IKEA SKUBB Box Set Review: Nine Dollars Of Drawer Order, If The Drawer Cooperates

Six soft polyester boxes in three sizes for $8.99, built to sort socks and underwear inside a drawer. The catch is that the footprints were drawn for IKEA's own furniture, and the fabric cannot go in the wash.

THE SHORT VERSION

SKUBB is the IKEA name for a family of soft polyester storage, and the six-box set is its entry point: two boxes each of three footprints, 5½ by 5½ inches, 11 by 5½ inches and 11 by 11 inches, all 5⅛ inches high, for $8.99 in white. The fabric is 100% polyester with at least 90% recycled content, stiffened with polypropylene inserts, and each box has a zipper in its base so it can be opened and flattened when it is not needed.

IKEA pitches the set for socks, underwear, belts and accessories in a wardrobe or chest of drawers, with the bathroom as a second home. The question is fit, in two senses: whether three fixed footprints match the drawers you own, and whether a fabric box that cannot be washed suits what you plan to put in it. IKEA's own product data, care notes and returns wording answer most of that; the rest is measuring the drawer.

Our verdict

The lowest-cost credible way to divide a dresser drawer, with a fold-flat trick most rivals lack; measure your drawer against the three footprints first, because the boxes will not squeeze to fit.

A good fit for
A household sorting socks, underwear, belts or kids' clothes inside dresser drawers, especially IKEA drawers, at the lowest possible cost per box.
We would skip it if
You need lids, a washable organizer, or boxes to fit a drawer whose interior does not divide into multiples of 5½ inches.

Reasons to consider it

  • Six boxes for $8.99, two each of three footprints that tile together at a shared 5⅛-inch height
  • Zipper in the base lets each box fold flat for storage when a drawer is reorganized
  • Fabric is 100% polyester with at least 90% recycled content, and the set holds a 4.8-star average across more than 7,500 IKEA customer reviews

The compromises

  • Care is vacuum or lint roller only; IKEA says do not wash, bleach, tumble dry, iron or dry clean
  • No lids, so the set is for drawers and shelves, not stacking or dust protection
  • Fixed footprints: a customer reviewing on IKEA's site reports the boxes run about half an inch too wide to pair inside HEMNES drawers

What we have not verified: The boxes were not handled here; how stiff the polypropylene inserts are, how well the fabric resists pilling from repeated sock traffic, and whether the base zippers hold up were not assessed.

Three footprints that tile, on a 5½-inch grid

The set's geometry is its whole idea. Two small boxes at 5½ by 5½ inches, two medium at 11 by 5½, two large at 11 by 11, all 5⅛ inches tall. Put one large next to two smalls and you have an 11 by 16½ inch block; two mediums set front to back make another 11 by 11. IKEA's own drawer systems are drawn on compatible modules, which is why several customer reviewers on the IKEA store page mention KOMPLEMENT wardrobe drawers as a perfect fit.

Other furniture is where the plan can fail. One customer review on IKEA's page complains the boxes come out about half an inch too wide to sit a large beside a small in a HEMNES drawer, and that forcing them skews the fabric. IKEA also offers a separate SKUBB set of three at $7.99 that it says is dimensioned for GULLABERG and STORKLINTA chests, which confirms that fit is drawer-specific even inside IKEA's own range. Measure the drawer interior and check it against multiples of 5½ inches with a little slack; if the numbers do not work, no amount of squeezing will.

Recycled polyester you can vacuum but not wash

The shell is 100% polyester with a minimum 90% recycled content, and IKEA fits polypropylene inserts to hold the walls square. The care line is restrictive for a fabric product: clean by vacuuming or with a lint roller, and do not wash, bleach, tumble dry, iron or dry clean. That rules the boxes out for anything that might leak, stain or carry a smell, and it means a box that catches a spill in a bathroom cabinet is likely a box you throw away.

For the intended job the restriction matters less than it reads. Socks and underwear go into a drawer clean, and lint and dust are what accumulate, which a vacuum nozzle handles. The design credit goes to Monika Mulder, and the base zipper is her useful detail: open it and the box lies flat, so a set bought for one apartment can be packed into the 21¾ by 5¼ by 1½ inch, 16-ounce carton it came in and reused later. Customers in IKEA's reviews say they have bought the set repeatedly across years, for dressers, camper storage and nursery carts.

Under nine dollars, and what a lid would cost you

At $8.99 the set works out to about $1.50 per box, which is the figure to hold in your head when comparing any rigid or lidded organizer. The IKEA store page shows a 4.8-star average from 7,560 reviews, and the most common wish in the critical ones is for lids, which the SKUBB box does not have. That is a design choice, not an oversight; the boxes are open dividers meant to live inside a closed drawer, where a lid would only get in the way of reaching in.

The three-box SKUBB set at $7.99 is the near neighbor, and it exists because the six-box footprints do not suit every IKEA chest. Both sets are the same fabric and care regime. Only white is offered in the six-box set on the IKEA store page, so a color-matched drawer interior is not an option here. If you want dust protection, stacking on an open shelf, or a wipe-clean surface, the answer is a different product category, and it will cost several times as much per box.

Returns: a year unopened, six months opened

IKEA's US policy is generous enough to make the fit gamble cheap. New and unopened products can be returned within 365 days with a receipt and refunded in full, and opened products within 180 days on the same terms, with refunds issued to the original form of payment. You will need the receipt and a government-issued photo ID, and IKEA records the ID in a database used to authorize returns. Items that come back modified, dirty, stained or damaged are refused, which for a fabric box that cannot be washed means keeping it clean until you are sure.

In practice, that means you can buy the six-box set, open it, try the footprints in your drawers, and take it back if the tiling does not work, as long as the boxes are still presentable. IKEA's item page also notes a Low Price Guarantee tied to the IKEA Family program that refunds the difference if the price drops in the following 90 days, though on an $8.99 item the practical value is small.

Skip it when lids or a wash cycle matter

Set the SKUBB boxes aside if the contents are anything other than dry textiles and accessories. A drawer of toiletries, craft paint, pet supplies or anything that leaks wants a rigid plastic bin that wipes clean, and the vacuum-only care rule makes fabric the wrong material for that job. The same goes for open shelving, where dust settles into an open box and a lid is the point.

Also skip it if a quick measurement shows the drawer interior does not divide into 5½-inch multiples with slack. Reviewers who love the set are overwhelmingly fitting it into IKEA furniture; the one detailed complaint among IKEA's US reviews is about a different IKEA chest where the math falls half an inch short. For a KOMPLEMENT, PAX or similar drawer full of socks, though, the price is hard to argue with, and the fold-flat bases mean the set survives your next reorganization.
