap to the Pro 4-Slice buys the LCD, A BIT MORE, RESTART and the dosing cup; the power is already there. The cheaper 4-Slice has its own Waffle IQ row; what it lacks is a screen to show the result.
The 2-slice branch is where a household saves without giving up the timing. The Pro 2-Slice page lists the same four batter types, the same twelve color settings and the same dosing cup at 11.2 inches across against 14.9, on 1000 W against the four-slice 1800. Two people eating off a two-square plate get the calculated countdown at $249.95, and the third and fourth squares are what the remaining $50 buys.
23 inches of counter, and a slab that has to lie flat
The published footprint is 14.9 x 12.3 x 5.1 inches, and the setup steps ask for at least 4 inches (10 cm) of space on all sides of the machine, with nothing placed on top of it - an unconditional placement rule, not a hot-surface caveat. Add the body to the air Breville prints: 14.9 inches plus 4 left and right, 12.3 plus 4 front and back, which comes to about 23 by 20 inches.
Storage is flat, not upright. The routine is dial to OFF, unplug, cool completely, set the locking latch, wrap the cord in the recess under the unit, and put it away on a flat, dry, level surface. There is no vertical-storage step in the booklet, so the 5.1-inch height is the dimension a shelf has to clear, and the 14.9-inch length is the one a cupboard floor has to hold.
Weight is the figure the listing does not print: 14 lb appears for the non-Pro 4-Slice, 6.7 lb for the No-Mess and 10.41 lb for the non-Pro 2-Slice, and nothing at all for the Pro 4-Slice. Amazon's details table says 6.93 kg, but the same table gives 8.82 x 15.75 x 18.5 inches against Breville's 14.9 x 12.3 x 5.1, so it looks like carton data and is left out as the machine's weight.
Nothing comes off, and that is the design
The coating covers the cooking plates, the hinges and the overflow moat, and nothing in that list comes off. Breville's wipe step names the cooking plates and the overflow moat only, with a soft cloth, after every use, while the machine is still slightly warm, and adds warm soapy water plus a non-abrasive plastic pad or nylon brush for stubborn residue. Do not immerse any part. No metal utensils on a cooked waffle, no abrasive tools on the finish, and no non-stick cooking sprays, which Breville says affect the plate surface.
The $89.95 KRUPS four-slicer in Amazon's search results for this model carries "Removable Plates" in its title line, and Breville's own category page claims removable plates for some two-plate and four-plate models. The booklet covering the BWM640 has no removal step and forbids immersion, so the Pro 4-Slice gets cleaned where it stands.
The moat's job is to catch batter that strays and cook it in place, so the counter stays clean during the cycle and the mess lands on a surface you are wiping anyway. The dosing cup is BPA-free, sized by Breville for two waffles, with the booklet's pour at about half a cup per square, batter to the peaks - a full four-square batch is roughly two cups, dosed twice.
What $299.95 covers, and where the channel matters
The direct number is $299.95 behind a working Add to cart, and the site banner's $49 threshold covers delivery, so the order lands at $299.95. The only item the listing includes is the dosing cup, and no published figure or cleaning step names a part that wears out on a schedule.
Coverage lasts a year and is limited, and it runs through support instead of the shop door. Do not take the appliance back to a retailer; call or write Breville Consumer Support, and a prepaid shipping label follows once a claim is accepted, with a turnaround Breville calls typical and caps at 10 days, counting business days only, plus shipping. The remedy is Breville's to pick - repair, swap or a refund - and a receipt is required while registration is not. Ordinary wear, use contrary to the manual and purchases outside Breville's authorized channel are all excluded.
That last exclusion bears on the Amazon listing. Amazon's box for the same SKU is the same $299.95, in stock and delivered by Amazon but sold by TheProviders, a marketplace merchant, under a buying-options row that moved between readings - two new offers from $292.52 on 2026-09-30, from $299.45 on 2026-10-01; the dollars-off line under the price is an Amazon Visa approval offer, not a shelf price, and its amount changed between readings too.
Breville's store-locator page lists seven online stockists - Williams Sonoma, Sur La Table, Best Buy, Crate & Barrel, Bloomingdales, Macy's, Target - and names neither Amazon nor TheProviders. That list calls itself some of the big retailers, so it proves nothing about this merchant; it does mean that a cheaper offer from a seller Breville has not authorized would fall outside Breville's warranty.
Breville takes an appliance back only inside 30 days of receipt, and only if it came from Breville USA itself, is in brand-new condition packed as it arrived, and carries a Return Authorization good for 14 calendar days; parts or accessories alone are non-returnable. A unit that fails out of the box is handled as Dead On Arrival if raised within 30 calendar days of the invoice date, with a replacement shipped at Breville's expense. Buy elsewhere and that window belongs to whoever sold it.
Three households that should stop lower down the line
Skip it for two. The Pro 2-Slice has the same display, the same four batter types and the same twelve color settings at $249.95, at 3.7 inches narrower, and its working envelope, with the same 4 inches of air on every side, comes to about 19 by 20 inches instead of 23 by 20. If the household is four, or if the extras get frozen for later, the fourth square earns its $50.
Skip the automation if waffles are a monthly event. The No-Mess at $169.95 cooks a single round classic waffle on 900 W through a seven-stop browning dial and a ready light, and it weighs 6.7 lb where the non-Pro 4-Slice on the same shelf carries 14 lb. Below all of this, the same Amazon page that lists the BWM640 carried a KRUPS four-slicer at $89.95 whose title line promises plates that come off for the sink, on both days it was read.
And skip it if the washing rule is the deal-breaker. The plates and the moat are wiped where they sit after every use, and no part goes under the tap. Breville's answer to overflow is the moat and the cup it ships - half a cup a square, to the peaks - which keeps the routine short, but it stays a cloth job with no dishwasher step.
