In this guide
A gift for someone else's child carries a question the giver cannot answer from the wrapping: is it safe for the kid it is going to? The honest source for that answer is the maker, and makers differ enormously in how much they print. One names a standards body and a certifier and follows it with a block of capitalized warnings. One prints an age badge and nothing about small parts. One publishes a safety data sheet for the liquid in the bottle and no age at all. One prints no age anywhere.
That spread is the sorting principle here. Four products from our guides, each already reviewed on its own, are grouped by what their makers publish about safety and age: a named standard with warnings, an age line alone, a materials sheet alone, and silence. The point is not that the quiet products are unsafe; it is that the giver has to know which kind of quiet they are buying, because a missing sentence on a gate and a missing sentence on a board game mean very different things.
The things in this guide
A closer look at the products, who they may suit, and what to check before buying.

Easy Step Safety Gate, White (Model 1160)
Regalo names the Baby Safety Alliance as certifier of the Easy Step and ASTM as the standards body it meets, prints an age band of 6 to 24 months, and follows with capitalized warnings that the gate must never be placed at the top of a staircase and that wall cups must be installed. For a new-baby gift that a parent will install, that is the most checkable wording in this guide.
Before you buy: Regalo leaves the price off the gate's page and offers only an add-to-registry action; the store's own entry for the white gate carries $50.99 and is marked not available, so the price a giver acts on is a retailer's: $44.98 from Amazon on October 5, 2026. The warranty is six months, and a 32-to-35-inch doorway needs a 4-inch extension the carton does not contain, which the giver cannot know without asking for a measurement.

Shape-Sorting Cube
The $20.99 Shape-Sorting Cube is twelve solid wood shapes and a lidded 6.3-inch hardwood cube, and Melissa & Doug prints a 2+ years badge, an ages-two-and-older line and a 2-to-5 range on the same page, so the floor is clear.
Before you buy: No choking-hazard or small-parts wording appears in the page text and no shape dimension is published, so for a household with a younger sibling who mouths toys, the giver has nothing from the maker to measure against.

Multi-Surface Satin Acrylic Paint 10 Color Set, Celebrations (7510)
Plaid's ten-bottle set lists at $15.99 on plaidonline.com. It is covered by two safety data sheets that list no GHS label elements, no hazardous ingredients and no respiratory protection or ventilation requirement, which is as clean a disclosure as craft paint gets.
Before you buy: Plaid's set page prints neither an age recommendation nor a toy-safety marking, so the sheets describe the liquid and say nothing about the child, and the dishwasher claim comes with a cure period Plaid never states.

Wingspan (base game, current printing with swift-start pack)
Stonemaier's store page and game page for Wingspan give player count, play time, a full component list and a replacement-parts promise, and neither prints a minimum age; for a tween or teen at a family table, the component list is the safety wording.
Before you buy: With 75 egg miniatures, 103 food tokens and 40 action cubes in the box, the absence of an age line means the giver, not the publisher, is the one deciding whether a younger child shares the house.

The most useful thing a maker can print is a name the buyer can look up: a standards body, a certifier, a test method. Second best is a warning in the maker's wording, because it tells you what the maker fears. Third is an age line, which is a claim about suitability with no stated basis. Fourth is a materials disclosure, useful for the substance and mute about the user. Last is nothing, which forces the giver to reason from the contents of the box.
Two cautions about reading that order. A named standard is not a guarantee of anything beyond what the standard covers, and the giver rarely knows what that is; Regalo names ASTM but not a standard number, so even Regalo's disclosure is partial. And silence has different weights. A board game publisher that prints no age is leaving a judgment to parents of children old enough to read cards; a toy maker that prints an age and no hazard sentence is leaving out the line that usually accompanies that age. The four picks below follow that order: the gate covers kinds one and two, and the sorter, the paint and the game take one each.
The gate: a certifier, a standards body and a warning block a giver can read aloud
Regalo's page for the Easy Step is the fullest disclosure in this guide. The feature list names two bodies: the Baby Safety Alliance, which Regalo says certified the gate, and the American Society for Testing and Materials, whose safety standards Regalo says it meets. The product tags in the store data repeat astm and jpma, and the age line is printed twice over, as 6-24 months in the feature list and as children from 6 months through 24 months in the safety block.
Then comes a block headed Safety Guidelines and WARNING: to prevent falls, never use at top of stairs; install according to the manufacturer's instructions; children have died or been seriously injured when gates are not securely installed; you must install wall cups to keep the gate in place, because without them a child can push out and escape; stop using the gate when a child can climb over or dislodge it; never use it to keep a child away from a pool.
For a giver, that wording makes clear that the gift is only correct at the bottom of a staircase or in a doorway, never at the top.
What Regalo does not print is a standard number, or a price. The gate's own entry in the store data carries $50.99 for the white model and is marked not available, and the product block offers only an add-to-registry action, so the number a giver acts on is a retailer's; Amazon shipped and sold the white gate at $44.98 on October 5, 2026. Regalo's page adds a manufacturer's limited warranty of six months and a fit chart whose gap is a trap for gift givers in particular, because an opening between 32 and 35 inches needs a 4-inch extension the carton lacks. Ask for the doorway width before ordering, or give the receipt and let the parent choose the model.
The sorter: an age floor printed three times, and the sentence that is missing beside it
Melissa & Doug prints the age of the $20.99 Shape-Sorting Cube in three places: a 2+ years badge over the price, a description ending with toddlers and preschoolers ages two and older, and a store tag of age: 2-3 years. Melissa & Doug describes twelve chunky shapes with rounded edges and a natural-finish hardwood cube of 6.3 inches on each side with a lid. What it does not print is any choking-hazard, small-parts or supervision sentence, and it gives no dimension for any of the twelve shapes. The single-product review flagged the same gap and noted that the retail box may carry a label the site omits; that was not confirmed.
For a gift going to a child of two in a house with no younger children, the age line is enough and the toy is a sound choice: solid wood, no batteries, the shapes stored inside the cube. For a household with an infant sibling, the missing sentence matters more than the badge, because a shape that fits through a hole in a wooden cube is a shape a younger child can pick up, and the maker offers no measurement to reassure anyone. The working reading is that the age floor is the maker's whole safety statement, and a giver who needs more should choose a toy whose maker prints it.
The paint: two safety sheets for the material, no line for the child
Plaid's Celebrations set is ten 2 oz bottles at a $15.99 regular price on plaidonline.com, in stock under SKU 7510.
Two safety data sheets cover it: a June 2022 sheet for the Multi-Surface Satin colors and an April 2024 sheet for the Metallic and Pearl line, which includes the Silver and Gold bottles. Both list no GHS label elements and no hazardous ingredients, both require no respiratory protection, special ventilation, gloves or goggles, and both mark the paint not combustible. That is more disclosure about the bottle's contents than most craft materials publish, and a document a giver can hand to a parent.
What the sheets cannot do is speak to the painter. Neither an age recommendation nor a toy-safety marking appears on the set page, so Plaid has published a full account of the liquid and nothing about who should be using it. The other unstated figure is the cure time behind the top-shelf dishwasher claim, which appears twice on the set page without a number of days. For a craft gift to a school-age child who paints at a kitchen table with an adult nearby, the sheets are reassuring and the missing age line is a small gap; for a younger child who chews brushes, the sheets describe a substance and leave the habit to the parent.
The game: no age anywhere, and why the component list stands in for one
Stonemaier's store page for Wingspan, $55 against a $65 regular price, lists 1 to 5 players, a play time given as 40 to 70 minutes in its spec block against 40 to 90 in its description, and an itemized box: 170 bird cards and 26 bonus cards, a 16-card Automa deck, 103 food tokens, 75 egg miniatures, five wooden dice, five player mats, a birdfeeder dice tower, 40 action cubes and three rulebooks. The publisher's game page adds credits, box dimensions and a list of 27 localization partners. Neither page prints a minimum age. The single-product review noted the same and declined to supply one; this guide does the same.
The silence is tolerable for a specific reason. A game whose rules are read from cards selects its own players; a child who cannot read the cards cannot play, and the publisher's medium-weight rating and 40-minute floor say as much as an age badge would. The component count is the safety wording that matters: 75 egg miniatures and 103 food tokens are small objects, and the giver is the one deciding whether a younger child lives in the house they are going to. For a tween or teen who already sits at the family table, the decision is easy; for a household with a toddler, the box is a shelf item until the toddler is not.
When the wording, or its absence, is the reason to choose something else
Skip the gate as a gift unless you can get a doorway measurement and a promise that it will not go at the top of stairs, because Regalo's own warnings make both conditions absolute and a giver cannot satisfy either from a distance. Skip the sorter for any household with a child under two, since every age line the maker prints starts there and no small-parts sentence supports an earlier start.
Skip the paint for a child young enough to put a brush in the mouth, because two safety sheets about the liquid are not a statement about that habit and Plaid prints no age to lean on. And skip Wingspan for a house with a toddler unless the recipient has a high shelf, since the publisher prints no age and the box holds 223 small pieces counted off its own list: 75 egg miniatures, 103 food tokens, 40 action cubes and five wooden dice. Give the product whose maker has printed the sentence your recipient's household needs; where the maker printed none, the giver is the one making that call.
