humangear GoToob+ Review: The 2.5 oz Silicone Bottle With a Cap That Locks Shut

humangear's GoToob+ is the travel bottle to buy if the cap must lock: $11.99 for the 2.5 fl oz Medium, which clears the TSA 3.4 oz carry-on limit.

THE SHORT VERSION

humangear sells the GoToob+ in three carry-on sizes: Small at 1.7 fl oz and $9.99, Medium at 2.5 fl oz and $11.99, and Large at 3.4 fl oz and $13.99, with a 6 oz XL at $17.99 that the maker labels as not an approved size for TSA carry-on. The tube and valve are silicone, the cap and ID ring are #5 polypropylene, and the collar carries the LoopLock, a tab that pops out to hang the bottle or to lock the flip cap down. The Medium stays comfortably under the TSA carry-on limit.

A packed toiletry bag leaks for boring reasons: a cap that twists loose, a bottle squeezed flat under a shoe. The LoopLock handles the first, and flexible silicone handles the second better than a rigid bottle that cracks. Chemistry is the part humangear does not solve. Its own compatibility page lists fluids to avoid and notes that silicone is slightly permeable, so alcohol leaves slowly through the wall. Choosing among 1.7, 2.5 and 3.4 fl oz reflects how many days you are packing and whether you refill from a big bottle at home.

Our verdict

Buy the $11.99 Medium GoToob+ when you fly carry-on with shampoo or body wash: at 2.5 fl oz it stays under the TSA 3.4 oz limit, and the LoopLock collar locks the flip cap shut.

A good fit for
A carry-on traveler who decants shampoo or body wash into one bag and wants a cap that stays shut through a shuttle ride, a full suitcase or an inspector's repack.
We would skip it if
You pack salicylic acid, argan-oil hair serum, DEET or hydrogen peroxide, you need a fluid to sit for months, or your trip needs more than 3.4 oz in carry-on.

Reasons to consider it

  • The LoopLock tab on the collar both hangs the tube and locks the flip cap for transport, and replacing a cap costs $5 for three rather than being a reason to discard the bottle.
  • Capacities are 1.7, 2.5 and 3.4 fl oz at 45, 50 and 65 grams, all 1.9 inches deep, so the three carry-on sizes differ in volume rather than bulk.
  • The tube and collar are dishwasher safe on the upper rack, the materials are described as BPA-free, phthalate-free and FDA food-safe, and coverage is a lifetime warranty against defects for the original owner.

The compromises

  • humangear says the tubes won't leak under normal circumstances, then advises a sealed ziplock bag in transit, because a flip cap that was not pushed shut cannot be locked.
  • Silicone is slightly permeable, so alcohol leaves through the wall; humangear puts 70% hand sanitizer at roughly two to three weeks before its concentration drops, and lists salicylic acid, argan-oil serums, DEET and hydrogen peroxide as products to keep out.
  • The lifetime warranty is limited to defects in materials and workmanship for the original owner, with accident, improper use, negligence and everyday wear excluded; webstore refunds are available for 30 days on unused goods, and you pay return shipping.

What we have not verified: humangear's leak language is 'won't leak under normal circumstances', with nothing published on how that was tested, so how the silicone valve holds a thin liquid such as toner after repeated squeezing is unverified. The only CPSC record for the brand is a 2017 recall of the capCAP accessory cap (models HG0501, HG0502, HG0505, HG0505-DSG and HG0515) over leakage and a hot-drink burn hazard; the recall covers a different product line and says nothing about GoToob+, but it is the whole recall history. If the valve turns out fussy, a plain screw-cap bottle becomes the safer packing choice.

The things in this guide

A closer look at the products, who they may suit, and what to check before buying.

humangear GoToob+ · 2.5 oz
The carry-on bottle to buy at $11.99, because the Medium's cap locks shut

GoToob+ · 2.5 oz

The LoopLock collar holds the flip cap down for packing, the 2.5 oz Medium stays under the TSA 3.4 oz carry-on limit, and humangear lists the tube and valve as silicone, with a #5 polypropylene cap and BPA-free, FDA food-safe materials.

Before you buy: humangear still suggests a sealed ziplock bag in transit, the silicone is slightly permeable so alcohol slowly escapes, and the maker recommends against salicylic acid, argan-oil serums, DEET and hydrogen peroxide.

Every size, and where the 3.4 oz line falls

humangear publishes a complete measurement set. Small is 50 by 80 by 48 mm (2 by 3.15 by 1.9 inches) at 45 grams, Medium is 50.8 by 101.6 by 48 mm (2 by 4 by 1.9 inches) at 50 grams, Large is 57.15 by 114.3 by 48 mm (2.25 by 4.5 by 1.9 inches) at 65 grams, and the 6 oz XL is 63.5 by 133.35 by 44.45 mm (2.5 by 5.25 by 1.75 inches) at 85 grams. Twenty grams separate the smallest carry-on size from the largest, so the difference is volume, not weight.

The maker prints 'TSA-approved for carry-on travel' on the GoToob+ listing and 'not an approved size for TSA carry-on' on the XL. TSA does not certify bottles. Its published rule allows a quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes in carry-on, with each container at 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less, and sends anything larger to checked baggage. Small, Medium and Large sit at or under that line, the Large exactly on it; the 6 oz XL does not.

How the LoopLock and the valve behave

The LoopLock is a tab on the collar that pops out. In one position it hangs the tube from a hook; in the other it drops over the flip cap and holds it down, the feature behind humangear's 'only travel bottle with a locking cap' line. The cap still has to be pushed shut before the tab will close on it, and a cap left ajar cannot be locked. humangear's own packing advice is to put the tubes in a sealed ziplock bag anyway.

The cap holds a silicone valve, built to pass thick lotion and thin soap alike. humangear's instruction for a small dose of a thin fluid is to squeeze quickly: the longer the squeeze, the longer the valve stays open, so a slow squeeze dispenses more. Cleaning splits by part. The tube and collar go on the upper rack of a dishwasher; the flip cap is hand-wash only in warm, soapy water. Replacement flip caps are available on their own, and GoToob+ caps do not fit the original GoToob.

Fluids silicone accepts, and the ones it does not

The tube and valve are silicone, the cap and ID ring are #5 polypropylene, and humangear describes the line as BPA-free, phthalate-free and FDA food-safe. Silicone is inert against most of a toiletry kit; the exceptions matter more. humangear recommends against salicylic acid (common in acne treatments), hair serums and shine shampoos including argan-oil products, silicone-based lubricants, DEET-based repellents, hydrogen peroxide and sterile products such as contact lens solution. Alcohols sit in a middle group: usable, but slowly evaporating through the wall.

Sunscreen, tanning lotion, essential oils, castile soap and almond butter land in a test-first group, where humangear says problems have been reported in some cases and suggests an overnight trial before travel. Alcohol is the sharpest limit. humangear puts 70% hand sanitizer at roughly two to three weeks before the alcohol concentration drops below 60%, and frames these as travel bottles rather than long-term storage; a fluid left for months can dry out or thicken, and adding a little water revives some products.

The only humangear entry in the CPSC recall database is not a GoToob. On 30 March 2017 the agency announced a recall of the capCAP accessory bottle cap, model numbers HG0501, HG0502, HG0505, HG0505-DSG and HG0515, after one report of liquid leakage; a leaking capCAP on a hot drink posed a burn hazard. About 61,000 units were affected. That covers a different product line, so it is not evidence about GoToob+ performance, but it is the whole of the brand's recall record.

Cost from a single bottle to a multi-pack

Singles list at $9.99 for Small, $11.99 for Medium and $13.99 for Large; the 6 oz XL is $17.99. humangear also sells three-packs at $23.99 for three Small bottles, $28.99 for three Medium and $33.99 for three Large, which works out to $8.00, $9.66 and $11.33 a bottle. The pack saves roughly $2 to $3 a bottle over singles, in fixed color combinations. Nothing else in the kit needs a subscription: the only recurring cost is a replacement cap.

Replacement flip caps cost $5.00 in a pack of three, or $6.00 in a pack of six, in a GoToob+ style of their own; tubes and collars are not included. The warranty is a lifetime one for the original owner, covering defects in materials and workmanship. It excludes accident, improper care, improper use, negligence and everyday wear and tear, and repair or replacement is humangear's choice, with a similar product substituted if the model is gone. Webstore refunds last 30 days on unused goods in their original packaging; you pay return shipping.

When to skip it

Skip the GoToob+ if the fluid is on the avoid list. Salicylic acid, argan-oil serums, DEET and hydrogen peroxide are humangear's no-gos, and a drugstore bottle holds those just as well. Skip it if the contents will sit for months, since the page frames these as travel bottles; a rigid screw-cap bottle stores better. And if the trip needs more than 3.4 oz of anything, that bottle belongs in checked baggage rather than at the checkpoint.

The 6 oz XL at $17.99 is the answer for checked luggage and car trips, but humangear says outright that the XL is not an approved carry-on size, so it will not clear the checkpoint bag. A traveler who needs only a weekend's worth can drop to the 1.7 oz Small at $9.99 and refill from a larger bottle at home. What you pay for is the locking collar and the give of silicone; a plain squeeze bottle still leaves the cap to friction, and the quart bag has to contain it regardless.
