Cabeau makes a dozen variations on the same U-pillow, and the Evolution S3 is the cheapest one that includes the feature the company built its name on: two webbing straps sewn to the back that loop around an airplane headrest and hold the pillow, and your head, against the seat. The pillow is memory foam with a deliberately flat back so it does not shove the neck forward, raised sides to stop the head rolling, and a sliding cord clasp at the front. Cabeau's US store lists it at $39.99 in Steel, Indigo and Jet Black.
Everything else is standard for the category: a removable cover you can wash, and a drawstring bag that Cabeau says compresses the pillow to a third of its size with a clip for a bag strap. The question a buyer has to answer is not whether the foam is good but whether the seats they actually sleep in have a headrest the straps can grab. Cabeau's own pages describe the strap system for plane seats, gaming chairs and theater seats; they say nothing about the seats where it will not work.
Our verdict
A sensible $39.99 pillow whose value depends on one thing you can check in advance: whether the seats you sleep in let you loop a strap behind the headrest. Where they do, the strapped design has a real advantage over a plain U-shape; where they do not, you have paid for an idea you cannot use.
- A good fit for
- A flyer who sleeps in economy window or middle seats with a wraparound or winged headrest, and who nods forward instead of sideways.
- We would skip it if
- You mostly sleep on trains, buses or bulkhead seats with no reachable headrest, you run hot in memory foam, or you want the slimmer fit Cabeau now sells at a higher price.
Reasons to consider it
- Two seat straps anchor the pillow so the head cannot drop forward, the weak point of every plain U-pillow
- Flattened back and raised sides keep the neck from being pushed forward by the seat
- Removable washable cover, sliding front clasp, and a compression bag that clips to luggage
The compromises
- The straps only work on seats with a headrest you can reach behind; Cabeau lists none of the seat types it fails on
- Cabeau lists no weight, dimensions or foam density for the S3, so packed size is a guess beyond the one-third claim
- The lifetime replacement benefit requires joining Cabeau Club and registering in the first 30 days of ownership; the base warranty is one year with a $10 fee per replacement
What we have not verified: The pillow was not worn or packed here. Foam firmness, heat build-up, how the straps behave on a slick leather headrest, and how far the bag really compresses it were not assessed.

A plain U-pillow fails in one predictable way: the head slides forward off the front opening, the airway narrows, and you jerk awake. Cabeau's answer is two lengths of webbing on the back of the pillow that wrap around the headrest and fasten, so the pillow is held to the seat and the head is held to the pillow. Combined with the front clasp that closes the U under the chin, the head has nowhere to fall. Cabeau sells the same straps as a $24.99 accessory for its other pillows, which tells you how central the company thinks they are.
The mechanism has an obvious precondition: a headrest with a gap or a wing you can pass a strap behind. Most economy seats qualify, many premium seats with solid shells and a lot of bus, coach and train seats do not, and a bulkhead wall gives you nothing. Cabeau's pages list plane seats, gaming chairs and theater seats as targets and stop there. If the straps will mostly hang loose, the $29.99 Evolution Classic is the same idea without them and saves $10.
Flat back, raised sides, and a clasp that does the adjusting
The foam is shaped, not simply cut from a block. The back of the U is flattened so the pillow does not wedge between skull and seat and push the chin down; the two sides rise higher than the back to block sideways roll; and the front is closed by a cord and toggle that slide to set how tight the collar sits. Cabeau describes the cover fabric as moisture-wicking and abrasion-resistant, with a zipper seam at the back where the care label lives, and it is removable for washing.
What Cabeau does not publish for the S3 is any number: no weight, no width or height, no foam density, no cover composition. The one sizing claim on the page is that the included bag compresses the pillow to a third of its volume, with a warning not to leave it compressed longer than a month or the foam may not recover. Cabeau's line now includes a TNE S3 at $49.99 and a Slim TNE S3 Deluxe at $59.99 that the site bills as a slimmer fit, which is the company's way of admitting that the standard S3 is a full collar and that some necks want less of it.
One year by default, lifetime if you register in time
Cabeau's standard cover runs one year from the purchase date for manufacturing defects or damage present at purchase, and the remedy is a replacement part, a replacement pillow, or an equivalent product if the style is gone. Each replacement carries a $10 handling fee plus shipping. A claim goes by email with a photo of the defect, a receipt showing the store and date, and a legible photo of the white care label sewn into the back zipper seam; Cabeau may ask you to document destroying the pillow instead of mailing it back.
The lifetime cover advertised next to the price is a Cabeau Club benefit: sign up, register each pillow in the first 30 days of ownership, and you can replace one product per year. Miss the 30-day registration and you are back to the one-year term. Separately, unused pillows in original packaging can be returned free in the US for 30 days. Cabeau ships fast, often inside 30 minutes of payment, but advises against ordering online if you need the pillow within five business days, and shipping fees are not refunded.
Forty dollars in the middle of Cabeau's own range
Within Cabeau's line the S3 at $39.99 sits $10 above the strapless Evolution Classic at $29.99 and $10 below the TNE S3 at $49.99, a redesigned collar whose differences the S3 page does not spell out. The Deluxe versions at $59.99 to $69.99 sit higher again, and nothing on the S3 page quantifies what the upgrade buys. For a first strapped pillow the base S3 is the sensible entry: the straps are identical to the accessory the company sells for $24.99, so most of what you pay for is already in the cheapest strapped model.
Against a generic $15 memory-foam U-pillow, the honest comparison is the straps and the flat back; the foam itself is not documented well enough on Cabeau's site to claim it is better. Shipping is free on US orders above $35 by Cabeau's cart rule, so the $39.99 pillow ships free on its own. Sale pricing was not in effect when the page was read, and the three colors were all listed in stock.
Skip it if your seats have nothing to strap to
Leave the S3 on the shelf if the seats you sleep in are bus benches, train seats with solid headrests, or the bulkhead row, because the straps are what the extra $10 over the $29.99 Classic buys and they need a headrest with a gap behind it. Pass too if you sleep hot: the S3 is a full memory-foam collar with a cover Cabeau calls moisture-wicking but does not describe as cooling, and the company sells a separate Evolution Cool model whose name points at that complaint.
Also hesitate if you have a short neck or dislike a collar that reaches the jaw. Cabeau now sells a Slim TNE S3 Deluxe billed as a slimmer fit, which implies the standard shape is not, and without published dimensions there is no way to confirm the fit from a screen. Buy the S3 for the anchoring idea, register it in those first 30 days, and accept that its foam is an unknown quantity until it is on your neck.
