In this guide
Sized hobby gear fails as a gift for a boring reason: the giver guessed medium. The fix is not to ask the recipient, which spoils the surprise, but to find one measurement that already exists somewhere in their life, a hat size, the number printed inside a boot, a height on a driver's license, and apply the maker's chart to it. That only works when the maker has actually published a chart, and the four makers here range from a full table in centimeters to nothing at all.
Bell prints a head circumference chart. Kahtoola prints two shoe-size charts and makes the giver answer a second question to choose between them. Manduka sells three mat lengths with no height rule beside them. TYR sells one size and gives no dimensions, so the returns rules become the fit test. Reading each maker's rule as written tells the giver how much a single measurement can carry before the purchase turns into a guess.
The things in this guide
A closer look at the products, who they may suit, and what to check before buying.

Bell Avenue Mips
Bell's Avenue Mips is $53.97 on sale from $89.95, and its chart maps head circumference directly to size: S/M for 50 to 57 cm, M/L for 53 to 60 cm, with hat-size equivalents printed alongside for a giver who only knows the recipient buys a 7 1/8 cap.
Before you buy: The two rows overlap by 4 cm, so a 55 cm head fits both, and the size picker also offers UA and UXL with no chart rows at all. Bell processes no direct exchanges; a wrong size is a return and a second order.

MICROspikes Footwear Traction, Black
Kahtoola's $89.95 MICROspikes are charted by US, EU and youth shoe size across XS to XXL, so the number inside the recipient's hiking boot is enough to pick a row, provided the giver also knows whether those boots are insulated.
Before you buy: The two charts shift a men's 9 from M on hiking shoes to L on insulated boots. Returns require an authorization number, unused condition and postage paid by the customer, so a wrong band is not free to fix.

PRO Yoga Mat 6mm, Standard 71 in (SKU 111011010)
The $144 Manduka PRO in Standard length is 71 in, or 5 ft 11 in, with Short at 68 in and Long at 85 in, and the mat's dimensions are printed plainly enough that the giver can set the recipient's height beside them and choose.
Before you buy: Manduka publishes no height at which Standard becomes Long, only a line that its larger mats suit taller practitioners. The comparison is the giver's own, and a mat unrolled and used cannot go back under the 30-day unused terms.

Special Ops 2.0 Polarized Goggles · Smoke / Black
TYR's Special Ops 2.0 Polarized goggle costs $37.50 in Smoke/Black and comes in one adult size, which removes the sizing problem for the giver entirely; the recipient wears it, or sends it back within TYR's 30 days.
Before you buy: TYR publishes no gasket or bridge dimensions, and its prepaid return label deducts $9.99 from the refund. Its size-exchange route, which only swaps one size of a product for another, has nothing to offer a one-size item.

Every sized object needs two things from a giver: a number about the recipient and a rule that turns the number into a size. The number is usually obtainable without a conversation. A hat in the hall closet has a size on its band, a boot has a US and EU size on its tongue, a height appears on any form the recipient has ever filled in, and not one of these requires asking what they want for their birthday. The rule is the maker's job, and it is where the four products here diverge.
Bell publishes the rule in full, a two-row table in centimeters, inches and hat sizes. Kahtoola publishes it twice and leaves the giver to pick the correct table. Manduka publishes the sizes, 68, 71 and 85 in, and no rule for choosing among them. TYR publishes one size and no dimensions, which is a different problem: there is no rule because there is no choice. The sections that follow apply one measurement to each and note what happens, and what it costs, when the number lands in a gap.
Bell Avenue Mips: circumference in, size out, with a 4 cm overlap
Bell's chart for the Avenue Mips is the cleanest rule of the four. S/M covers 50 to 57 cm and M/L covers 53 to 60 cm, and the same table gives inches and hat sizes, so a giver who knows only that the recipient wears a 7 1/8 fitted cap can still land in a row. At $53.97 against a $89.95 regular price, it is also the cheapest of the sized items here to get wrong, and Bell prints a one-month returns line beside the size picker.
Two things keep it from being automatic. The rows overlap from 53 to 57 cm, so a measurement in that band fits both sizes and the chart gives no tiebreaker; the size picker also lists UA and UXL, which have no chart rows, so a giver cannot say what head they cover. And Bell's process, as described in our single-product review, has no direct exchange, so a miss means a return and a fresh order. For a head measured outside 53 to 57 cm, the chart answers the question in one step; inside it, the giver is choosing between snug and roomy without maker guidance.
Kahtoola MICROspikes: the shoe size is not enough on its own
Kahtoola sells the MICROspikes at $89.95 in six sizes and prints two sizing tables, one for hiking shoes and boots and one for insulated boots, each in US women's, US men's, EU and youth sizes. A giver who has read the number inside the recipient's boot has the input, but the output depends on which table applies. On the hiking-shoe table a US men's 8 to 10 is M; on the insulated-boot table M is 7 to 9 and a men's 9.5 to 11.5 is L. A size 9 foot is M in one and sits at the top of M in the other, while a 10 flips from M to L.
So the single measurement here has to be paired with a fact about the footwear, which the giver can usually settle by looking at the boots by the door: a stiff, lined winter boot goes on the second table, a trail runner on the first. Kahtoola adds that bulky or narrow footwear may need a size up or down and points buyers to a dealer when between bands. The returns rules are stricter than Bell's: unused condition, an authorization number, and return postage paid by the customer, so a wrong band costs the giver shipping out and back on a purchase that was already the priciest sized item in this set.
Manduka PRO: three lengths, and the height rule is yours to write
Manduka's product page lists the PRO 6 mm in Short at 68 in, Standard at 71 in and Long at 85 in, all 26 in wide, at 7, 7.5 and 9.5 lb. The Black Standard is $144. What the page does not contain is a height at which a practitioner should move from Standard to Long; the nearest line describes the Long & Wide and Squared models as designed for taller practitioners, with no number attached. The measurement, the recipient's height, is easy to find. The rule that converts it is absent.
The giver can still reason from the printed lengths. Standard is 71 in, which is 5 ft 11 in, so a recipient taller than that lies down longer than the mat, and the Long adds 14 in; a recipient under about 5 ft 8 in has three inches to spare on Standard and could use Short. That is arithmetic from Manduka's dimensions, not a Manduka recommendation, and it ignores how the recipient practices. It matters because the returns rules allow no trial: unworn, unused, unaltered merchandise with tags and packaging in the 30 days that follow receipt, with a $5.99 processing fee deducted. A mat unrolled for one session is a mat the recipient keeps.
TYR Special Ops 2.0: one size, no dimensions, so the return is the fit
TYR's Special Ops 2.0 Polarized goggle costs $37.50 in Smoke/Black and is sold in one adult size, with DURAFIT silicone gaskets described but no gasket opening or nose-bridge width given on TYR's page. For a giver, that removes the sizing step: there is no measurement to take because there is nothing to apply it to. It also means a swimmer whose face runs narrow, or whose nose bridge runs wide, gets no figures to measure against, and neither does the person buying for them.
What TYR offers instead is a refund in the 30 days that follow the order, with $9.99 deducted from the refund when the prepaid label is used, so a $37.50 gamble on fit returns $27.51 if the goggle leaks. TYR's exchange route swaps an item only for another size of the same product, at a $9.99 handling fee, which has no meaning for a one-size goggle. The gift works the same way for every recipient: hand it over with the order number, and let the first swim be the fit test the maker did not publish.
When one measurement is not enough to buy on
Skip the sized items when the measurement lands in a maker's gap. A head between 53 and 57 cm sits in both of Bell's rows, a men's 10 sits in different Kahtoola bands depending on the boot, and a recipient near 5 ft 11 in has no Manduka guidance at all. In those cases the single number has stopped doing the work, and the giver is guessing with a return fee attached, which is the situation the method was meant to avoid.
Skip the approach entirely when the measurement cannot be had without asking, or when the recipient already owns the item in a size they chose. Traction, helmets and mats are things hobbyists size for themselves after a bad fit, and a gift that overrides that choice competes with a decision already made. The one-size goggle is the exception, since it asks nothing of the giver, but it also promises nothing about fit, and a swimmer with a history of leaking goggles is better given the order number and the choice than the goggle alone.
