Manta PRO Sleep Mask Review: Worth It For Side Sleepers, Overkill For Everyone Else

Manta charges $85 for the PRO against $39 for its ORIGINAL. The extra money buys cups that flatten against a pillow, a strap that clears the ears, and cooling fabrics, so the case for it rests on how you sleep.

THE SHORT VERSION

Manta sells two masks built on the same idea: eye cups that move along a strap so the seal lands where your face needs it. The ORIGINAL does this for $39. The PRO does it for $85, and every extra dollar is aimed at one sleeper type. Manta's own description calls it engineered for side sleepers, and its comparison table against the ORIGINAL lists five differences: cooling fabrics, ventilation, a strap that rides above the ears, C-shaped cups, and an anti-slip gel.

So the question for a buyer is narrow. If you sleep on your side and a cupped mask has ever dug into your temple or pushed the strap over your ear, the PRO is Manta's answer to that. If you sleep on your back, the cheaper mask delivers the same blackout promise with a simpler strap, and the PRO becomes an expensive way to buy fabric you may never notice.

Our verdict

Justifiable at $85 for a side sleeper who has already used a cupped mask and found the cups or strap in the way; a hard sell for back sleepers, who get most of the blackout from the $39 ORIGINAL.

A good fit for
Side sleepers who wake because a mask edge or strap presses into the pillow, and hot sleepers who want ventilated materials rather than plain fabric against the face.
We would skip it if
You sleep on your back, you have never tried a cupped mask and do not know whether the style suits you, or a $39 mask already keeps the room dark.

Reasons to consider it

  • C-shaped cups are tapered at the temples and described as compressing flat when you lie on your side
  • The angled strap sits above the ears and carries an anti-slip gel strip
  • Fully machine washable in a mesh bag, with a 60-day guarantee and a six-month defect exchange

The compromises

  • More than double the price of the ORIGINAL for the same 73 cm strap length and the same blackout claim
  • Replacement PRO cups cost $49 and a replacement strap $41, so worn parts are not cheap to swap
  • Comfort claims come from Manta's own copy and 1,907 store reviews, not from measurements

What we have not verified: The mask was not worn here. Whether the cups truly lie flat under a sleeper's head weight, how long the gel strip stays grippy after repeated washing, and whether the ventilation holes make a measurable temperature difference were not tested.

Manta PRO Sleep Mask
The mask to buy after the ORIGINAL disappoints a side sleeper

PRO Sleep Mask

Tapered cups with an expanding seal, a strap routed above the ears, and a gel strip address the specific complaints side sleepers have about cupped masks, and the whole thing goes through a washing machine.

Before you buy: At $85 it costs more than twice the ORIGINAL for the same strap length and blackout claim, and its comfort advantage is asserted by Manta, not measured here.

Five differences, all aimed at one sleeping position

Manta's comparison table is the clearest statement of what the PRO is. Against the ORIGINAL it lists cooling fabrics (yes versus no), advanced ventilation (yes versus no), a head strap that sits above the ears instead of on them, C-shaped eye cups instead of O-shaped ones, and an anti-slip gel the cheaper mask lacks. The blackout claim and the adjustable, repositionable cups are shared by both.

The cups carry the most weight. Manta says the PRO cups are tapered thin at the temples so almost no material sits between head and pillow, and that each cup has an 'air bubble' that expands to block light when you change position and compresses flat when you lie on your side. The ORIGINAL cups are Modal fabric with a listed 5.2 cm of eye space; the PRO page does not publish an equivalent figure, only the claim that eye space is not sacrificed.

Strap, fabric, and the 73 cm that did not change

The PRO strap is perforated foam and mesh, described as slim and light so air passes through it and little material lies under your head. It is angled to clear the ears, and a gel strip on the inside is meant to keep it from creeping during the night. The interior fabric is Tactel, which Manta describes as twice as soft, three times as durable, and eight times faster drying than most fabrics, all of which are the manufacturer's comparisons and not figures we can check.

One number stayed the same: the strap is 73 cm in circumference on both masks, and both are fully adjustable, so head size does not separate the two. What differs is what touches the skin. The ORIGINAL uses a polycotton outer and polyester velour inner on its strap; the PRO trades that for the ventilated foam and mesh. If the cheaper strap has ever left you sweaty, that swap is a concrete reason to upgrade, but it is not one you can confirm from a photo.

Washing is easy; replacing worn pieces is not cheap

Manta says the PRO is fully machine washable: cold water, mask and cups together inside the mesh laundry bag, then air dry flat. That is the same routine as the ORIGINAL and it is the kind of care that keeps a mask in use for years instead of months. The perforated foam in the strap and the gel strip are the components most likely to change with washing, and Manta does not say how many cycles they are rated for.

When something does wear out, the PRO's modular design lets you replace the piece, but the prices are steep relative to the mask. Replacement PRO eye cups are $49 and a replacement PRO strap is $41; the two together cost more than a new PRO at $85. In practice that means a worn strap on a two-year-old mask is close to a new-mask decision, and the modularity is more useful for mixing colors than for saving money.

Sixty days to return, six months on defects, one exchange

Every Manta ships with a 60-day guarantee. If the mask does not work for you, Manta's customer team emails a prepaid return label, and once the mask is back in good condition and in its original packaging you get a refund of the item price. Any shipping you paid on the order is not refunded, and standard US shipping is $7 on orders under $105, so a solo PRO purchase carries that small non-refundable cost.

Two other terms matter. Within the same 60 days you can ask for an exchange instead of a refund, but only once, only for an item of the same or lower price, with shipping paid by you, and choosing the exchange ends any refund eligibility. Separately, Manta offers a six-month window to swap a mask with a manufacturing defect for a new one of the same product. Neither term is unusual, but the one-exchange rule means a buyer unsure between PRO and ORIGINAL should decide before ordering, not after.

When the $39 mask is the right Manta

Back sleepers gain the least. Every PRO-specific change, from the tapered cups to the above-ear strap to the flattening air bubble, is about what happens when the side of your head meets a pillow. Lying face-up, the ORIGINAL's O-shaped cups and on-ear strap have nothing to press against, and the blackout claim is the same. Spending $46 more for cooling fabric alone is a thin reason.

The other group to hold off is anyone new to cupped masks. Manta's whole design is a fitting exercise, and some people never adjust to having rigid rings around their eyes at all. Learning that on a $39 mask costs less than learning it on an $85 one, and the ORIGINAL's 60-day guarantee covers the experiment. Buy the PRO once you know the cup style works and only the side-sleeping details are left to fix.
