In this guide
Some gifts have to be chosen with no information: a colleague drawn from a hat, a host you have met once, a relative whose habits you cannot recall. The usual advice is to be thoughtful, which is impossible without facts. The useful advice is to remove every variable that could make the gift wrong.
Three variables account for most failed gifts: a size that does not fit, a connector that does not match, and a taste that is not shared. The three picks below each carry no such risk. They are not exciting, which is the point; a surprise gift's job is to be usable by anyone who opens it.
The things in this guide
A closer look at the products, who they may suit, and what to check before buying.

Standard Baggu
A $16 Standard Baggu is a reusable bag that folds into its own pouch, has one size for everyone, and does a job every household already has, which makes it about as safe as a gift can be.
Before you buy: It is a soft bag with no structure, so it is for groceries and errands rather than anything fragile. Someone who already owns three will own four.

Travel Tumbler · 500ml
Kinto's 500 ml travel tumbler at $36.80 holds coffee or water for anyone, needs no cable and no app, and is neutral enough in finish to sit on any desk.
Before you buy: Kinto's own guidance says to keep it upright and out of the dishwasher. It is a daily object for a person who already carries a drink, and a shelf object for one who does not.

IKEA 365+ Glass · 15 oz, clear glass, 6-pack
IKEA's 365+ glasses, six for $12.99, are plain, clear, dishwasher safe and 15 oz, which is a size and a look that fits any cupboard without asking what the recipient likes.
Before you buy: They are inexpensive and look it, so this is a gift for a household rather than a gesture toward a person. IKEA also notes they are not designed to be stacked and should not meet a sudden temperature change.

A gift goes wrong for a small number of reasons, and they repeat. Clothing and footwear fail on size. Cables, cases and chargers fail on the connector. Food, drink, scent and anything with a strong style fail on taste. Each of those is a variable the giver has to know, and a stranger's gift is one where not one of them are known.
The way out is to choose objects with no such variable at all. That removes most of what people think of as good gifts, which is uncomfortable, and leaves the plain household objects that everyone uses and nobody buys for themselves. Those objects do not impress in the box, and they are used the following week, which for a gift given without information is the best outcome available.
The bag with one size and a job every household has
BAGGU lists the Standard at $16 in a single size, a reusable bag that folds into a small pouch. There is no fit to get wrong, no port, and no flavor; every household carries things, and a bag that lives in a coat pocket or a glove box does a job the recipient already performs with something worse.
The limit is that it is a bag. A recipient who owns several will add one to the pile, and a soft bag with no structure is wrong for anything fragile or heavy on one side. BAGGU prints one set of measurements rather than a size range, 25.5 by 15.5 by 6 inches, with a 50 lb load line and a flat 5 by 5 inch pouch it folds into, so there is no size for a giver to choose.
A tumbler needs no cable and no account
Kinto's 500 ml travel tumbler costs $36.80 and holds a hot or cold drink with nothing to charge, nothing to pair and no size to choose. Its finish is muted enough to sit on any desk, and a drink container is one of the few objects that suits an office, a car and a kitchen equally. For a giver working blind, that reach is the whole argument.
Two limits are Kinto's own: keep the tumbler upright when carrying it, and keep it out of the dishwasher, microwave and oven, with no boiling water and no carbonated drinks inside. That makes it a daily companion for a person who already brings a drink along and a shelf ornament for one who does not. And at nearly $37 it is the most expensive of the three picks, which suits an occasion where the budget wants to be visible and suits a small gesture less well.
Six clear glasses fit a cupboard you have never seen
IKEA sells its 365+ glass six to a box at $12.99, clear, 15 oz, 5 inches tall and dishwasher safe. A clear glass has no style to clash with and no capacity that surprises, and six of them fill a gap that every kitchen has after a breakage. It is the plainest of the three gifts here and, for a recipient about whom nothing is known, possibly the most useful.
The trade is obvious. A box of glasses reads as a household gift, not a personal one, so it suits a host, a new neighbor or an office draw far better than a friend. IKEA's own care lines apply and are worth passing on: the glasses are not designed to be stacked, and a warm beverage poured into a cold glass is the sudden temperature change to avoid. Within those limits, a giver who knows nothing about the recipient cannot get this one wrong.
When you know one fact, use it instead
Skip the no-variable rule the moment you learn one true thing about the recipient. A coffee habit, a dog, a phone with a known port: any one of those points to a gift chosen for that person rather than a bag or a glass.
Leave the rule when the occasion asks for a gesture instead of an object. A gift with no variable is also a gift with no message, and there are moments, a farewell, a thank-you, a difficult year, when a plain useful thing lands as indifference. In those cases a note, a meal or money says more than any of the three picks above.
