Away calls The Bigger Carry-On its best-selling suitcase, and the listing prices it at $295 in Jet Black, with Navy Blue, Coast Blue, Olive Green, Sea Green, Salt White, Blush Pink and Cherry Red as standard colors and Alien Green, Jessie Red, Tide Line Stripe and Pearl White as limited editions. It is the standard-size carry-on in the Classic line: a 100% polycarbonate shell at 22.7 by 15.4 by 9.6 inches, 49 liters and 7.9 pounds, with the same spinner wheels, two-height trolley, TSA-approved combination lock and compression pad found on The Carry-On.
The interesting document is not the listing but Away's airline chart, which gives the Bigger size its own column and prints a no in ten of forty rows. Away's copy handles the gap with a single word: the smaller bag is sized to fit in all overhead bins, the Bigger is sized to fit in the overhead bin of most major US airlines. This piece reads that chart, the durability figures Away publishes, and the LifetimeCare Coverage terms in force for purchases made on or after April 14, 2026, and treats the eight extra liters as the price of admission to all of it.
Our verdict
Away's best-selling carry-on at $295 is the size most domestic US flyers should pick and the size international flyers need to check against a chart first. It adds eight liters and roughly an inch of height and width over The Carry-On for $20 more, and Away's November 2025 sizer results mark it as failing at ten of the forty carriers listed, so the decision is about where you fly, not about the suitcase itself.
- A good fit for
- Four-to-seven-day trips on American, Delta, United, Southwest, JetBlue or Alaska, where Away lists the Bigger size as passing, and packers who would sooner fill one 49-liter shell than juggle a smaller bag plus a stuffed personal item.
- We would skip it if
- Your regular routes include Lufthansa, Air Canada, Icelandair, Austrian or Allegiant, all marked as failing on Away's chart; you want a suitcase under 7.5 pounds; or you plan to resell or hand the bag down, since LifetimeCare stays with whoever bought it.
Reasons to consider it
- Away lists a 22.7 by 15.4 by 9.6 inch exterior with handles and wheels included, a 20.9 by 15 by 7.9 inch interior, 49 liters and 7.9 pounds, and its compare page puts that at eight liters and 0.4 pounds over The Carry-On for $20 more
- The hardware matches the smaller bag: 100% polycarbonate shell, 360-degree spinner wheels, a two-height quick-release trolley, reverse coil zippers, a TSA-approved combination lock and a double-buckle compression pad with two pockets and a zipper flap pocket
- Away publishes durability figures for the design: handles pulled 1,500 times at up to 60 pounds, wheels rolled the equivalent of 480 New York City blocks, zippers cycled 8,000 times and loaded drop tests at 10 degrees Fahrenheit
The compromises
- The Bigger column on Away's airline chart holds ten failures, including Lufthansa, Austrian, Air Canada, Icelandair and Allegiant, on the same page where the plain Carry-On passes every row
- Away's own copy describes the Bigger as fitting the overhead bin of most major US airlines, while The Carry-On is described as fitting all overhead bins; the difference in wording is deliberate
- Two capacity figures appear on the listing, 49 liters in the size tab and 47.9 liters in the page metadata, and LifetimeCare's complimentary repairs end at year five with a possible service fee afterward
What we have not verified: Nothing here was measured, weighed or rolled; every dimension, weight and test figure is Away's. Away lists 49 liters in the size tab and 47.9 liters in the page's meta description, so the true capacity likely sits between them. The airline chart is dated November 2025, and Away marks United, Air Canada, Qantas and other carriers with a double asterisk as not verified by its own sizer testing that year, so those rows rest on customer reports and airline data. Whether a year-six repair draws a service fee is at Away's discretion and no fee schedule is published. Away's FAQ page did not render for this research, so the 100-day return terms are taken from the summary on the listing.

The Bigger Carry-On · 100634MBLKV1
For $20 over The Carry-On you get eight more liters, a 4-to-7-day packing range in Away's guidance and a hardware list that is identical line for line; Away's own compare page says customers who are between sizes usually prefer this one.
Before you buy: Ten carriers on Away's chart, most of them European or Canadian, mark it as failing the sizer, the listing prints two different capacity figures, and free repairs under LifetimeCare stop at five years unless the $35 Pro extension is added within 100 days.

Away's size tab lists a 22.7 by 15.4 by 9.6 inch exterior, a 20.9 by 15 by 7.9 inch interior, 7.9 pounds and 49 liters, and states that the measurements include handles and wheels. The compare page translates that to 57.7 by 39.2 by 24.4 centimeters and 3.6 kilograms and sets it beside The Carry-On at 21.7 by 14.4 by 9 inches, 41 liters and 7.5 pounds for $275. Away's FAQ frames the gap as about eight liters and about one inch taller and wider, which matches the tables, and puts the Bigger at six to nine outfits for a four-to-seven-day trip against five to seven outfits and a span of three days to five for the smaller bag.
One number needs a caveat. The size tab says 49 liters, but the page's meta description, the text a search engine shows under the title, describes a 47.9-liter suitcase. The difference is about a liter, which is small, but it is the kind of leftover that shows a listing edited across revisions, and it means the capacity should be read as roughly 48 to 49 liters, not as a lab figure. The Shopify record behind it lists SKU 100634MBLKV1 at $295.00 for Jet Black, and the Insider Packing Cubes Away pairs with it add $48, or $343 for both as a bundle.
The Bigger column on the airline chart
Away's chart lists forty carriers with separate columns for the Carry-On sizes and the Bigger Carry-On sizes, and states that the results come from placing empty suitcases in the sizers at JFK, EWR, LGA, STN, LGW and LHR, accurate as of November 2025. In the Bigger column, thirty rows carry a check mark and ten carry an X: Air Canada, Air Europa, Air India, Allegiant, Austrian Airlines, China Southern, Icelandair, Lufthansa, Qantas and Vueling. The large US carriers, American, Delta, United, Southwest, JetBlue, Alaska, Frontier and Sun Country, are all marked as passing. Spirit does not appear on the chart at all.
Two footnotes change how much weight to put on a given row. A double asterisk marks carriers Away could not verify in its 2025 testing because no sizer was available, and that group includes United, Air Canada, Qantas, KLM and Porter Air, so their entries rest on customer reports, partner sizers and airline statements. Away also notes that the sizer at your airport may differ from the ones it used and that any airline can gate-check a bag when bins are full. Read against that, the listing's phrase, fits overhead on most major US airlines, is accurate and carefully narrower than the all overhead bins wording Away uses for The Carry-On.
Shell, hardware and the test figures Away publishes
The features list is the Classic line's standard set: a 100% polycarbonate shell, 360-degree spinner wheels, a quick-release trolley handle with two height settings, reverse coil zippers, a TSA-approved combination lock, a double-buckle compression pad, three mesh pockets plus one hanging pocket, an underside grab handle, a water-repellent polyester laundry bag with a drawstring and a luggage tag in 50% recycled leather. The photo captions add two compression pad pockets and a zipper flap pocket to the interior, and the suitcase nests inside The Medium, The Large and The Trunk. There is no battery: Away states the Classic line dropped it in July 2023 and the current shell cannot take one.
Away also prints test figures on the listing, which most luggage makers do not. Every handle design is pulled 1,500 times at up to 60 pounds, every design is rolled the equivalent of 480 New York City blocks, zippers are cycled up to 8,000 times, and shells are loaded to 60 pounds and dropped repeatedly at 10 degrees Fahrenheit. These are Away's numbers with no method published beyond those sentences, so they describe a testing program, not a pass rate, but they give a buyer something concrete to hold the company to, and the compare page lists the Bigger Carry-On Flex at 8.6 pounds and $345 if 2.25 inches of zipper expansion matters more than the 0.7-pound penalty.
LifetimeCare, read as a contract and not as a name
Suitcases bought on or after 8:00 AM EST on April 14, 2026 come with Away LifetimeCare Coverage, which the terms describe as limited coverage for functional damage, meaning failures that make the bag unusable, from manufacturing defects or what Away calls the unpredictability of travel, airline mishandling included. For five years from purchase, repairs are free including parts, labor, repair kits and round-trip shipping within the country of purchase, and if Away judges the bag unrepairable it supplies one replacement inside that window. From year six, repairs of functional damage continue for what Away calls the reasonable expected life of the suitcase, subject to a reasonable service fee in some cases, while in-store repairs stay free for now and shipping stays covered.
LifetimeCare Pro costs $35.00, extends free repairs to ten years with up to two replacements, and can be added at checkout or within 100 days of purchase. The parts that cut against the name are the eligibility and exclusion clauses: coverage belongs to the person who bought the bag new from Away or an authorized retailer, or to a gift recipient inside a 30-day window, and ends when the bag changes hands; bags bought through eBay, Poshmark or unauthorized Amazon sellers are excluded; and scratches, dents, dings, scuffs, stains and color changes are named as not covered, which on a matte polycarbonate shell is most of the damage a suitcase collects. Away's overview page says 94% of suitcases sold have never needed a warranty repair or a replacement, a figure it does not source. Bags bought before April 14, 2026 stay under the previous lifetime terms.
When to skip it
Skip The Bigger Carry-On if the carriers you fly most sit in the failing ten on Away's chart. Lufthansa, Austrian, Air Canada, Icelandair, Air Europa and Vueling cover a lot of transatlantic and intra-European routing, and Allegiant is a US carrier with a smaller sizer, so a buyer who flies those regularly gets a suitcase that may need to be checked at the gate while paying $20 more than the size that passes every row. The Carry-On at $275 and 41 liters is the answer there, and Away's own compare page says as much by labeling it as fitting almost any flight.
Pass on it as well if weight is the constraint, since 7.9 pounds empty is 0.4 pounds over the smaller bag and 1.3 pounds over Herschel's soft duffle territory, or if you expect the coverage to follow the suitcase to a second owner, which the LifetimeCare terms rule out. And if the size question is only about a day or two of extra clothing, note that Away's guidance gives the smaller bag three days to five and this one four to seven, an overlap wide enough that a compression pad and one packing cube close most of it without buying the larger shell.
