IKEA SMÅSPORRE Comforter Review: Pick the Weight by Your Bedroom, Not the Price Gap

IKEA lists the Full/Queen SMÅSPORRE in a 4 TOG light warm version for $44.99 and a 7.5 TOG warm version for $54.99, with the same shell, the same fill and the same wash label. The ten dollars is the least important difference between them.

THE SHORT VERSION

IKEA lists the SMÅSPORRE duvet insert in light warm, Full/Queen, at $44.99 under article number 804.570.19, and the page carries a top-seller label with 1,543 reviews averaging 4.5 out of 5. The shell is 65% polyester from recycled sources and 35% cotton, the fill is 100% recycled hollow-fiber polyester, and IKEA rates the warmth at 4 TOG. A warm version with the same construction and a 7.5 TOG rating sits beside it at $54.99, and the two can also be bought joined as a $99.99 all-seasons set.

This review uses only what IKEA publishes on those pages: materials, measurements, the care label, the care notes, packaging data, and the customer reviews shown there. Nothing here reflects a night under the comforter or a trip through a washing machine. Where the numbers point one way and the customer comments point another, both are reported so the choice between the two weights, and between this line and a cotton-shell comforter, can be made from evidence.

Our verdict

A $44.99 synthetic comforter whose strongest argument is the care label: a 140°F machine wash and a medium tumble dry, which IKEA says is hot enough to kill dust mites. The 4 TOG light warm rating suits a heated bedroom or a warm sleeper; a cold bedroom needs the 7.5 TOG warm version at $54.99 instead.

A good fit for
Warm sleepers, air-conditioned or well-heated bedrooms, allergy households that want to wash the comforter itself at high heat, and guest or rental beds where frequent laundering matters more than loft.
We would skip it if
You sleep cold in an unheated room, you want a down or down-alternative comforter with visible loft, you need corner loops to tie into a duvet cover, or your cover is a US-brand King, which IKEA's 86 x 86 in Full/Queen will not fill.

Reasons to consider it

  • Care label allows a 140°F/60°C machine wash and a medium tumble dry, with IKEA stating that temperature kills dust mites
  • The polyester in both the shell and the fill is listed as 100% recycled, with a published 186 thread count and a published 4 TOG rating
  • IKEA publishes the filling weight (25 oz) and total weight (60 oz), so the light warm and warm versions can be compared by numbers instead of adjectives

The compromises

  • Shell is 65% polyester and 35% cotton, and one IKEA reviewer describes it as feeling like slick polyester; no cotton-shell option exists in this line
  • No corner loops or ties are listed, and IKEA reviewers on two SMÅSPORRE pages complain about having nothing to anchor a duvet cover to
  • The 86 x 86 in Full/Queen size is IKEA's own cut; reviewers report it running short inside King covers from other brands

What we have not verified: Every figure is taken from IKEA's US product pages, not from sleeping under or washing the comforter. IKEA's page does not state any OEKO-TEX or similar textile certification for this item, and no explicit sentence recommending a duvet cover was found, although IKEA names the product a duvet insert throughout. The 1,543 reviews shown on the Full/Queen page include comments about King sizing, which suggests IKEA pools reviews across sizes; the split by size is unknown.

The things in this guide

A closer look at the products, who they may suit, and what to check before buying.

IKEA SMÅSPORRE Comforter, light warm, Full/Queen (804.570.19)
Buy the light warm Full/Queen for a heated room or a warm sleeper

SMÅSPORRE Comforter, light warm, Full/Queen (804.570.19)

At $44.99 it delivers a washable, dryable comforter with published weights and a published TOG rating, and the 140°F wash temperature is a practical advantage for anyone managing dust-mite allergies. IKEA's own advice text calls it a good choice for people who often feel warm while sleeping.

Before you buy: 4 TOG is a light rating; several IKEA reviewers who bought it as a winter comforter found it too thin, and IKEA offers the 7.5 TOG warm version for exactly that use. The polyester-heavy shell and the absence of corner loops are fixed features of the whole line.

Two weights, one shell: what $44.99 and $54.99 buy

IKEA builds the light warm and warm SMÅSPORRE from identical materials and changes only the amount of fill. The light warm Full/Queen carries 25 oz of hollow-fiber polyester for a total weight of 60 oz and a 4 TOG rating; the warm version carries 47 oz of fill, weighs 82 oz in total, and is rated 7.5 TOG. Both measure 86 x 86 in, both use the 186 thread count shell, and both share the same wash label. The all-seasons version is simply the two comforters sold together with a way to join them, priced at $99.99, which is exactly the sum of the two singles.

The choice between them comes down to the room. IKEA's advice text on the light warm page says it suits people who often feel warm while sleeping, and the warm page says the opposite. Reviews on the light warm page split along that line: buyers in Los Angeles and San Diego call the weight ideal, while one New England buyer found it too warm for anything but winter and another buyer describes it as thin as paper. A cold bedroom is a $54.99 purchase, and there is no version between the two.

A 65/35 polyester-cotton shell over recycled hollow fiber

The shell is 65% polyester from recycled sources and 35% cotton, woven at 186 threads per square inch, and IKEA's care notes explain the count as a density figure. The fill is 100% recycled hollow-fiber polyester, and IKEA's description says the light fibers keep their volume and insulation ability. A polyester-dominant shell is what makes the aggressive wash label possible, but it also sets the hand of the fabric: the fabric is not a cotton percale envelope.

Customer comments make that concrete. One one-star review calls the fabric slick polyester and predicts static and pet hair, while several five-star reviews call it fluffy and soft and one buyer used it without a cover at all and found it comfortable against skin. IKEA lists no OEKO-TEX or similar certification for the item; the compliance section shows only a Law Label notice and flammability test statements to EN ISO 12952-1 and CAN/CGSB 4.2 No 27.5. If a certified low-chemical textile is a requirement, this page gives nothing to point to.

The care label is the reason to buy it

IKEA's care label reads: machine wash warm at a maximum of 140°F/60°C on a normal cycle, do not bleach, tumble dry medium on a normal cycle, do not iron, do not dry clean. The advice text adds that 140°F is a temperature that kills dust mites, and the care notes say the design and material are optimized for frequent use and washing to the point that IKEA rates it suitable for smaller hotels, inns and B&Bs. For an allergy household, a comforter that goes through a hot home wash and a dryer is worth more than a marginally softer shell that has to be dry cleaned.

The washing story has a counterpoint on the warm version's page, where two reviewers report the fill clumping and the comforter deforming after washing, one of them despite dryer balls and following the label. The light warm page shows no equivalent complaint in the reviews retrieved, but with the same fill and shell there is no reason to expect the two to behave differently in a machine. A reasonable reading is that the label describes what the comforter tolerates, not a promise that the fill will redistribute itself evenly every wash.

86 by 86 inches is IKEA's Full/Queen, and covers know the difference

IKEA's Full/Queen is a square 86 x 86 in; the Twin is 64 x 86 in at $39.99 and the King is 102 x 86 in at $54.99. Those are IKEA's own bedding dimensions and they line up with IKEA duvet covers, which two reviewers confirm by reporting a perfect fit inside an IKEA cover. Measured against a typical US Queen cover, the 86 in width is generous, but the 86 in length is about what a US Queen cover expects, so the insert should fill a Queen cover without drooping.

Problems start with covers from other brands. One reviewer bought the insert for a King cover from another retailer and found more than 12 in of empty space along one side; another reports it 2 to 3 in short in width against a King cover. Two separate reviewers, on the light warm and warm pages, also complain that the insert has no corner loops to tie a cover to, and one says she will sew elastic on herself. IKEA lists no loops or ties in the product details, so plan on clips or stitching if your cover has interior ties.

1,543 reviews at 4.5 stars, and what the low ones have in common

IKEA shows a 4.5 out of 5 average across 1,543 reviews for the light warm Full/Queen page, with sub-scores of 4.6 for value for money, 4.5 for product quality and 4.5 for works as expected. The warm version averages 4.6 across 1,146 reviews. Both pages carry comments about King sizing, which suggests IKEA pools reviews across sizes for each warmth level, so the count on any one page is best read as a family score.

The one-star and two-star reviews cluster around three complaints: unsewn or unstitched seams on arrival, holes on arrival, and a thinner or slicker feel than the buyer expected. The first two are quality-control failures that IKEA's year-long return term covers, provided the item goes back unwashed and unused, since the returns text excludes merchandise that is dirty, stained or modified. The third is a matching problem between the 4 TOG rating and the buyer's climate, and it is avoidable by reading the TOG number before choosing.

When to skip the SMÅSPORRE comforter

Skip the light warm version if your bedroom is cold at night, because 4 TOG is a spring and summer rating by IKEA's own scale and the 7.5 TOG warm version at $54.99 exists for winter. Skip the whole line if you want a natural fill or a cotton shell, because every SMÅSPORRE size and weight uses the same 65% polyester blend over polyester fiber, and if the absence of corner loops will bother you whenever the cover shifts.

Set it aside as well if your duvet cover is a US-brand King or a non-IKEA Queen with different proportions, since the 86 x 86 in cut will leave slack that several reviewers found annoying. Buyers who can accept a synthetic hand and who value a hot wash more than loft get a comforter with published weights, a published warmth rating, a full year to return it and a price that undercuts most washable alternatives; that is the case for it, and it is a narrower case than the review count implies.
