The SuperBreak is the JanSport most people can draw from memory: one big zippered compartment, one front pocket, two padded straps, a woven label. The SuperBreak Plus keeps that outline and adds a padded laptop sleeve inside and a bottle pocket on the side. JanSport lists the solid Black colorway (style JS0A4QUE) at $45 in the US, with prints and embroidered versions of the same pack at $45 and $55.
The additions matter more than they sound. A school pack in 2026 carries a Chromebook or a laptop nearly every day, and the original SuperBreak had nowhere to put one except loose among the binders. The question for a parent is whether a soft, frameless bag with a sleeve is enough, or whether the child's load has grown into something that needs a bigger, stiffer pack like JanSport's own Big Student.
Our verdict
A $45 one-compartment school pack that adds the two things students actually asked for, a laptop sleeve and a bottle pocket, without adding structure or much weight; buy it for a middle or high schooler with a laptop and a normal load of books.
- A good fit for
- A student from about middle school up who carries a Chromebook or a 13- to 15-inch laptop, a water bottle and a few binders, and whose family would like the bag to outlast the school year.
- We would skip it if
- The child is in early elementary and the 16.5-inch height will hang below their hips, or the daily load is big enough to call for a hip belt, a sternum strap or a stiff frame.
Reasons to consider it
- Padded internal sleeve sized 16 by 12.5 inches for a 15-inch laptop, inside a 26 L compartment at 14 oz total weight
- Side bottle pocket and a front zip pocket with a built-in organizer, on a body of 100% recycled 600-denier polyester
- Lifetime coverage for manufacturing defects backed by a repair-first claim process, plus free returns for 30 days
The compromises
- One main compartment with no divider, so books, lunch and a laptop share the same space and settle against the sleeve
- No sternum strap, hip belt or frame; the padded back panel and straight-cut straps are the whole suspension
- The Black solid is $45 but embroidered prints run $55, and JanSport says the liner color is changing mid-run
What we have not verified: The pack was not loaded or worn here. Zipper life under a school year of daily use, how the 600-denier shell resists rain, and whether the sleeve padding is enough for a laptop dropped in a hallway were not assessed.

SuperBreak Plus Backpack, 26 L, Black
A 26 L compartment with a padded sleeve for a 15-inch laptop, a bottle pocket, a front organizer pocket and a padded back panel, in a 14-ounce pack that JanSport will repair for life if it fails through a manufacturing defect.
Before you buy: No divider inside the main compartment, no sternum strap or hip belt, and the pack was not carried or loaded for this review.

JanSport's own description is a single sentence: the Plus is the classic SuperBreak with an internal laptop sleeve and a side water bottle pocket. The feature list fills that out. The sleeve is padded and sized for a 15-inch laptop, with a stated laptop area of 16 by 12.5 inches, and it sits against the padded back panel inside the main compartment. The front pocket has a built-in organizer for pens and small items, the top has a webbing grab handle, and the zipper pulls carry cord tabs so a child can find them with gloves on.
Capacity is 1587 cubic inches, or 26 liters, in a body measuring 16.5 by 12.5 by 5.5 inches. Weight is 14 ounces, which is the number that separates this from bigger student packs: it is a bag that disappears when empty. The main compartment has no divider, so a laptop in the sleeve shares the space with binders, lunch and whatever else went in, and the bottle pocket is the only pocket outside the two zippers.
Recycled 600-denier polyester, washed by hand
The main body fabric on solid and printed colorways is 100% recycled 600-denier polyester, which JanSport pairs with the claim that 600-denier construction means the bag is built to last. The spec line also notes that the SuperBreak Plus family as a whole uses a variety of fabrics, so an embroidered or specialty version may differ from the Black solid reviewed here. JanSport does not state a water-resistance rating for the shell or the zippers, and nothing on the page suggests a rain cover.
Care is simple and restrictive. JanSport's FAQ page directs owners to wash the pack by hand or spot clean it, then air or line dry, with no detergent and no bleach; a washing machine is not an option the brand endorses. One more note on the Black colorway: JanSport flags that internal liner colors may vary during a transition to a darker liner, so two identical packs bought a few weeks apart may not match inside.
Repair first, replace if needed, for the life of the pack
JanSport's warranty covers its packs, bags, pouches, totes and cases for the lifetime of the product against manufacturing faults, and the stated remedy is repair without charge, or replacement at the brand's discretion. Excluded are accidents, improper care, negligence, ordinary wear, and the fading of colors and materials over long use. Only unmodified items are covered, and the claim form asks for photographs of the damage and of the internal tag showing the style number; JanSport says the process can take four to six weeks, and that an item sent in dirty will come back uncleaned and unrepaired.
Returns are separate and shorter. Unused, unaltered merchandise can go back for 30 days with the prepaid FedEx label in the box, refunded to the original payment method minus the original shipping charge; exchanges are not offered and clearance items are final. For a school bag bought in August and used in September, the practical protection is the warranty, and its usefulness depends on whether a broken zipper in October reads as a defect or as wear.
$45 against the $62 Big Student
At $45 the Black SuperBreak Plus is priced under the embroidered versions of itself ($55) and well under JanSport's Big Student, which lists at $62 in Black. The Big Student is the comparison worth making because it is the pack a parent buys when the SuperBreak stops being enough: 34 liters against 26, a body of 17 by 13 by 7.5 inches, and a weight of 1 pound 7 ounces, with ergonomic S-curve straps and a zipped sleeve for a 15.5-inch laptop.
The extra $17 buys eight liters, two inches of depth and better straps, at a cost of roughly nine extra ounces on the child's back before anything goes in. For a student whose daily load is a laptop, two binders and a bottle, the SuperBreak Plus is the lighter and cheaper answer. For a load of four textbooks and a lunch bag, the smaller pack will be full every morning and the money saved will be spent on a replacement a year sooner.
Skip it for small children and heavy loads
The SuperBreak Plus is a teenager's bag in proportion. A pack 16.5 inches high will sit low on a second grader, and a 26-liter compartment with a laptop sleeve is more bag than a child that age carries. JanSport tags the pack for middle school, high school and campus use, and that reads correctly; younger children are better served by a smaller pack with a chest clip.
It is also the wrong bag for weight. There is no sternum strap, no hip belt and no frame, so a load of textbooks hangs from two padded straps and a padded panel, with no help from a frame. If the school day involves a full set of books, or a long walk with the pack loaded, step up to a pack with real suspension. Buy the SuperBreak Plus for a light daily load and a laptop, and for a warranty that has been the same promise since 1967.
