The Recycling Truck is the Green Toys vehicle most people picture when the brand comes up: a squat garbage truck in two shades of green with three slots in the bed for bottles, cans and paper. The bed tips, the rear door opens and shuts, and there are no other moving parts. Green Toys lists it at $30.99 in the US and tags it for ages one to five.
What sets it apart from other toddler trucks is not the play pattern but the material. The body is molded from 100% recycled plastic, mostly milk jugs, with no metal axles anywhere, and it goes in the dishwasher. That combination is rare at this price, which is why the truck has stayed in the catalog long enough to carry award citations dating back to 2009. The complication is that Green Toys' own store had it, and almost everything else, marked sold out when this was written.
Our verdict
A sturdy, low-feature toddler truck whose material story is the point: recycled plastic, no metal parts, dishwasher cleanup. Buy it for a one- to three-year-old and expect it to outlast their interest.
- A good fit for
- A household after one push truck with a moving part or two, no batteries, no paint and a body that survives sand, bathwater and the top rack.
- We would skip it if
- Your child is past four and expects lights, sounds or a lifting arm, or you need it this week and the maker's store is still showing it sold out.
Reasons to consider it
- Molded from 100% recycled plastic, mostly post-consumer milk jugs, with no BPA, phthalates or PVC
- Tipping bed, opening rear door and three labeled sorting slots give a toddler something to do besides push
- No metal axles and a dishwasher-safe body, so cleanup after sand or food is trivial
The compromises
- Sold out on greentoys.com, along with nearly the whole catalog, so you may be buying from another retailer
- At 12 inches long it is a tabletop truck, not a ride-on or a sandbox hauler
- The current price of $30.99 sits above the struck-out $29.99, which reads as a price increase recorded as a sale
What we have not verified: The truck was not handled here; how freely the bed tips, how the door latch holds up and whether the plastic scuffs on concrete were not assessed. Green Toys no longer says where each toy is made, and this one is not labeled either way.
The things in this guide
A closer look at the products, who they may suit, and what to check before buying.

Recycling Truck
A 12-inch recycled-plastic truck with a tipping bed, a swinging rear door and three sorting slots, safe for the dishwasher and free of metal axles, at $30.99 from the maker.
Before you buy: Out of stock on greentoys.com when checked, two moving parts total, and no statement of where this particular truck is made.

Green Toys describes the play plainly: sort bottles, cans and paper into the slots, tip the bed, open the back door, repeat. The three slots are molded into the top of the bed and each carries a raised icon so a toddler can match the shape to the symbol without reading. The bed pivots at the rear so its contents slide out when the door is swung open, which is the whole loop of the toy and also the part most likely to get repeated a hundred times in an afternoon.
Nothing else moves. There is no lifting arm, no crank, no sound module and no driver figure. Green Toys tags the truck for three age bands, 1โ2, 2โ3 and 3โ5 years, and the lower end of that range is where the design makes sense. A child of five who has seen a real garbage truck with a hydraulic arm will notice what is missing. The maker also lists a Mickey Mouse and a Minnie Mouse version of the same truck at $34.99, which adds decals and four dollars, not features.
Milk jugs, mineral color, top rack
The material claim is specific. Green Toys says its toys are primarily made from recycled milk jugs collected after consumer use, with occasional other repurposed plastics, collected, cleaned, shredded into flakes and reprocessed before being combined with food-safe, mineral-based coloring. The Recycling Truck page repeats the 100% recycled figure and adds that the plastic contains no BPA, phthalates or PVC and meets FDA food-contact standards. There are no painted surfaces to chip and no external coatings, so the color you see is the color of the plastic itself.
The practical consequence is the cleaning routine. The truck can go in the dishwasher, and because it has no metal axles nothing inside can rust after a bath or a sandbox session. That matters more than it sounds for a toy that is tagged from age one, when everything gets mouthed. At 1.64 pounds and 12 by 6.25 by 7.25 inches it is heavy for its size, which is a feature for a toddler pushing it across a floor and a nuisance if it is thrown. The Shopify data lists a shipping weight closer to 2.3 pounds, so the 1.64 figure is the toy alone.
The USA-made claim has softened
Green Toys built its reputation on toys made in the USA, and the company's philosophy page still opens with that history: it started as a USA-made brand, still manufactures domestically, and has expanded production to selected partners abroad, with the same material and safety standards wherever a toy is made. The Recycling Truck page itself does not say which factory produced the current run, and the packaging was not seen here, so the origin of the unit you receive is unknown.
Safety testing is stated at the company level rather than per toy: the terms of service say all Green Toys products are tested to meet or exceed ASTM F963 and EN71. If the manufacturing location is part of why you were buying this truck over a cheaper one, the sourcing story is now weaker than it was, and the honest position is that the material claims still hold while the geography claim has been generalized.
Price, the sold-out store, and the return terms
The Green Toys store lists the Recycling Truck at $30.99 with a struck-out figure of $29.99 beside it, which is the odd case of a strikethrough lower than the sale price; the same pattern appears on the Cargo Plane and Construction Trucks, so it looks like a store-wide price increase presented through the sale-price field. More important than the dollar is the stock line: the truck showed as sold out, and a scan of the maker's product feed found only one item in the entire catalog available to buy. Missing pages on the site show a notice about parts of the store being closed for maintenance. Whether this is a transition to new manufacturing or a wind-down is not stated anywhere.
If you order from greentoys.com when stock returns, new and unopened items can be returned for a refund if the request arrives by day 30 after delivery, with return shipping on you unless the error was the store's. Refunds post in seven to ten business days after inspection. A toy that has been played with is outside those terms, and there is no separate product warranty page on the site, so a truck that cracks in month three is a customer-service conversation, not a policy claim. For comparison, the single Construction Trucks, a scooper, mixer or dumper, are $21.99 each and equally sold out.
When to skip it
Skip it if the child is already four or older and has opinions about garbage trucks. The Recycling Truck has a tipping bed and a door, and that is the full feature list; there is no arm to grab a bin, no cab that opens and no sound. Older children tend to want the mechanism they have seen on the street, and this toy deliberately does not provide it. The Green Toys Shape Sorter Truck at $34.99 covers the same age band with a different puzzle, if sorting is the draw.
Skip it for now, too, if you need a gift by a specific date and the maker's store is still showing it out of stock, unless you are comfortable buying through another retailer and accepting their return terms instead of Green Toys' own. Finally, if a US-made label is the reason this truck is on your list, check the box before you commit; the company no longer promises that for any given toy.
