In this guide
A gift that comes in sizes or colors carries a risk the giver takes on alone: the recipient cannot walk it back to the maker, because the order sits under the giver's name and email. So this guide reads four items under $50 through one question, what it costs the buyer, in dollars and in days, to put right a wrong size or a wrong color.
The four are a $44 running cap in four sizes, $37.50 open-water goggles in nine colorways, a $39.99 strapped neck pillow in three colors, and a $29.95 packable tote in six. All four makers publish a return term and three publish something about exchanges. The terms differ more than the prices do, and not one of them counts days from the moment the wrapping comes off.
The things in this guide
A closer look at the products, who they may suit, and what to check before buying.

Sun Runner Cap, Khaki
Four sizes covering 21 to 24 inch heads, and Outdoor Research runs a US exchange path for a different size or color inside 60 days of the order, with the exchange label free.
Before you buy: The replacement ships to the address on the original order, so a cap sent straight to the recipient comes back to them, but one shipped to the giver's home goes there again. Because of its PFAS content, Outdoor Research declines to ship the cap to California, New York or Colorado.

Special Ops 2.0 Polarized Goggles · Smoke / Black
One adult size removes the fit gamble, and $37.50 buys a polarized lens for a lake or triathlon swimmer who has complained about glare.
Before you buy: TYR's exchange portal handles the same product in a different size only, which a one-size goggle cannot use. A wrong colorway means a return with a $9.99 label deduction in the 30 days that follow the order date, then a fresh order that pays its own shipping.

Evolution S3 Neck Pillow · Steel
Cabeau offers free US returns for 30 days from purchase on an unused pillow in its packaging, and a reorder at $39.99 clears the $35 free-shipping line, so a wrong color costs the giver nothing but a second wait.
Before you buy: Three colors, one size, and the straps only help on seats with a reachable headrest. The lifetime replacement benefit has to be registered in the first 30 days of ownership, by the account that bought it.

Packable Tote, 12 L, Charcoal
A 12 L zip-top tote at $29.95 is a low-stakes color choice, and Peak Design takes returns for 30 days from purchase.
Before you buy: US returns are handled by Frate at a flat fee that Peak Design's FAQ summary never prices, a reorder under $99 pays shipping again, and two of the six colors were out of stock when its page on peakdesign.com was read.

Outdoor Research allows a return or an exchange for 60 days measured from the order date. TYR gives 30 days from the order date. Cabeau gives 30 days from purchase. Peak Design gives 30 days from purchase. Not one of the four starts counting when the box is opened, and not one describes a holiday extension. The date on the order receipt is the only date the portal knows.
Run the arithmetic against a real calendar. A cap, goggles, pillow or tote ordered on November 20 for December 25 has used 35 days by the time it is unwrapped. On that schedule the TYR, Cabeau and Peak Design terms have already expired, and the Outdoor Research term has 25 days left. Buying early is the sensible instinct for shipping and stock; it is the wrong instinct for anything the recipient might need to swap. Order the fit-dependent gift last, or order it early and accept that the swap has to happen before the giving.
Only one of the four has a size to exchange, and its exchange has a routing quirk
The Sun Runner Cap is the only item here sold in sizes, S through XL for 21 to 24 inch heads, and Outdoor Research is also the only maker of the four with a published size-and-color exchange. The exchange is US-only, the label is free, inventory is not reserved, and the replacement leaves after the original arrives and passes inspection, with a stated 7 to 10 business day processing time. If the size wanted has sold out by then, the exchange silently becomes a refund to the card that paid.
One line in that page matters more for a gift than for a personal order: the replacement is always sent to the address on the original order and cannot be redirected. Ship the cap to the recipient and the swap lands with them; ship it to yourself to wrap it and the swap comes back to you. TYR's exchange, by contrast, exists only for the same product in another size, and the Special Ops 2.0 comes in one adult size, so for these goggles the exchange portal is a door with nothing behind it. The nine colorways are chosen once, at checkout.
What a wrong color costs, product by product
Cabeau is the cheapest mistake. A US return on an unused pillow still in its packaging is free for 30 days from purchase, and Cabeau's cart rule waives standard shipping for US orders above $35, so the $39.99 reorder in the right color ships free as well. The giver is out two waits and no money. Outdoor Research is nearly as kind: a color exchange uses a free label, and only a straight return for refund carries the $6.95 label charge. Both of these require the item to be unused, so a cap that has been worn once on a sunny walk is no longer swappable.
TYR and Peak Design charge for the do-over. TYR deducts $9.99 for its prepaid UPS label, refunds shipping on nothing, and waives shipping charges only from $175, so a wrong-color goggle costs $9.99 plus the shipping on a second $37.50 order. Peak Design hands US returns to Frate at a flat fee its FAQ summary leaves unquantified, and a $29.95 reorder sits well under the $99 free-shipping line. On a tote that costs $29.95 in the first place, a fee plus two shipping charges can approach half of what the gift cost. The unknown Frate figure is the one number in this guide that could not be confirmed from the maker.
The recipient cannot start any of this, and the warranties know it
All four portals open with an order number and the email on the order. Outdoor Research answers the gift question directly: someone who received an item as a gift is told to work with the person who bought it. The other three do not mention gifts at all, which amounts to the same thing. The practical consequence is that the giver stays on the hook for the whole term, must be reachable, and must be willing to handle the return on the recipient's behalf. A gift receipt, in the department-store sense, does not exist on any of these sites.
The same ownership question runs into the warranties. Outdoor Research's Infinite Guarantee lists gifts among its exclusions, along with fit and size complaints, so the cap's lifetime promise is written for the buyer. Peak Design starts a claim with registration in a Peak Design account and states that secondhand purchases are not covered; a gift is not secondhand, but the account is the giver's. Cabeau's lifetime replacement benefit activates only if the pillow is registered in the first 30 days of ownership. Hand over the order receipt with the gift, and register on the recipient's behalf where a form allows it, because not one of these makers says how a gift moves from one name to another.
When to skip the fit-dependent gift altogether
Skip the cap if the recipient lives in California, New York or Colorado, because Outdoor Research will not ship it there and an exchange cannot be routed there either. Pass too when you cannot get a head measurement, since a guess at medium has a 60-day fuse and the guarantee will not cover a size complaint after that. Skip the goggles if the recipient swims indoors, where the polarized lens solves nothing, or if you are choosing a colorway on instinct, because that instinct cannot be exchanged, only refunded for $9.99 less.
Skip the pillow when the seats the recipient sleeps in have no reachable headrest, and skip the tote when a checkout-counter foldable bag would do the same job for a few dollars. More generally, if the gift will be bought more than 30 days ahead of the occasion and the recipient might want a different color, Cabeau's free return and Outdoor Research's free exchange are the only two terms here that leave the giver whole, and even those close before the fifth week. None of the four items was handled for this guide; every term above comes from the maker pages cited, read on the date shown.
