FLINTAN is IKEA's entry-level proper office chair, the one that sits below MARKUS on the price list and above the swivel chairs that are really dining chairs on casters. The black version without armrests is $99.99 on ikea.com in the US. It has a high polyester mesh back, a padded seat with a removable washable cover, a synchronized tilt mechanism with a lock, and five casters that brake when the seat is empty so the chair does not roll away when you stand up.
What stands out is the paperwork. IKEA tests FLINTAN to the ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 office seating standard, rates it for a 276 lb user, marks it contract grade, and covers it under the same ten-year office chair term as MARKUS, which costs $299.99. On those three numbers the chairs are identical. The differences show up in the height of the back, the presence of a headrest, and what you have to bolt on yourself.
Our verdict
A $99.99 task chair with the load rating, tilt mechanism and ten-year term of chairs costing three times as much; it lacks a headrest and ships without armrests, and that is nearly the whole compromise.
- A good fit for
- A home office where a full workday happens in the chair, the budget is a hundred dollars, and a mesh back matters more than a headrest.
- We would skip it if
- You want a headrest, you are tall enough to need a 55-inch back, or you need armrests out of the box and do not want to add $20 for them.
Reasons to consider it
- Tested for 276 lb to ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 and sold as contract grade, same rating as MARKUS
- Synchronized tilt with lock and automatic tension, plus lumbar support and a 5-inch seat height range
- Removable seat cover that goes in a warm machine wash; casters lock when the chair is empty
The compromises
- No headrest and a 44 7/8 in maximum height, against 55 1/8 in on MARKUS
- Armrests are an add-on pair at $20, which puts the complete chair at $119.99
- Lumbar support and tilt tension are automatic, so there is little to dial in for an unusual body
What we have not verified: No FLINTAN was sat in or assembled for this review. Seat firmness, how the mesh holds tension after a year, caster behavior on hard floors, and assembly time were not assessed.
The things in this guide
A closer look at the products, who they may suit, and what to check before buying.

FLINTAN office chair, black
Synchronized tilt with lock, automatic tension, lumbar support, a 17 3/4 to 22 7/8 in seat range, a washable cover, self-braking casters and a 276 lb rating, all for $99.99 with ten years on the frame and moving parts.
Before you buy: No headrest, no armrests unless you add the $20 pair, and the automatic lumbar and tension cannot be tuned.
Price checked September 11, 2026. Retailer prices can change.Synchronized tilt, automatic tension, one lock
The mechanism is the reason FLINTAN counts as an office chair and not a swivel chair. The seat and back recline together in a synchronized tilt, the resistance adjusts itself to the sitter's weight instead of using a knob, and a tilt lock holds the chair upright when you want it fixed. Lumbar support is built into the mesh back at a fixed position. Seat height runs from 17 3/4 to 22 7/8 inches with a gas cylinder, which covers most desks including a sit-stand desk parked at sitting height.
What is missing is the ability to tune any of that. There is no tension dial, no depth slider, no lumbar height adjustment and no headrest. For a person of average build who wants to sit down and work, automatic is fine; for someone with a specific back complaint, a chair with manual controls is a safer bet. IKEA's care notes list the KOLON floor protector as a compatible accessory, and the casters carry a braking function so the chair stays put when unoccupied.
Where the $200 goes on MARKUS
MARKUS, which this site reviews separately, is the natural point of reference and the numbers are unusually easy to line up. Both chairs are tested for 276 lb. Both are sold as contract grade. Both carry ten years under IKEA's office chair terms. The price is $99.99 against $299.99, so IKEA is charging $200 for the parts that differ: MARKUS has a headrest, comes with armrests, uses a manually adjustable tilt tension, and stands 50 3/4 to 55 1/8 inches tall against FLINTAN's 44 7/8 inch maximum.
Seat dimensions favor MARKUS slightly, at 20 7/8 by 18 1/2 inches versus 18 1/8 by 19 1/4 on FLINTAN, and the seat height ranges overlap almost completely. FLINTAN's armrests are an add-on: IKEA lists a matching pair for $20 and a bundled chair-with-armrests listing at $119.99, so the fair comparison is $119.99 to $299.99. The package weights tell the same story, 32 lb 5 oz for FLINTAN and 49 lb 6 oz for MARKUS. If the headrest and the taller back are not things you will use, the cheaper chair is not a lesser chair on paper.
Recycled polyester, a wood seat frame, and a cover that washes
The back is a steel frame with a powder-coated finish carrying 100% polyester mesh. The seat is layer-glued wood veneer topped with polyurethane foam and a 100% polyester fabric that IKEA says is at least 90% recycled. The base and legs are the same steel with a powder-coat finish. None of that is exotic, and it matches what MARKUS uses for its seat frame and foam, with MARKUS adding a fabric back instead of mesh.
The seat cover is removable and washable, which is rare at this price and useful for anyone who eats at the desk. The washing instructions read machine wash warm on a normal cycle, no bleach, no tumble dry, iron at medium if you must. The frame wipes clean with mild soapy water. There is no note about the mesh back beyond the frame instructions, so treat it as wipe-only.
Ten years on frame and moving parts, receipt required
FLINTAN is on IKEA's named list of chairs under its ten-year office chair limited warranty, alongside MARKUS, ALEFJÄLL and the rest. Coverage is for the structural frame and the moving parts: casters, gas cylinder, mechanism, armrests and back rest. It is valid for residential and commercial use, which is the practical meaning of contract grade. It does not cover wear, cuts, scratches, impact damage, wrong cleaning, or a chair kept outdoors or in a humid room, and the receipt must be shown. Claims go to the local store or the IKEA US support line.
For returns, IKEA's US terms allow 365 days on new, unopened items and 180 days on opened ones, refunded in the same form of payment used, with receipt and a government photo ID. Delivery matters for a 32 lb box: small order shipping caps at 50 lb, so FLINTAN qualifies, while large item delivery starts at $29 for non-members and $19 for IKEA Family members, with higher floors in some states. Buying in store and carrying it out is the cheap route, and the box is 30 inches long.
Skip it for a headrest or for manual controls
Pass on FLINTAN if you lean back to think and want something behind your head; the back tops out at 44 7/8 inches and there is no headrest option. MARKUS at $299.99 or a chair from another maker with a proper neck support is the answer there. Also pass if experience has taught you that a fixed lumbar bump in the wrong spot ruins a chair for you, because nothing on FLINTAN moves it.
Armrests are the other reason to hesitate. If you type with elbows supported, budget for the $20 pair or buy the $119.99 bundle, and accept that at that point the chair is a fifth more expensive than the headline price. The remaining case against it is the one that applies to every chair bought online: seat firmness and mesh feel are personal, and a 180-day window on an opened return is IKEA's way of admitting it.
