IKEA's US listing for the KNARREVIK nightstand in black, article 205.699.77, gives a price of $14.99, three measurements, a two-word material line and a care note. It does not give a maximum load. That number, 10 kg (22 lb), is on page two of assembly document AA-2547698-1, printed under a warning triangle in 34 languages and paired with an instruction not to sit on the table. A shopper who never opens the PDF buys the table without ever seeing the only structural figure IKEA publishes for it.
The gap matters because the KNARREVIK is a steel frame, and steel invites assumptions: it is easy to picture one under a speaker or a game console. IKEA's own document says 22 lb. This article puts the listing, the assembly booklet and the care sheet next to one another, compares the footprint with the STORKLINTA nightstand and 2-drawer chest that sit next to it in the same catalog, and closes with the cases where a $14.99 open frame is the wrong buy.
Our verdict
A sensible $14.99 bedside table for a lamp, a phone and a stack of paperbacks. IKEA's 22 lb ceiling rules out a printer, a speaker cabinet or anyone sitting on it, and the open frame has no drawer.
- A good fit for
- A small bedroom, a dorm or a guest room that needs a narrow 16 1/2 inch table with one open shelf, assembled with the included hex key and moved by one hand.
- We would skip it if
- The top will carry more than 22 lb, you want a closed drawer for medication or a charger tangle, or the bare edges and visible bolt heads of a powder-coated frame bother you.
Reasons to consider it
- IKEA prints a hard load figure, 10 kg (22 lb), in the assembly booklet, which most tables at this price omit entirely
- Steel throughout with a powder coat, no particleboard, and an 8 lb 8 oz package one person carries
- Sixteen screws, one hex key and a six-step booklet; the listing wording gives the frame no welded joints to align
The compromises
- The 22 lb ceiling and the warning against sitting on it appear only in the PDF, so a buyer reading the listing sees no limit at all
- Open shelf and open sides: nothing hides, and the 13 1/4 inch depth is shallower than the STORKLINTA nightstand's 18 7/8 inches
- Flat steel edges and bolt heads are part of the design, and the booklet's only alignment check is a square-frame diagram on its last page
What we have not verified: No KNARREVIK was assembled, loaded or measured for this article; the load limit is IKEA's own figure from the assembly document, the edge finish and how square the frame assembles were not checked, and the $14.99 price was checked on one date, September 11, 2026.

KNARREVIK Nightstand
For $14.99 the KNARREVIK delivers a 16 1/2 by 13 1/4 inch top, one open shelf, a powder-coated steel frame and a published load figure, all in an 8 lb 8 oz package that assembles with the included hex key.
Before you buy: No drawer, no door, no anchoring hardware and a load limit that the listing never states; the flat steel edges and bolt heads are part of the look.

Page two of AA-2547698-1 carries a warning triangle and, in the English block, two lines: "WARNING – Delicate table - Do not sit on the product." and "WARNING – Delicate table - Do not place heavy objects on this product, maximum load 10 kg (22 lb)." The same pair repeats across pages two through four in French, Spanish, German, Chinese, Japanese and the rest of IKEA's language set. There is no tip-over warning and no wall-anchoring step; the booklet treats the KNARREVIK as a table, not as storage furniture, and ships no anti-tip device.
The listing on ikea.com/us has no maximum-load line under Measurements, where IKEA prints one for tables such as the LACK. Its only structural statement is a compliance sentence: the table "has been tested for light, non-domestic use and meets the requirements for safety, durability and stability set forth in the following standard: EN 15372." A buyer who reads only the sales page therefore learns that the table passed a furniture standard and nothing about how much it is rated to hold. The 22 lb figure is the number to budget for, and it is the same ceiling IKEA gives the paper-cored LACK.
Published measurements, the steel frame and the care notes
IKEA lists the KNARREVIK at 16 1/2 inches wide by 13 1/4 inches deep by 20 1/2 inches high, which puts the top at roughly the height of a standard mattress on a low platform bed. The material line reads, in full, "Steel, Epoxy/polyester powder coating," with no separate entries for the top, the shelf or the legs; the listing's product copy describes a metal bar construction without welded joints. The only note under the listing's care and information block beyond cleaning is the indoor-only line, which for a powder-coated steel frame reads as a corrosion caveat rather than a strength one.
The care sheet, AA-2180177-2-2, is a single page in 30-odd languages and asks for two steps: wipe with a cloth dampened in a mild cleaner, then wipe dry with a clean cloth. The listing repeats the same two lines. No touch-up instructions are given for chipped powder coat, and the documents do not say whether the top and shelf are solid sheet or folded stock. Because the material line names only steel, the shelf is metal like the top, not a wood insert; neither document says how the cut edges of the flat pieces are finished.
An 8 lb 8 oz box, sixteen screws and one hex key
The KNARREVIK ships as one package measuring 21 1/2 by 13 3/4 by 1 1/2 inches and weighing 8 lb 8 oz, which is about a fifth of the STORKLINTA chest's 44 lb 12 oz carton for a unit of nearly the same height. The assembly booklet, revised 2024-08-08, runs 12 pages; page six inventories the hardware as one hex key, part 100006, and 16 identical screws, parts 10118490 and 10118469. No drill, no wall plug and no second person are shown.
Steps one through five bolt the side rails to the top and shelf panels two or four screws at a time, with the frame flipped between steps, and step six is a final pass tightening all 16 screws by hand with the hex key. The last page shows a square frame beside a crossed-out leaning one, which is the booklet's only alignment check. Comparing the two diagonals before that final pass is the practical way to use it, since the tightened screws lock in whatever shape the frame has, and a leg that rocks on a flat floor shows up best at that stage.
How it sits beside the STORKLINTA nightstand and 2-drawer chest
IKEA's US nightstand category files the $14.99 KNARREVIK next to the $59.99 STORKLINTA one-drawer nightstand and the $79.99 STORKLINTA 2-drawer chest. The STORKLINTA units are painted particleboard with fiberboard backs, enclosed drawers and an anti-tip kit in the box; the KNARREVIK is an open steel frame with a shelf and no anchoring hardware. Footprints differ too: the KNARREVIK is 16 1/2 by 13 1/4 inches, the one-drawer STORKLINTA 15 3/4 by 18 7/8 inches, and the chest 19 5/8 by 18 7/8 inches, so the KNARREVIK is the narrowest front to back by more than five inches.
The comparison cuts both ways on documentation. IKEA publishes no drawer or top load for either STORKLINTA piece, while the KNARREVIK has its 22 lb figure in the assembly PDF. Against that, the STORKLINTA drawers close over their contents and their booklets include wall plugs and screws. A buyer choosing between the three is trading a stated load limit and a light, tool-included build on one side against enclosed storage and 45 to 65 dollars more on the other.
When to skip it
Skip the KNARREVIK if the top will hold anything near or over 22 lb: a bookshelf speaker pair, a compact printer, a heavy tabletop lamp with a ceramic base, or a person sitting down to put on socks. IKEA's warning says not to sit on it, and the 10 kg figure is IKEA's own published line, not an estimate. Pass on it as well if you want a drawer, since the open shelf shows everything on it and there is no accessory in the series that adds one.
It is also the wrong pick for a damp room or a covered porch, because the listing restricts it to indoor use, and for anyone bothered by exposed bolt heads and sharp-cornered flat stock, which the design does not hide. For a light bedside table that assembles with the included key, weighs 8 lb 8 oz and states its own load limit, the $14.99 price is hard to argue with, and the listing's return line allows a year for a full refund.
