Away The Carry-On Review: Buy It for the Airline Chart, Then Read the Five-Year Clock

Away lists The Carry-On at $275 with a 41-liter polycarbonate shell and a per-airline sizer chart it tested itself. Buyers after April 14, 2026 get LifetimeCare Coverage, a different contract from the lifetime warranty the name suggests.

THE SHORT VERSION

Away sells The Carry-On as the smallest suitcase in its Classic hardside line, listed at $275 in Jet Black, one of twelve colors on the picker. The specification panel gives a 22 by 14.4 by 9.1 inch exterior, handles and wheels included, a 41-liter capacity and a 7.5-pound weight, and the features panel reads like the standard modern carry-on: a 100% polycarbonate shell, four spinner wheels, a TSA-approved combination lock, a compression pad and a trolley handle with two heights. Very little on that list separates it from the rest of the hardside market on paper.

Two documents do the separating. The first is Away's airline compatibility chart, where the company reports putting empty suitcases into the sizers at six airports and records which of its sizes passed at forty carriers. The second is the LifetimeCare Coverage contract that replaced Away's limited lifetime warranty for purchases on or after April 14, 2026, which has more structure and more expiry dates than its name implies.

Our verdict

A $275 hardside carry-on to buy for its fit record: Away's airline chart marks the plain Carry-On as fitting all forty carriers listed. LifetimeCare is five years of free repairs and then paid service, not a lifetime guarantee.

A good fit for
Frequent flyers on US carriers who want a hardside bag with a published fit record, and buyers who value a repair-first policy that covers airline damage during the first five years.
We would skip it if
You pack for more than five days without a checked bag, you want the pop-out battery Away dropped, or you buy secondhand or from a marketplace seller, since coverage stops with the first owner and excludes unauthorized resellers.

Reasons to consider it

  • Away's airline chart marks the Carry-On as fitting all forty listed carriers, with American, Delta, JetBlue, Alaska and Southwest among those it checked in airport sizers with empty bags
  • The shell is 100% polycarbonate with 360-degree spinner wheels, a two-height trolley handle, a TSA-approved combination lock and a double-buckle compression pad on the packing side
  • LifetimeCare covers functional damage from airline and baggage mishandling and from drops, not only manufacturing defects, with round-trip repair shipping included inside the country of purchase

The compromises

  • Complimentary repairs stop at year five; the terms allow a service fee from year six, and the only replacement is one per suitcase unless you pay $35 for LifetimeCare Pro
  • Scratches, dents, scuffs and stains are excluded outright, and on a matte polycarbonate shell that is the damage most owners will actually accumulate
  • The ejectable battery is gone: Away states the Classic line dropped it in July 2023 and the current shell cannot take one

What we have not verified: Away's listing carries three sets of numbers for one bag: the specification panel says 22 by 14.4 by 9.1 inches, two FAQ answers say 21.7 by 14.4 by 9, and the description tag still reads 7.1 lb and 39.8 liters against the panel's 7.5 lb and 41, so the older figures may describe an earlier revision. The Bigger Carry-On reads 22.7 by 15.4 by 9.6 inches in the FAQ and 23 by 15.4 by 9.4 on its own panel. The sizer chart is dated November 2025 and flags United, Air Canada and several other carriers as unverified. The year-six service fee is left to Away's discretion, with no published fee schedule.

The Carry-On · 100633MBLKV1

Away is one of the few luggage makers publishing a carrier-by-carrier sizer record for its own bags, and the plain Carry-On passes every row on that chart while the Bigger Carry-On fails at Air Canada, Lufthansa, Icelandair and seven others.

Before you buy: Five days of clothing is the stated ceiling, the finish damage most owners collect is excluded from coverage, and free repairs end at year five unless the $35 Pro extension is bought within 100 days.

The spec sheet, and the second set of numbers under it

The specification panel lists a 22 by 14.4 by 9.1 inch exterior, a 20.1 by 13.9 by 7.5 inch interior, 7.5 pounds and 41 liters, and it states that the measurements include handles and wheels, which matters because plenty of luggage brands quote the shell alone. Two size FAQ answers on the same listing give a smaller box at 21.7 by 14.4 by 9 inches, and a Bigger Carry-On at 22.7 by 15.4 by 9.6, where the Bigger's own panel prints 23 by 15.4 by 9.4 inches, 49 liters and 7.9 pounds at $295, a $20 step for eight more liters.

A third set sits in the listing's description tag, where a shopper only meets it in search results: a 7.1-pound bag with 39.8 liters. That looks like a figure from an earlier revision nobody updated. The gaps are small, but they show a page edited over years whose numbers are all Away's own. Take the specification panel as current, and treat the 0.3 inch of exterior length and the 0.4-pound difference as the margin of error on every other figure in the listing.

What the airline chart actually says

Away's chart lists forty airlines with a column for the Carry-On sizes and one for the Bigger Carry-On sizes, and the plain Carry-On gets a check mark in every row. Away says the results come from placing empty suitcases in the sizers at JFK, EWR, LGA, STN, LGW and LHR, that the information is accurate as of November 2025, and that the chart covers all Carry-On styles, including Softside, Aluminum and Flex when the Flex is not expanded.

Read the footnotes before treating a check mark as a promise. Airlines marked with a double asterisk, United and Air Canada among them, were not verified in the 2025 testing because no sizer was available, and their rows rest on customer reports and airline statements. Spirit does not appear on the list at all. Away also notes that a gate agent can still check any bag when bins are full, and that the sizer at your airport may differ from the ones it used. The chart is still more than most luggage makers publish, and the Bigger Carry-On's ten failures on the same page show Away is willing to print a no.

Shell, wheels, and the battery that is no longer there

The features panel names a 100% polycarbonate shell, 360-degree spinner wheels Away calls smooth-gliding, a quick-release trolley handle with two height settings, reverse coil zippers, a TSA-approved combination lock, a double-buckle compression pad, three mesh pockets plus one hanging pocket, an underside grab handle, a drawstring laundry bag and a luggage tag made from 50% recycled leather. It nests inside The Medium, The Large and The Trunk for storage between trips.

If you remember the Away suitcase for its pop-out charger, the battery page now says the Classic suitcases no longer ship with a battery, the current design cannot accept one, and its instructions apply only to Classic bags sold before July 2023. There is no add-on battery to price. The wheels, trolley, handles, zippers and lock are the components LifetimeCare lists as covered, which is a reasonable proxy for the parts Away expects to fail first.

LifetimeCare is a five-year plan with a long tail

Purchases made on or after 8:00 AM EST on April 14, 2026 fall under LifetimeCare Coverage, which the terms describe as a limited warranty. For five years from purchase, repairs of functional damage are free, including parts, labor, repair kits and round-trip shipping inside the country of purchase, and functional damage explicitly includes airline mishandling and drops as well as manufacturing defects. If Away decides a bag is unrepairable, it provides one replacement within that five-year window, and a replacement may be a repaired unit in a different color.

From year six the terms allow a reasonable service fee in some cases, with in-store repairs staying free for now and Away reserving the right to end that. LifetimeCare Pro costs $35.00 at checkout, stretches free repairs to ten years with up to two replacements, and can be added within 100 days of purchase. Two details cut against the marketing. Coverage belongs only to the first owner or a gift recipient within 30 days, so a secondhand Away has no coverage at all, and the summary on the listing says shipping stays free after year five without mentioning the fee, so the terms page is the one to trust.

When to skip it

Skip The Carry-On if the damage you worry about is cosmetic. The exclusions list scratches, dents, dings, scuffs, stains and color changes by name, and a matte polycarbonate shell collects exactly that wear over a few dozen flights; only failures that make the bag unusable count. Look elsewhere as well if you buy luggage used or from a marketplace seller, because eBay, Poshmark and unauthorized Amazon sellers are named as voiding coverage and coverage does not transfer to a second owner.

Skip it on capacity if five days is not enough. Away's trip guidance puts the Carry-On at between three and five days, with five to seven outfits, and the Bigger Carry-On adds eight liters for $20 more but takes a cross in ten of the forty rows on the fit chart, most of them European or Canadian, so the upgrade trades international fit for space. Finally, if a suitcase battery was the reason you remembered the brand, that product no longer exists in the Classic line and no current Away shell accepts one.
