IKEA LAGAN Dishwasher Review: The $399 Price Stops At The Cabinet Opening

IKEA's cheapest dishwasher lists at $399.00 with 12 place settings, five programs and a 54 dB(A) rating. It ships without a cord or plug, a qualified installer must fit it, and IKEA prints its coverage two ways: five years, or two.

THE SHORT VERSION

IKEA lists five built-in dishwashers on its US site. The LAGAN, article number 005.876.23, is the cheapest at $399.00, two hundred dollars under the FLÅBODA and three hundred under the RANSBERG and VINTROSA. It is a white 24 inch unit with 12 place settings, five programs and an ENERGY STAR label, described by IKEA as a reliable dishwasher with the basic functions needed to get the job done.

A $399 dishwasher invites a simple question: what did IKEA leave out to reach that number? The answer is partly in the specification, with a 54 dB(A) noise rating and no third rack, and partly in the box, which ships without a power cord or plug and with an instruction that a qualified installer do the fitting. This review goes through the programs and water figures in IKEA's manual, the measurements, the coverage term that IKEA's documents state two different ways, and the costs that sit outside the price tag.

Our verdict

A plain $399.00 24 inch built-in: 12 place settings, five programs, NSF/ANSI 184 sanitize, coverage printed as five years or two. Loud at 54 dB(A), its delay timer tops out at 9 hours, and cord, plug and installer cost extra.

A good fit for
A rental unit, a first kitchen or a SEKTION remodel where the dishwasher sits behind a door that closes, the household runs it after the kitchen empties, and the budget for the appliance itself is under $500 before installation.
We would skip it if
The kitchen opens onto the living room and 54 dB(A) will be heard over a conversation, you want a stainless interior or a third rack, or you have not priced a cord kit and an installer, which together can add a meaningful fraction of the $399 price.

Reasons to consider it

  • Limited coverage that pays for factory specified parts and in-home repair labor, for five years under the manual and the limited warranties page or two under the kitchen warranty brochure
  • ENERGY STAR certified at 240 kWh per year and 3.2 gal (12.3 L) per ESTAR declaration, with a Quick program the manual rates at 4.1 gal and 60 minutes
  • Sanitize option certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 184, a water-stop leak sensor, a height-adjustable upper basket and a door that IKEA says opens itself at the end of the cycle to speed drying

The compromises

  • 54 dB(A) is audible from the next room; IKEA's next model up, FLÅBODA at $599, is rated at 49 dB(A) but is panel-ready with the door sold separately
  • Cable and plug are not included and IKEA states installation is to be carried out by a qualified installer, so the $399.00 figure is the appliance alone
  • IKEA's page advertises a delayed start of up to 24 hours while the manual describes a Delay button with 3, 6 or 9 hour choices, and the same page carries both a 5 year limited warranty in its features box and a 2-year warranty in its description

What we have not verified: We have not run this dishwasher, measured its noise, or checked how the racks fit real plates. IKEA's page shows 14 customer reviews averaging 3.4 stars, and the review displayed there claims the 2025 version has smaller racks than the 2021 one. Program durations in the manual are approximate and depend on incoming water temperature. Which coverage term applies to a LAGAN dishwasher bought now is unresolved in IKEA's own documents: the manual and the limited warranties page give five years, while the kitchen warranty brochure gives LAGAN two years with no purchase date attached, and no page says which text a claim is judged under, so the shorter term is the one to budget against.

LAGAN Built-in Dishwasher, White, 24 in (005.876.23)

12 place settings, Heavy, Normal, Delicate, Quick and Rinse programs, an NSF-certified sanitize option, a leak sensor and in-home repair coverage of five years or two, depending on which IKEA document governs, at $399.00 in a standard 24 inch opening.

Before you buy: 54 dB(A) is a noisy rating, the manual's delay timer tops out at 9 hours, and the cord, plug and qualified installer add to the price before the first cycle runs.

Five programs, and the Quick one is the outlier

The manual lists Heavy, Normal, Delicate, Quick and Rinse. Heavy runs a pre-wash, a 140 F wash and a 149 F rinse over about 151 minutes using 7.1 gallons. Normal is sensor-driven, washing between 107 and 140 F and taking 108 to 146 minutes on 3.0 to 7.0 gallons, and it is the program the manual flags as the most efficient for ordinary loads. Delicate holds the wash at 122 F for stemware over 118 minutes and 7.0 gallons.

Quick is the program that changes how the machine gets used: 55 C wash, two rinses, 60 minutes and 4.1 gallons for pre-rinsed loads. Rinse is 20 minutes and 2.0 gallons with no detergent, for holding a half load until it fills. Heated Dry and Sanitize can be added to the four washing programs; Sanitize holds the water at up to 156.2 F and is certified under NSF/ANSI Standard 184. The ENERGY STAR declaration on the page works out to 3.2 gallons (12.3 L) per cycle and 240 kWh a year.

54 dB(A), and a timer that is 9 hours in the manual and 24 on the page

IKEA states the noise level as 54 dB(A) in the Good to know section and gives no other acoustic figure. The next model up, FLÅBODA at $599, is rated at 49 dB(A) on its own page, a 5 dB gap that is clearly audible, so the LAGAN will be heard through an open doorway, and the manual's advice to keep sink drain plugs closed during a cycle is there to stop sound carrying through the plumbing. FLÅBODA is panel-ready, though, and IKEA sells its door, plinth and handles separately, so the $200 step is a floor.

IKEA's page promises a delayed start of up to 24 hours. The manual's control table describes a Delay button that begins the cycle 3, 6 or 9 hours later, and nothing in the operating instructions extends that. We treat the manual as the closer description of the buttons on the panel. The page also says the door opens on its own toward the end of the program so dishes dry faster; the manual only advises leaving the door ajar for a few minutes before unloading, and does not describe an automatic opener.

A standard 24 inch opening, no cord, and an installer on your side of the ledger

The unit measures 23 5/8 inches wide, 22 5/8 deep and 33 5/8 tall, with adjustable feet for an installation height of 34 1/2 to 35 3/8 inches, and it weighs 82 lb unboxed and 96 lb 2 oz in its 26 1/2 x 26 1/4 x 35 1/4 inch carton. The manual's own table rounds the body to 600 x 576 x 855 mm. The upper basket adjusts by 2 inches and takes plates up to 10 inches across; the lower basket takes 12 inch plates.

IKEA's Good to know text reads, in full, "Cable and plug not included. Installation to be carried out by a qualified installer." The manual specifies a grounded 120 V, 60 Hz circuit with a 15 ampere breaker, or 20 amperes if a food disposer shares it, a rated current of 7.84 A and a water supply between 20 and 80 psi. A power cord kit, a water line, a drain connection and the installer's time all sit outside the $399.00, and a buyer replacing an older unit should add them up before the total looks cheap.

Two terms in IKEA's own documents, and none saying which one governs

IKEA's US pages give a five-year answer twice. The limited warranties page puts major appliances under a limited warranty paying for factory specified parts and repair labor against defects in material or workmanship, with the appliance meant to be repaired in the home, and names only TILLREDA as a two-year exception; LAGAN does not appear on that page at all. The manual for this dishwasher says the same at its page 26, five years from the original date of purchase, and adds one condition: LAGAN appliances bought before May 1, 2026 are covered for two years from that purchase date instead.

The listing carries both answers at once: its features box lists a 5 year limited warranty, while its description reads 2-year warranty and points at a warranty brochure the listing never links. The brochure that the limited warranties page does link gives LAGAN and TILLREDA appliances two years with no purchase-date condition. It says so on its summary page, twice in its Appliances section and again in its implied-warranty clause. Not one of these documents says which text a claim is judged under, so which term IKEA applies to article 005.876.23 is worth asking before the first cycle.

When $399 is the wrong number to optimize

Skip it if noise matters. At 54 dB(A) this is a dishwasher for a kitchen with a door, or for a household that runs it overnight, and the manual's 9 hour delay ceiling makes a bedtime start the practical routine. The $200 step to FLÅBODA buys a 49 dB(A) rating and a panel-ready front that needs its own door, and the VINTROSA at $699 comes with a stainless steel front for a kitchen where the machine will show.

Leave it too if the installation budget is thin. The appliance is $399.00, but the cord kit, the plumbing parts and a qualified installer are all outside that, and the warranty excludes service calls that turn out to be installation faults. Where the LAGAN makes sense is a rental, a first kitchen or a SEKTION build with a panel-free white front, where the limited warranties page's five-year answer and the 365 day return policy carry more weight than a quieter motor, provided the brochure's two-year line has been asked about first.
