Ubbi's diaper pail is an oval, powder-coated steel can with a sliding lid, a child lock, and a 13-gallon compartment that takes any standard kitchen trash bag. On 2026-09-17 Amazon's buybox read $69.99 for the white version, In Stock, sold and shipped by Amazon.com, against a $79.99 list. Ubbi's own store matches the white price and has sold the same basic pail since 2011 as the self-described first steel diaper pail.
Two claims carry the purchase: that any 13-gallon kitchen bag undercuts a proprietary refill cassette on cost, and that steel holds no smell where porous plastic soaks it up. Both trace to Ubbi's own materials, and the second has no public measurement behind it. The conditions — dry-cloth-only cleaning, twice-a-week bag changes, a $15 warranty shipping fee — decides how the pail lives in a nursery.
Our verdict
Buy the $69.99 Ubbi to run a nursery pail on any 13-gallon bag — $13 to $25 of bags a year against about $67 of Diaper Genie refills. Skip it if one-handed disposal above all else settles the purchase.
- A good fit for
- Nurseries in the diaper-heavy first year whose owners want out of proprietary refills, and who have 8 by 11 inches of floor next to the changing table.
- We would skip it if
- Households that rank one-handed disposal first, and anyone who already owns a Diaper Genie they like — Amazon-brand compatible refills soften its refill bill.
Reasons to consider it
- Takes any standard 13-gallon kitchen bag or cloth liner — the maker's FAQ rules out 'expensive, hard-to-find, proprietary refills'
- Odor control has a stated mechanism per the maker: non-porous steel first, then rubber seals around the rim and sliding lid as 'an additional barrier', tested in design with soiled diapers and smoke
- Ubbi publishes the whole size-by-size curve — 55 newborn diapers down to 20 pull-ups — and the warranty runs three years from purchase
The compromises
- The maker itself warns the pail smells when opened, recommends changing the bag twice weekly, and allows dry-cloth cleaning only — trapped moisture can grow mold and rust inside an airtight can
- Warranty replacements carry a $15 shipping fee, and Ubbi can refuse them for wear and tear or care-instruction violations; dent and chip resistance is documented nowhere
- The sliding lid takes a hand and a slide — no pedal or sensor exists in any maker document — and on Ubbi's own store every colorway but white costs $10 to $20 more (Amazon's gift-set and Venti variants sit outside that ladder)
What we have not verified: The odor case stands on the maker's materials: the smoke-and-diapers design check is one FAQ paragraph, and no independent measurement of the steel-plus-seal claim turned up. Nothing quantifies dent resistance or powder-coat durability, and the warranty excludes wear and tear without addressing cosmetics. The seal is a 'silicone seal ring' on Ubbi's page but 'rubber seals' in the FAQ — unresolved wording. The Amazon Basics compatible-refill box was priced in a non-U.S. currency when rendered, so the size of the Genie owner's escape hatch is unpriced, and Diaper Genie carbon-filter replacement prices were not checked. All prices are 2026-09-17 snapshots; a same-day render at a non-U.S. delivery address still showed $69.99, but shipping and import terms follow the delivery address.

Steel Diaper Pail
$69.99 on Amazon's buybox (2026-09-17, white, sold and shipped by Amazon.com) buys a steel, powder-coated pail with a sliding, child-locked lid and a seal that runs on any 13-gallon bag: $13 to $25 of bags across a 3,000-diaper first year against about $67 of official Diaper Genie refills, and a three-year maker warranty starting at purchase.
Before you buy: The odor claim is the maker's, unmeasured publicly, and the pail smells when open by the maker's admission; changing the bag twice weekly and dry-cloth-only cleaning are the maker's rules; there is no pedal — the lid slides; on the maker's store, most colorways cost $79.99 and chrome $89.99.

Ubbi's FAQ gives the mechanism in two layers. Steel comes first: 'Steel is an odor blocking material, as opposed to plastic which quickly absorbs the smell due to the porous nature of the material.' Seals come second, explicitly as 'an additional barrier': rubber seals around the rim and the sliding lid make the pail, in the maker's words, completely airtight. The same FAQ claims design-phase testing — the pail was checked with dirty diapers and smoke to confirm nothing escaped. The contrast being drawn is with plastic pails, which Ubbi says act like a sponge and transpire absorbed odor into the nursery even when closed.
Ubbi adds a caveat of its own, worth equal attention. The FAQ concedes the pail 'will smell when opened, or on the inside' — like any diaper pail — and its answer is behavior, not hardware: change the bag twice a week, roll diapers tight, or buy Ubbi's own lavender sacks and odor-absorbing gel. The airtight seal also imposes a maintenance rule: wipe with a dry cloth only, because 'any liquid, including Lysol, bleach, or harsh abrasives, even water' can condense inside and grow 'mold and rust.' A sealed can that forbids water and bleach is a real maintenance constraint for a diaper pail.
Refills against kitchen bags, in dollars
The American Academy of Pediatrics' parent site counts about six changes a day, nearly 3,000 diapers in the first year. A Diaper Genie refill holds up to 270 newborn diapers and the current three-pack lists at $17.99 — $6.00 a cassette — so 3,000 diapers come to about 11 refills, $66.67. The same year in an Ubbi costs bags: about 55 fills at the maker's 55-newborn-diaper capacity, or 104 bags at the maker's recommended twice-weekly change. Amazon Basics 13-gallon drawstrings work out to 24 cents a bag in the 45-count box, so the bag bill lands between $13.20 and $24.96.
Totaled for year one, the Ubbi runs $83 to $95 against about $123 for a Diaper Genie Complete — $62.19 for the unit and its included refill, plus roughly ten more refills for the remaining diapers at $6.00 each — so the steel pail's $7.80 hardware premium disappears inside the first months of refills, and from year two the gap runs $42 to $53 a year. Genie owners have partial cover: Amazon Basics sells refills compatible with the Complete, Elite, and Expressions pails, eight 270-count packs per box, sold and shipped by Amazon. Both capacity counts here are newborn-sized, so bulkier toddler diapers shrink the numbers on both sides without flipping the ratio.
What fits inside, and how much floor it takes
Ubbi publishes a size-by-size curve, and it drops fast: about 55 newborn diapers, 50 size-1, 41 size-2, 38 size-3, 31 size-4, 23 size-5, and 20 pull-ups per fill. At the six-a-day average, a full can takes about nine days to fill in newborn sizes, and under four days once the baby is in pull-ups. The can stands 19.5 inches tall on an 8.38-by-11.38-inch oval floor print, weighs 5.15 pounds, and holds 13 gallons — slim enough for the gap beside a changing table, the placement the FAQ's tight-spaces answer points at.
The lid slides and locks; the FAQ calls it a 'safety childproof lock' that keeps little hands from opening the sliding lid. Ubbi's materials name no pedal, sensor, or battery — the FAQ even lists 'no filter, battery, cartridge or special bag' as a feature — so every deposit is a hand on the lid. For a 3 a.m. change with one arm occupied, that is the friction to weigh against the refill savings.
Steel's dents and chips, and what the warranty covers
Steel with a powder coat wraps the ABS internals and the seal ring, per the maker's materials list. Nothing in Ubbi's documents quantifies dent resistance or finish durability, and the warranty promises neither: it is a 3-year promise, running from the purchase date, to replace a pail with a manufacturer defect — with a $15 shipping fee on approved replacements, and refusals allowed for wear and tear, care-instruction violations, or disassembly. A dent from a kick is not a manufacturer defect, and a chip in the powder coat has no published remedy; both outcomes stay with the owner.
Recall history is clean for this pail: the only Ubbi notice a CPSC recall search surfaced covers about 6,200 Ubbi Connecting Bath Toys, recalled by importer Pearhead in August 2019 for laceration and choking hazards — an unrelated product line — and the same search on the diaper pail returns nothing.
White is the anchor price; colors add $10 to $20
The $69.99 figure is the white pail, and both Amazon's buybox and Ubbi's store printed it on 2026-09-17. On the maker's store, most colorways — gray, ivory, blush pink, sage, taupe, open water, and the matte finishes — list at $79.99, chrome at $89.99, and marble showed as sold out. Amazon's listing carries more than a dozen swatches, including a gift set and a larger Venti pail, so the swatch tapped sets the price. The buybox offer came with 90-day returns; Ubbi's own store ships only the contiguous U.S., in five to fourteen business days by FedEx.
Who should keep the pail they already own
A working Diaper Genie is a reason to skip the switch: the $62.19 Complete costs $7.80 less up front, ships with a refill and a carbon filter, and accepts Amazon-brand compatible refills that cut its cassette bill. What switching buys is independence — any bag, no cassette supply chain — plus a wipe-dry steel interior; it does not buy capacity, since both systems count the same newborn diapers. A nursery past diapering needs neither pail, and a plain lidded can stocked with the 13-gallon bags you already buy remains the zero-dollar baseline the Ubbi has to beat at $69.99.
