Shark Navigator Lift-Away NV356E Review: A Detachable Pod With Filter Care to Plan For

At $199.99, the NV356E makes sense if you want a detachable pod and the listed Pet Power Brush for stairs, and accept regular filter care plus warranty eligibility that depends on the seller.

THE SHORT VERSION

The Shark Navigator Lift-Away Professional NV356E is a corded bagless upright — model NV356E 26 on the listing, 120 volts, 1200 watts — whose motor-and-dust-cup pod lifts off the floor nozzle so the same suction reaches stairs and furniture. Amazon had it at $199.99 on 2026-09-21, sold and dispatched by the retailer itself, and its accessory bullet names the upright, a Pet Power Brush, a dusting brush, an 8-inch crevice tool and a washable HEPA filter. No NV356E page was found in Shark's current direct catalog; the maker lists the NV360 Deluxe at the same $199.99.

Against the $39.99 corded sticks and the cordless machines a shopper will see beside it, this one differs on two counts. One is the sealed filtration: a screen, a foam filter, a felt filter and a post-motor HEPA filter behind Shark's Anti-Allergen Complete Seal, with five-year limited warranty terms for eligible purchases. The other is mass — 13.7 pounds on Amazon's table, 45.5 inches tall assembled — and a maintenance rhythm the owner's guide spells out in months. Whether those two trade well against each other depends on the floors and the pets in the house.

Our verdict

Choose the NV356E for the listed Pet Power Brush and detachable pod, after confirming accessories and warranty eligibility. If those extras do not matter, the same-priced NV360 from Shark avoids the unresolved retailer-authorization question.

A good fit for
A house mixing carpet, hard floors and shedding pets, whose owner wants one plug-in upright for the next several years and will rinse two pre-motor filters every three months.
We would skip it if
A small all-hard-floor apartment, a household set on going cordless, a home with several flights of stairs where detaching the pod each time grates, or a closet shorter than 45.5 inches.

Reasons to consider it

  • The motor-and-dust-cup pod separates from the floor nozzle for handheld stair and upholstery cleaning; the listing includes a Pet Power Brush, which the manual identifies as an air-driven turbine tool
  • The filtration path is documented stage by stage: screen, foam and felt pre-motor filters, then a post-motor HEPA filter inside a sealed housing, with Shark's 99.9 percent claim tied to a named ASTM F1977 test
  • A five-year limited warranty for eligible purchases, no battery replacement, and two replacement-filter parts still listed by Shark: the $15.99 XFF350 foam-and-felt set and the $41.99 XHF350 HEPA

The compromises

  • Amazon lists 13.7 pounds and 45.5 inches tall; an older Shark chart excludes the cord and accessories from its matching weight, so the listing should not be treated as a complete carrying-weight measurement
  • The maintenance schedule is real work: empty the 0.87-liter cup every session, rinse the foam and felt filters every three months with a 24-hour air dry, and expect suction to drop when that is skipped — the guide says so
  • The five-year warranty excludes normal wear of filters and damage from neglected maintenance, requires an authorized retailer, and a shipping and handling fee may apply to a replacement unit; the 2021 guide quoted $24.95

What we have not verified: An older Shark comparison chart lists NV356E/NV358 with a 30-foot cord plus a 13.7-pound weight excluding cord and accessories. Its larger cup and Dust-Away bundle differ from the current listing, so current configuration details still need confirmation. An independent specification listing gives 16 pounds without a comparable weighing basis. Neither owner's guide supplies detached-pod weight. Amazon's accessory bullet includes a Pet Power Brush, dusting brush and 8-inch crevice tool; its components table omits the turbine brush. Confirm the actual bundle before ordering. Amazon's 80 dB line has no stated test conditions. The reviewed Shark documents do not establish Amazon.com's authorized-retailer status. The newer manual gives annual HEPA washing and three-year replacement; the older two-year washing schedule is a document difference, not evidence of a new generation.

The things in this guide

A closer look at the products, who they may suit, and what to check before buying.

Shark Navigator Lift-Away Professional Upright Vacuum · NV356E
Consider it for the bundled turbine brush and detachable stair-cleaning pod

Navigator Lift-Away Professional Upright Vacuum · NV356E

The September 21 Amazon offer was $199.99 with Amazon.com as seller. Its listed Pet Power Brush adds an air-driven upholstery attachment to the detachable pod, while the upright nozzle has a carpet brushroll and bare-floor shutoff. Check the bundle and seller's warranty eligibility before ordering.

Before you buy: The old 13.7-pound specification excludes cord and accessories; detached-pod weight remains unknown. Confirm the current cord length and turbine-tool bundle. Quarterly pre-motor filter rinsing is required, and normal filter wear is excluded from warranty.

What the red button on the pod solves, and what it does not

The Lift-Away mechanism lets you leave the floor nozzle downstairs while carrying the motor, dust cup and filters. Press the red release on the canister with a foot holding down the nozzle, then lift the pod by its handle. Attach a tool to the handle or wand for stairs and furniture. The listing specifies a 5-foot hose and a 1200-watt machine, but electrical input does not establish suction at an attachment or carpet-cleaning performance. Reassembly reconnects the pod to the motorized floor nozzle.

With the pod detached, the main motorized brushroll stays on the floor nozzle. The Pet Power Brush is a separate turbine attachment driven by airflow. That distinction matters on carpeted stairs: you get a smaller brushing tool, not the upright head in miniature with its own powered drive. Shark gives no detached-pod weight. For frequent trips between several floors, check whether carrying it and reconnecting the nozzle feels manageable before choosing it over a lighter stick or a separate upstairs vacuum.

The sealed HEPA claim, read with its own footnote

The listing's filtration line is precise once you read to the asterisks: the vacuum "traps 99.9%* of dust and allergens**", where the first note reads "Based on ASTM F1977 (0.3 microns+), tested by IBR Laboratories per ASTM F1977-22 standard test method of a vacuum cleaner system, 2024" and the second reads "Allergens refer to non-living matter." So the number is a result Shark cites from a named outside lab on a standard particle test, and the word allergens is defined there as non-living matter, not anything alive. The figure describes what leaves the exhaust; it is silent on anyone's symptoms, and Shark does not claim otherwise.

What backs it is a four-stage path the guide draws out: a screen inside the dust cup, a foam filter and a felt filter over the motor intake, and a post-motor HEPA filter behind a cover on the front of the pod. Sealing matters alongside the HEPA media — air that leaks around the filter housing goes unfiltered — and Shark's Anti-Allergen Complete Seal label is a claim about that housing, not the filter alone. Separately, switch position I stops the brushroll for bare floors, and position II spins it for carpet. That documents a surface setting, not a measured guarantee against debris scattering.

The weight excludes more than the listing makes clear

Amazon lists 13.7 pounds and dimensions of 14.96 by 11.4 by 45.5 inches. An older Shark comparison chart also gives 13.7 pounds for NV356E/NV358, but explicitly excludes the cord and accessories. That historical figure cannot establish the weight you will actually carry. It is still substantially above Bissell's under-three-pound FeatherWeight, while the detached Shark pod's weight is unspecified. Measure storage clearance against the listed 45.5-inch height; the guide assumes upright storage with the cord wrapped on two hooks.

The same older chart gives the NV356E/NV358 a 30-foot cord. Its Dust-Away bundle and cup specification differ from the current Amazon offer, whose table lists hose length but not cord length. Ask the seller to confirm the supplied unit's cord if outlet spacing determines the purchase. The NV360 currently has a documented 25-foot cord, but that is a different model. The guide discourages extension cords. Empty the NV356E's listed 0.87-liter cup after each session and sooner when debris reaches MAX.

Five years of warranty, and the filter bill it leaves you

The five-year warranty covers qualifying defects in the unit and non-wearable parts for the original owner, subject to household use and required maintenance. Purchases must come from a SharkNinja-authorized retailer; the documents examined do not establish Amazon.com's status. Confirm eligibility with Shark if the warranty drives your choice, or consider buying the NV360 direct. Normal filter wear and damage caused by neglected maintenance are excluded. Save your purchase receipt for Shark. Shark's current online terms say a shipping and handling fee may apply when an approved replacement unit is sent, and the 2021 guide put that charge at $24.95.

Follow the maintenance guide supplied with your unit: the 2021 guide calls for quarterly foam-and-felt rinsing and annual HEPA rinsing, with cold water and at least 24 hours of air drying. The older guide gives a two-year HEPA washing interval. Replacement is separate: the newer guide specifies 2.5 years for the pre-motor set and three years for HEPA. One $15.99 XFF350 set plus one $41.99 XHF350 totals $57.98 before the fifth anniversary, or $73.97 including another pre-motor set due then, before tax and shipping. Shark's pages warn that sub-$99 orders may carry a $10 shipping fee. Condition and use can change replacement needs.

Where $199.99 goes instead, and who should walk past

Shark lists the NV360 Deluxe direct at $199.99, with a published 25-foot cord, 14.42-pound weight, sealed HEPA filtration and five-year limited warranty. It includes a crevice tool and upholstery tool. The NV356E listing adds the turbine Pet Power Brush and dusting brush, making those accessories its clearest advantage at equal prices. Confirm the bundle because the listing's components table omits the turbine tool. Choose the NV360 if the supplied upholstery attachment covers your cleaning tasks and buying from Shark matters more than those extras.

For a small, mostly hard-floored apartment, the Bissell FeatherWeight was $39.99 at its September 11 price check, with a single filter and no brushroll. It serves a lighter cleaning task. The NV356E is worth considering when carpeted stairs and upholstery make its detachable pod and listed turbine tool useful, provided the bundle and warranty eligibility are confirmed. If repeated pod carrying, quarterly filter rinsing or the unresolved cord length would frustrate you, skip it. The extra attachments only add value if you will use them.
