Regalo Easy Step Gate Review: The Doorway Gate With A Three-Inch Blind Spot

A pressure-mounted steel gate that stands 30 inches high, fits 29 to 38.5 inch openings and swings a 16-inch door. The catch is the 32 to 35 inch range it cannot cover out of the box, and the six-month warranty.

THE SHORT VERSION

The Regalo Easy Step is the plain white metal gate that shows up in more doorways than any other, and Regalo's own page for it is short on adjectives and long on warnings. The frame stands 30 inches high, holds itself in an opening by four pressure-mounted spindle rods, and swings a 16-inch door on a lever handle with a one-touch release. The bars sit 2 inches apart, the box includes a 6-inch extension and four wall cups, and Regalo rates it for children from 6 to 24 months.

Regalo does not sell the gate from its own site. The buy button on regalo-baby.com is a retailer widget that listed Amazon, Home Depot and Walmart at $44.98 apiece when first read, and Amazon still sold the white gate at $44.98 on October 5, 2026, so the maker's page is the place for specifications and the retailer is the place for the price. What follows is what Regalo states about fit, installation limits, certification and warranty, and where those statements should make a buyer pause.

Our verdict

A basic, certified doorway gate for the bottom of stairs, a kitchen or a hallway, as long as your opening is not between 32 and 35 inches and you install the wall cups Regalo insists on.

A good fit for
A household with a crawler or new walker between 6 and 24 months and a doorway of 29 to 32 inches or 35.5 to 38.5 inches, who wants a walk-through gate that adults can open one-handed.
We would skip it if
The gate would go at the top of a staircase, the opening measures 32 to 35 inches, or you want a gate you can buy and return from the maker directly.

Reasons to consider it

  • Walk-through 16-inch door with a lever handle and one-touch release, on an all-metal frame 30 inches high
  • Pressure mounting with four spindle rods, plus a 6-inch extension and four wall cups in the box
  • Certified by the Baby Safety Alliance and built to ASTM standards, with Regalo's warnings stated plainly

The compromises

  • Regalo says the gate cannot fit an opening of 32 to 35 inches without a separate 4-inch extension
  • Pressure-mount gates are banned by the maker from the top of stairs, and wall cups must be screwed in regardless
  • Regalo does not sell it directly; its page links to Amazon, Home Depot and Walmart, and the warranty runs only six months

What we have not verified: The gate was not installed here. How much the pressure rods mark drywall or trim, how tight the latch stays after months of use, and whether the door swings both ways were not confirmed from Regalo's materials.

Easy Step Safety Gate, White (Model 1160)

A 30-inch steel walk-through gate with a lever latch, a 16-inch door, a 6-inch extension and wall cups included, certified by the Baby Safety Alliance and built to ASTM standards, with Regalo's fit chart making the measuring honest.

Before you buy: Cannot cover 32 to 35 inches without a 4-inch extension, must never go at the top of stairs, is sold only through retailers, and carries a six-month warranty.

Two ranges it fits, and the one it does not

Regalo publishes the fit chart in plain numbers. Without the extension the gate spans 29 to 32 inches; with the included 6-inch extension it spans 35.5 to 38.5 inches. In between, the brand's note is blunt: this gate will not fit an opening of 32 to 35 inches, and an additional 4-inch extension is needed. That extension is listed at $17.99 on Regalo's site, so a 33-inch doorway costs more than the gate's headline range suggests, and the buyer has to know that before the box arrives.

Regalo caps the gate at three extensions in total and, in its FAQ, strongly recommends no more than two on a pressure mount unless the wall cups are used. The Extra Wide version (model 1165) is the alternative for odd widths: it ships with two 4-inch extensions and covers 29 to 41.5 inches in three steps. Measuring across the narrowest point of the opening, at the height where the rods will press, settles the choice between the two.

Pressure rods, mandatory wall cups, and no staircases

The gate mounts by four spindle rods that slide, not thread, into holes on the frame; turning the knobs pushes the rods out against the door frame or wall. Regalo's FAQ page warns that a fresh-from-the-box gate shows a gap at the handle that closes once the frame is under pressure, which is the sort of thing that generates returns when nobody says it. The frame is all metal and the door is 16 inches wide, enough for an adult to pass through carrying a child.

The warnings are the substance of the page. Regalo states in capitals that wall cups must be installed to keep the gate in place, because without them a child can push the gate out and escape, and that a pressure-mounted gate must never be used at the top of stairs. The space between gate and wall must not exceed 2.5 inches, the base lock belongs on the side the child occupies, and the gate should be retired once the child can climb it or dislodge it. Adult assembly is required, and Regalo says the gate also serves for medium to large dogs.

Certified to ASTM, warranted for six months

Regalo states that the Easy Step is certified by the Baby Safety Alliance and meets the safety standards set by the American Society for Testing and Materials; Regalo names the organization but not a standard number. The bar spacing of 2 inches and the 30-inch height are the two dimensions a parent can check against the frame, and the 6-to-24-month age range is Regalo's limit, not a suggestion.

Coverage is short. Regalo offers a six-month limited warranty: if the gate fails under reasonable non-commercial use because of material quality or the workmanship of finish and assembly while owned by the first purchaser, Regalo will repair it or replace it at its option, and a claim needs a receipt, the model number, the batch number and the date of manufacture. The FAQ also states that altering the product voids the coverage and that a broken gate should be taken out of service immediately. Six months is a short window for something meant to hold a toddler for eighteen months.

Regalo points you to retailers, at $44.98

The Easy Step page on regalo-baby.com has no buy button. Instead, a retailer widget lists Amazon, Home Depot and Walmart, each shown at $44.98 on the day this was written, and each button opens the retailer's own listing. Regalo's store data still carries a $50.99 entry for the white gate, but it is marked unavailable, so the practical price is the retailer's. On October 5, 2026 Amazon shipped and sold the white 29 to 38.5 inch gate itself at $44.98, with a 90-day return.

That routing changes how a return works. Regalo's policy is that a product not bought from Regalo must go back to the place of purchase, so a gate bought on Amazon follows Amazon's rules, and Regalo's own one-month return terms, with the buyer paying return shipping, apply only to direct orders that this product does not offer. The warranty is separate and stays with Regalo whichever store sold the gate; the brand asks customers to call before returning anything to a store.

Skip it at the top of stairs and in the 32-to-35 inch dead zone

The first case for passing is the location. Regalo forbids this gate at the top of a staircase, full stop, and no amount of tightening changes that; a hardware-mounted gate is the only correct product there. The second is the opening. If the doorway measures 32 to 35 inches, the gate needs a 4-inch extension that is not in the box, and at that point the Extra Wide model with two extensions included is the cleaner buy.

Pass as well if the child is past 24 months or already climbing, since Regalo's own instruction is to stop using the gate at that point, or if you want a gate that hides in the decor; this one is a white steel grid and looks like it. For a crawler, a standard doorway, and a parent who will screw in the wall cups, the Easy Step does the ordinary job at an ordinary price, and the measuring is the only part that needs care.
