In this guide
Style 1903 is the women's cut of the sock that made Darn Tough's reputation with thru-hikers: a micro crew that averages 7.5 inches from heel to cuff, a midweight knit the brand calls all-season, terry loops under the whole foot, and a toe closed with the True Seamless method so there is no ridge under the nail. The blend is 59% merino wool, 39% nylon and 2% Lycra spandex, and every pair is knit in the company's Vermont mill from yarn bought worldwide.
The price is $26 for a single pair, the same figure Darn Tough asks for the men's 1466 reviewed separately on this site. What separates a $26 sock from a $12 one is not the wool, which is a standard proportion, but the promise printed on the cuff: if the socks wear out, ever, the brand replaces them. Understanding what that promise costs you in practice is the point of this review.
Our verdict
A $26 sock whose price makes sense only when read with the lifetime replacement policy; the fiber blend and cushion are ordinary for the category, the guarantee is not.
- A good fit for
- A hiker in women's US shoe sizes 4.5 to 11.5 who wears mid-height boots or trail shoes in three seasons and would like to buy socks once.
- We would skip it if
- You run hot and hike mostly in summer, you need a size XL in anything but Plum Heather, or you want the cheapest merino sock and will never file a claim.
Reasons to consider it
- 59% merino, 39% nylon, 2% spandex knit in Darn Tough's own Vermont mill
- Terry-loop cushion underfoot with reinforced Achilles and a seamless toe closure
- Unconditional lifetime replacement with no receipt required, plus 90 days of free returns on worn socks
The compromises
- Midweight full cushion is warm for a summer sock; Darn Tough's Light Hiker exists for that
- Size XL is offered in one of the seven colors, and Sage was down to three pairs in small
- Claiming on the guarantee means washing, packing and paying to mail the socks before a credit code arrives
What we have not verified: No pair was worn for this review; how many miles the terry cushion lasts, whether the cuff stays up on a narrow calf, and real claim turnaround times were not assessed. The per-pair weights of 86 to 97 grams come from Shopify shipping data, not a product specification.

Women's Hiker Micro Crew Midweight Hiking Socks · 1903, Glacier
A 7.5-inch midweight micro crew in a 59% merino blend with full-foot terry cushion, a seamless toe, seven colors, and a replacement guarantee with no expiry and no receipt.
Before you buy: Warm for hot-weather hiking, thin on XL sizing, and the guarantee asks you to pay outbound postage and wait for a credit code.

Merino at 59% is the fiber that manages moisture and smell; nylon at 39% is what stops the heel from wearing through, and the 2% spandex is what keeps the cuff up. Those proportions are unremarkable for a midweight hiking sock and slightly lower in wool than the men's 1466, which Darn Tough lists at 61% merino and 36% nylon. Nobody will feel a two-point difference; the number is here so you know the two cuts are not identical knits.
Cushion, in Darn Tough's vocabulary, means terry loops instead of a flat jersey knit, and Darn Tough's analogy is carpet against hardwood. On the 1903 the loops run under the whole foot with extra protection over the ankle bone and the Achilles, and the toe seam is closed with a linking method the brand calls True Seamless. The knit is midweight, which Darn Tough labels all-season; translated, it is the sock for spring, fall and cool summits, and heavier than you want on a July lowland trail.
A 7.5-inch cuff and a size chart that stops early
The women's micro crew averages 7.5 inches from heel to cuff, an inch shorter than the men's 8.5, and Darn Tough says to expect about 5 inches of sock above a low hiking shoe or a cuff that just clears a standard boot. The women's size chart maps S to US women's 4.5 to 7, M to 7.5 to 9.5, L to 10 to 11.5 and XL to 12 to 14, with men's, EU and UK equivalents alongside. A women's 12 can also buy the men's 1466 in size M, which covers the same feet with a taller cuff.
Availability thins at the ends. Seven colors are listed, Plum Heather, Sage, Slate, Glacier, Eclipse, Light Denim and Bark, and all are $26, but XL exists only in Plum Heather, and the Sage colorway showed three pairs left in small when checked. Shopify's shipping data puts a pair at 86 grams in S rising to 97 grams in XL, figures Darn Tough's own listing does not state and which are best treated as approximate.
What the lifetime promise asks of you
Darn Tough's guarantee is unconditional in the plain sense: no receipt, no time limit, and since May 21, 2024 no exclusion for accidental damage, with only socks sold as seconds or irregulars left out. The claim itself is a six-step process. You fill in the online form, wash the socks, pack them with the form, and ship them yourself using the cheapest method available, which the brand suggests is USPS Ground Advantage. Once the pair is processed, an email carries a credit code for the full replacement value, spendable on darntough.com, and the replacement pair then ships free.
So the guarantee is real, but it is not free, and it is not instant. A claim costs you a mailer, postage, and however long processing plus a return shipment takes, and the credit is store credit, not cash. Some retailers offer in-store swaps for anyone who cannot wait, and the brand has a separate contact route for people mid thru-hike. Orders on darntough.com ship only to US addresses and leave the mill in one to two business days, with ground shipping free above the stated threshold of $50.
Ninety days to change your mind, worn or not
Separate from the guarantee, socks bought directly from Darn Tough get free return shipping for 90 days counted from the day the order was placed, and Darn Tough states outright that worn and washed pairs qualify. That is the mechanism to use for a fit problem, since it refunds or exchanges without the claim form. Gifts bought on the site in the holiday season stretch to 120 days. Pairs bought from another retailer fall back on that store's own terms or on the lifetime guarantee.
Care is simple and worth following, because the guarantee replaces socks but not the time you spend claiming. Machine wash cold on gentle with the socks inside out, no bleach, tumble on low or hang, and never dry clean. Washing inside out keeps the terry loops from pilling against zippers and hook-and-loop closures in the same load, which is how a good hiking sock most often starts to look tired before it fails.
Skip it if summer is your season
Pass on the 1903 if most of your hiking happens in heat. A midweight sock with cushion under the whole foot holds warmth by design, and Darn Tough sells a lightweight Light Hiker in the same height for that job. Look elsewhere when your feet fall outside the chart: women's sizes above 11.5 get one color, and anyone smaller than a 4.5 is out of range entirely.
Also pass if you are buying on price alone. At $26 a pair, the sock is only economical if you would actually use the replacement guarantee, and using it means washing, packing and mailing socks at your own cost, then waiting for a code. If that sounds like more effort than buying another pair of $12 socks, the cheaper socks are the better purchase for you. If it sounds like a fair trade for never shopping for boot socks again, this is the pair to start with.
