The POÄNG armchair on IKEA's US site is article 593.059.28 at $149.00 in the birch veneer frame with the Knisa light beige cushion, the lowest-priced fabric combination in the current armchair range. It ships as two flat packs: a frame, article 813.058.07, that IKEA prices at $105.00 alone, and a chair cushion, article 604.661.71, at $44.00. The combination price equals the two parts added together, so there is no discount for buying them as a set at the online price. The frame is a layer-glued birch veneer bent into a cantilever, with a clear lacquer finish and a polypropylene fabric sling; the cushion is polyurethane foam of 2.0 lb per cubic foot under a polyester cover.
IKEA's copy leads with the bentwood's resilience and the high back's neck support, and the page records a 4.5 star average from 1,563 customer reviews. What the copy does not lead with is the cushion's care label, which is where this review spends its time: the Knisa cover is marked do not wash and do not dry clean. For a $16.99 LACK side table that would not matter; for a chair whose seat is a fabric-covered foam slab, it decides who the chair suits.
Our verdict
A cantilevered, layer-glued birch frame with a high back, sold as combination 593.059.28 for $149.00 and made of a frame (813.058.07, $105.00) and a Knisa cushion (604.661.71, $44.00) that IKEA also prices on their own. The frame is the durable part: tested to 242 lb, a ten-year promise, and a bounce that comes from the bentwood itself. The Knisa cushion is the weak part, since IKEA's care label for it says do not wash, and the only cleaning it permits is vacuuming and wiping.
- A good fit for
- A reading corner or bedroom where a light, high-backed chair with some give in the seat matters more than a plush recliner, and where the cushion will stay clean enough that vacuuming and a wipe are the only cleaning it will ever need.
- We would skip it if
- Pets, small children or food will meet the cushion, because the Knisa cover cannot go in a washer or to a dry cleaner; you need a chair that stays put when rocked; or you expect the seat height of 16 1/2 inches to suit a tall frame without an ottoman.
Reasons to consider it
- The frame is layer-glued birch veneer under clear lacquer, and IKEA states it is tested to strength and durability standards that simulate use by people up to 242 lb
- Frame and cushion are separate article numbers with separate prices, so a worn or stained cushion can be replaced for $44.00 without buying a new chair
- IKEA covers POÄNG frames and cushions for ten years against faults in material and build, provided IKEA's care guidance was followed
The compromises
- The Knisa light beige cushion's care label lists do not wash, do not bleach, do not tumble dry, do not iron and do not dry clean; vacuuming and wiping are the only cleaning IKEA allows
- At 18 lb 1 oz for the frame pack the chair is light, and one customer review IKEA publishes on the listing reports it creeping across the floor when rocked hard
- The seat sits 16 1/2 inches off the floor with a 19 5/8 inch depth, which is low and shallow for a tall sitter, and the matching ottoman adds $80.00
What we have not verified: We have not sat in this chair, assembled it or cleaned the cushion. IKEA's US page does not state a maximum user weight, only that testing simulates use by people up to 242 lb; it does not list the assembled weight, the number of assembly steps or an assembly time, and it does not say what fabric the older washable POÄNG covers used. Whether the birch veneer finish darkens with light is not addressed on the page.
The things in this guide
A closer look at the products, who they may suit, and what to check before buying.

POÄNG Armchair, birch veneer/Knisa light beige
The frame side of the purchase is well documented: birch veneer under lacquer, tested to 242 lb, a ten-year promise of coverage, and priced on its own at $105.00 so the cushion can be swapped later.
Before you buy: The $44.00 Knisa cushion is the part that touches the sitter and the part IKEA says cannot be washed or dry cleaned, so budget for a replacement cushion or pick a cover with a different care label.

IKEA sells this chair three ways. The combination, 593.059.28, is $149.00 and lands as two packages. The frame alone, 813.058.07, is $105.00 and arrives in a single flat pack 29 inches long, 26 1/4 wide and 2 3/4 thick that weighs 18 lb 1 oz. The cushion alone, 604.661.71, is $44.00 and comes rolled, 23 1/4 inches long and 9 3/4 in diameter, at 3 lb 14 oz. Add $105.00 to $44.00 and you get $149.00, so the set price is a convenience and not a saving.
Both component pages carry an IKEA Family in-store price, $69.00 for the frame and $30.00 for the cushion, marked valid from Sep 8 through Dec 24, 2026. Those two figures add to $99.00, a third off the online combination price, but only for a member collecting in a store. Anyone ordering delivery pays the $149.00. The split pricing has a second use: the cushion is the part that wears, and it can be rebought later on its own, or exchanged for one of the other POÄNG cushion fabrics, which IKEA's US product search prices from $44.00 up to $194.00 for the Grann golden brown.
What the frame is made of and what IKEA tested it to
IKEA lists the back crossbar, seat crossbar, rail, backrest frame, seat frame and armrest frame as layer-glued wood veneer in birch with a clear lacquer, and the sling that carries the cushion as 100 percent polypropylene with at least 30 percent recycled content. The shape is a cantilever, which is why the chair flexes when you sit down; there are no springs. Overall the assembled chair is 26 3/4 inches wide, 32 1/4 deep and 39 3/8 tall with the cushion on, with a seat 22 inches wide, 19 5/8 deep and 16 1/2 off the floor.
Under the safety and compliance heading IKEA describes the seating is tested to strength and durability standards that simulate typical use by people weighing up to 242 lb, and the frame page adds that the test is EN 12520 for domestic use. Read that as a test condition, not a rated capacity: IKEA publishes no maximum user weight for POÄNG. The frame is one of the products named in the seating section of IKEA's US warranty page, which promises ten years of protection for frames and for seat and back cushions used with their intended frames, for residential use, with the original receipt, and with its care guidance followed.
The Knisa cushion: 40,000 abrasion cycles and a do-not-wash label
The cushion is a single piece 52 3/8 inches long, 22 1/2 wide and 2 thick, filled with polyurethane foam at 2.0 lb per cubic foot with a polyester wadding on top and a polypropylene lining underneath. The cover fabric is 100 percent polyester with at least 90 percent recycled content. IKEA reports the cover survived 40,000 abrasion cycles, against a threshold it gives as 15,000 for everyday home furniture and 30,000 for a good result, and a lightfastness of 5 to 6 on an 8-point scale where 4 counts as fine for home use. On those two numbers the fabric is above average for the price.
Then comes the care block on the cushion's own page: do not wash, do not bleach, do not tumble dry, do not iron, do not dry clean, vacuum clean, wipe clean with a moistened cloth. The armchair page shortens this to vacuum and wipe. Older POÄNG covers were removable and washable, and one customer reviewer quoted on IKEA's page recalls machine washing a cover bought around 2006 and fighting the foam back in; another complains about the same job. The Knisa cushion sold today is not that design. A spill that a wipe cannot lift is a $44.00 cushion, and since IKEA's warranty conditions exclude damage from wrong cleaning methods, washing it anyway is a risk the buyer carries alone.
Assembly, weight and the creep that some reviewers report
The frame's assembly guide, AA-2615392-2, runs 16 pages of pictures with a hardware inventory of screws, fittings and caps in counts of 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8, and IKEA gives no time estimate for it. Several of the customer reviews published on the listing call assembly straightforward; one describes trying to drive the wide-thread screws into the narrow-thread holes before rereading the sheet, and two report holes that did not line up on their frame, one of them badly enough that the arm could not be fitted. IKEA does not publish an assembled weight, but the frame pack is 18 lb 1 oz and the cushion pack 3 lb 14 oz, so the finished chair is under 22 lb.
That low weight is the reason the chair is easy to carry to another room, and the reason one reviewer who bought it for a nursery reports it migrating across the floor while being rocked with a baby. The cantilever bounces; it is not a rocker with runners, and the page does not claim to be one, but people do buy it as one. On a hard floor a light chair that flexes will walk. IKEA's US search lists a POÄNG rocking chair as a separate product at $299.00 for a buyer who actually wants the rocking motion, which is double the armchair's price.
When to skip it
Skip this combination if the cushion will meet anything that a vacuum and a wipe cannot remove. That covers households with pets that shed onto light beige, toddlers with cups, and anyone who eats in the chair. The cover is not removable for washing and the label forbids dry cleaning, so a stained Knisa cushion is a $44.00 replacement or a permanent mark. Choosing a darker POÄNG cushion helps with visibility, but check its own care block before assuming it can be washed.
Move on as well if the seat geometry is wrong for you. At 16 1/2 inches high and 19 5/8 deep the seat is lower and shorter than a typical sofa cushion, and the head bolster that one reviewer praises is the same one another calls unbearable; sitting in it at a store settles that faster than any page can. If rocking is the point, this is the wrong POÄNG. And if the plan is armchair plus ottoman, the $80.00 ottoman lifts the outlay to $229.00, the same figure IKEA puts on the armchair-and-ottoman set in this fabric, so buy it as the set or not at all.
