OXO Salad Spinner Review: Worth the Space If You Actually Prepare Greens

The large white Good Grips spinner has a clear job. Whether it belongs in your kitchen depends on frequency, storage, and cleanup.

THE SHORT VERSION

Settle whether you want a salad spinner at all before choosing between models. Washing and drying leaves twice a week justifies a dedicated tool. Doing it twice a month means buying a large bowl with a gearbox in it and finding somewhere to keep it.

The white Good Grips model here was listed at $32.99, which is reasonable or wasteful depending entirely on frequency. The test is whether it is easy enough to pull out, use and wash that it stays in the rotation instead of living behind the mixing bowls.

Our verdict

Worth shortlisting for regular preparation of leafy greens; hard to justify for an occasional small garnish.

A good fit for
A household that frequently prepares enough greens to make a large bowl useful.
We would skip it if
Cupboard space is scarce, portions are very small, or you rarely need to dry washed leaves.

Reasons to consider it

  • The pump and brake give the task a defined start and stop
  • The removable basket can also serve as a colander

The compromises

  • A large footprint remains even when the bowl is empty
  • Bowl capacity is greater than the usable basket capacity

What we have not verified: Residual water after spinning, stability in use, pump force and long-term wear of the mechanism are all unmeasured.

For a regular greens routine

Good Grips Salad Spinner · White

Worth the cupboard space when drying leaves is a repeated task rather than an occasional one.

Before you buy: Measure the shelf and compare the 4.95 Qt basket with your usual portion. Drying performance is unverified here.

The empty bowl still takes up the same cupboard space

OXO lists a 6.22 Qt outer bowl, a 4.95 Qt basket and a 10.5 by 10.5 by 6 inch body. The basket is the number that matters, since that is where the leaves go. Neither figure promises that a full load of any given leaf comes out dry.

Measure the shelf, then the cupboard opening. Then imagine fetching it with the counter already covered in dinner. A tool that needs two other things moved first gets skipped precisely when it would have helped.

A pump can be appealing without proving effortless use

The published design has a pump knob, a brake button, a non-slip base and a basket that lifts out, with a lid that comes apart for washing. A sensible list. How much force the pump takes, and whether the bowl walks across a slick counter, are open questions.

If ease of use is the reason for buying, try the mechanism in a shop. Pumping, steadying the bowl and lifting out a wet basket are three different movements, and a control that suits one pair of hands can defeat another. No product page answers that.

Evaluate the entire preparation task

A spinner dries leaves. It does not portion them, inspect them, or get the rest of dinner moving. Compare the whole sequence you run now against the same sequence with one more object in it, washing-up included.

A fair trial uses an ordinary portion and counts the cycles and the cleanup. The outcome that matters is whether the task gets easier to repeat. That trial was not run here, so no dryness advantage is claimed over a tea towel or a rival spinner.

Choose the smaller commitment if your habit is still uncertain

The manufacturer marks this model dishwasher safe. That helps only if it fits the way you load and clean your kitchen tools. Allow room to dry the separated components before putting them away; a nested object can still occupy several spaces during cleanup.

Shortlist the large OXO when salad is already a regular part of dinner and there is a reachable place to keep it. For small portions or a habit still forming, count the occasions first. Equipment rarely creates a cooking routine on its own.
