IKEA DINERA Mug Review: The Last Piece of a Series, and Still Four Dollars

A 10-ounce matte stoneware mug at $4.00, microwave- and dishwasher-safe, in dark gray or beige. The DINERA plates and sets have left the US range, so the mug now pairs with other IKEA dinnerware or with whatever you already own.

THE SHORT VERSION

Most four-dollar mugs come from a bin with no name. The DINERA mug comes with an article number, a materials line, two care ratings and a page of customer reviews, which is a different proposition even when the object is the same shape. IKEA describes the series as matte-glazed stoneware in muted colors with a rustic feel, and the mug is 10 ounces, 3 1/2 inches tall, and available in dark gray or beige.

What the page does not say is as useful as what it does. There is no country of manufacture, no weight for the mug itself, and no mention of the DINERA plates that gave the series its name, because IKEA's US site does not list them. Anyone buying the mug to build a matching table should know that ahead of the first order of two.

Our verdict

A plain, heavy-walled everyday mug at a price where breaking one is a shrug. IKEA's page covers the essentials, stoneware, microwave-safe, dishwasher-safe, 10 ounces, and leaves out the rest, including where it is made. Buy it as a mug, not as the start of a coordinated table, because no DINERA plate is on the US site.

A good fit for
A home that needs six or eight identical coffee mugs that survive the dishwasher, look the same on the shelf, and cost less to replace than to worry about.
We would skip it if
You want a mug that matches DINERA plates or bowls bought in the US, you prefer a thin-walled cup, or you need a large handle; one reviewer on IKEA's own page returned it for the two-finger grip.

Reasons to consider it

  • Stoneware with a colored glaze, rated microwave-safe and dishwasher-safe on IKEA's page, at $4.00 each
  • A 10-ounce capacity and 3 1/2-inch height that fits a standard coffee maker and most cupboard shelves
  • IKEA's 365-day return policy covers it, and a beige variant sells at the same price under article 603.506.46

The compromises

  • Online orders require a minimum of two, and IKEA lists no country of manufacture
  • The DINERA plates, bowls and the 18-piece set are absent from IKEA's US search and its plate and dinnerware-set categories, so the series cannot be completed there
  • IKEA publishes packaged weight only, 11 ounces, so the mug's own weight and wall thickness are unpublished

What we have not verified: We have not handled this mug, measured how hot its walls get in a microwave, or compared units for glaze consistency. IKEA's page does not state a country of origin, and a customer review on the page claims production moved between countries with a small change in proportions; we could not verify either claim. The 4.7-star figure on the page pools 1,172 reviews from several countries, not US buyers alone.

IKEA DINERA mug, 10 oz
Buy a stack for daily coffee, not to build a table setting

DINERA mug, 10 oz

At $4.00 each with dishwasher and microwave ratings printed on the page, six of these cost less than one mug from a pottery shop and can be replaced one at a time for years, as long as IKEA keeps the article number alive.

Before you buy: Online orders start at two, the handle is sized for two fingers according to one returner's review, and the plates and bowls that matched it are gone from the US range, so the closest matte dark gray plate is now FÄRGKLAR at $3.99.

Stoneware, a colored glaze, and two care ratings

IKEA lists the material as stoneware with a colored glaze and rates the mug microwave-safe and dishwasher-safe, with one instruction in the care notes: wash it ahead of first use. The series blurb describes matte-glazed stoneware in simple shapes and muted colors, and the mug follows that: a straight cylinder with a D-shaped handle, 3 1/2 inches tall, holding 10 ounces. Both colors, dark gray under 303.628.20 and beige under 603.506.46, cost $4.00.

Stoneware is fired hotter and denser than earthenware, which is why IKEA can rate a four-dollar mug for the dishwasher without a caveat, and the matte finish hides the small scuffs that a glossy glaze shows after a year of stacking. The one figure the page withholds is the mug's own weight; the 11 ounces listed is the packaged figure, and a reviewer on the page describes the current version as a little thicker than earlier batches.

Ten ounces is a coffee-maker cup, not a latte bowl

A 10-ounce capacity is a standard drip-machine serving with a little room for milk, and one reviewer on IKEA's page says exactly that: a full pour plus a splash fits, more spills. At 3 1/2 inches tall the mug sits under most single-serve brewers and stacks two high on a cupboard shelf, which is about as far as a straight stoneware mug should be stacked without chipping the rim.

The handle is the part the reviews argue about. Several call the mug comfortable to hold, while one buyer returned it because the handle takes two fingers and the body is heavy enough to want three. Neither claim is measurable from the page, which gives no handle dimension, so a buyer with large hands has one data point against and a page of five-star reviews for, and should treat the return policy as the tiebreaker.

The plates that matched it are gone from the US site

The DINERA name belonged to a full dinnerware series, and IKEA's series blurb still invites buyers to mix and match its parts. On the US site, a search for DINERA returns only the two mugs, and neither the plates category nor the dinnerware-sets category lists a DINERA item. No 18-piece DINERA set appears on the US site with a price, and we found no DINERA plate at any US article number.

For a person after the mug to match a plate, the closest current option in IKEA's US range is the FÄRGKLAR plate in matte dark gray, a stoneware piece with a colored glaze at $3.99 with an online minimum of four. One DINERA reviewer describes pairing the dark gray mug with that dinnerware. The finishes are described in similar terms on both pages, but IKEA makes no claim that they are the same glaze, and we cannot confirm a match without seeing them side by side.

No country of origin, no glaze note, and a pooled star rating

IKEA's US page for the mug carries no country of manufacture. A long customer review claims early units were made in Thailand and later ones in China with slightly larger proportions; we could not verify the claim from IKEA, and the page has no line about small variations in glaze or shape of the kind IKEA prints on some other ceramics. Treat the reviewer's account as one owner's observation.

The 4.7-star average over 1,172 reviews is pooled across IKEA's markets, and the visible sample includes reviewers in Australia, Canada and the Netherlands, so it describes the mug in general, not the US stock in particular. The price and the return terms on the page are the parts that apply to a US buyer: $4.00 per mug, a minimum online order of two, and IKEA's 365-day return policy for a full refund, subject to the conditions its asterisk points to.

When to skip it

Skip it if the plan was a matched DINERA table, because the plates and bowls are no longer sold on IKEA's US site and the mug alone cannot rebuild the set. Skip it if you drink from thin porcelain by preference; it is a thick stoneware cylinder and the page and the reviews both say so. And skip it if a small handle is a deal-breaker, since the one negative review on the page is about exactly that.

For everyone else it is four dollars for a mug with a materials line, two care ratings and a year-long return policy, which is more documentation than most mugs at twice the price offer. Buy in multiples, since the online minimum is two anyway, and pair it with FÄRGKLAR at $3.99 a plate if a matte gray table is the goal.
