IKEA STORKLINTA 2-Drawer Chest Review: The Anti-Tip Kit Is Part of the Assembly

A $79.99 nightstand-height chest whose assembly PDF opens with a tip-over warning and a wall-anchoring step; the listing itself never mentions either.

THE SHORT VERSION

Searching ikea.com/us/en for a MALM 2-drawer chest in September 2026 returns no such product. The old article URLs answer with a 404, the MALM series page lists beds, a dressing table and underbed boxes, and the chests of drawers in the bedroom sets now carry the STORKLINTA name beside MALM. The nightstand-height member of that series is the STORKLINTA 2-drawer chest in white, article 905.592.96, at $79.99 on the listing re-checked on October 4, 2026.

What sets this unit apart from a generic bedside box is buried in the assembly instructions, not the sales copy. Page two of the 24-page PDF is a tip-over warning in three languages, and page 17 covers the wall plugs and screws shipped in the box. The listing above it talks about integrated handles and a glass top. The anchoring requirement, the published measurements and the missing load figure have to be weighed together.

Our verdict

A reasonable $79.99 nightstand for a buyer who will drill the wall anchor on assembly day and does not need a stated drawer load; a weak choice for a renter who cannot anchor, or for drawers holding files or tools.

A good fit for
A bedroom with a wall stud or a drywall anchor within reach of the headboard, an owner who plans to install the supplied anti-tip device, and a load of books, chargers and bedside clutter.
We would skip it if
You cannot or will not fasten furniture to the wall, you need a published drawer weight limit, or you want the MALM chest that no longer appears on the US site and expect its dimensions.

Reasons to consider it

  • Assembly instructions include the anti-tip device, the wall plugs and the screws, so anchoring needs no extra purchase
  • Enclosed two-drawer box with 16 1/8 by 15 3/4 inch drawer interiors at nightstand height
  • Optional $25.00 glass top in the same 19 5/8 by 18 7/8 inch footprint protects the painted surface

The compromises

  • No maximum load is published for the drawers or the top, so the buyer guesses
  • One 44 lb 12 oz flat-pack and a 24-page instruction booklet with drawer rails that reviewers say fit either way
  • Buyer reviews filed against the product split on assembly, some describing misaligned drawer holes

What we have not verified: Drawer runner type, the anchoring bracket design and the finish durability come from the assembly PDF and the sales copy alone. The search that found no MALM chest on the US site was run on one date, and the load behavior of a particleboard drawer bottom is not something either page answers.

IKEA STORKLINTA 2-Drawer Chest
Buy it as a nightstand you will anchor, not as a chest of drawers

STORKLINTA 2-Drawer Chest

At $79.99 the unit delivers two enclosed drawers at 20 7/8 inches high, ships with its own anti-tip hardware, and takes a $25.00 glass top in the exact footprint.

Before you buy: IKEA publishes no drawer or top load, the 44 lb 12 oz package is a one-person struggle, and the maker's published instructions say the anti-tip device must always be installed.

The MALM chest is gone from the US site and this is the unit in its slot

A search of the IKEA US catalog for a MALM chest, a MALM 2-drawer chest and a MALM nightstand returned STORKLINTA dressers, the STORKLINTA nightstand and bedroom sets labeled MALM / STORKLINTA, plus MALM beds and the MALM dressing table. The two legacy MALM chest product addresses return 404. The MALM series page itself lists bed frames, storage beds, a dressing table and underbed boxes, with no chest of drawers among them.

The STORKLINTA 2-drawer chest is filed under Nightstands on the site, and its listing text calls it a bedside table with two drawers. IKEA's own copy suggests pairing it with a bed from GLADSTAD, SLATTUM or MALM, which is the closest the site comes to naming it as the MALM chest's successor. Buyers arriving with the old MALM dimensions in mind should note the new footprint of 19 5/8 by 18 7/8 inches and a height of 20 7/8 inches before ordering.

The manufacturer's tip-over warning, quoted without softening

Page two of assembly document AA-2413748-4 reads, in full for the English block: "WARNING. Children have died from furniture tipover. To reduce the risk of furniture tipover: ALWAYS install anti-tip device provided. NEVER put a TV on this product. NEVER allow children to stand, climb, or hang on any drawers, doors, or shelves. NEVER open more than one drawer at a time. Place heaviest items in the lowest drawers." The same text follows in French and Spanish. Page 17 adds: "The screw(s) and plug(s) supplied can be used with most solid (A) and hollow (B) walls. For solid wood (C) use the screw(s) without plug(s). If you are uncertain, seek professional advice."

IKEA's Safety at home page states the general rule the same way: "Are all bookcases, wardrobes, chest of drawers and other storage furniture secured to the wall? This is extremely important, even if you think your furniture won’t tip. Be sure to secure it to the wall." The wall anchoring guide it links matches the fastener to the wall: a screw into a wood stud, an 8 mm plug for drywall with no stud, a plug for solid masonry and a toggle for hollow masonry. Nothing about the 20 7/8 inch height exempts this unit; the instruction is to install the device, and the hardware for it is in the box.

Published measurements and what the drawers are made of

IKEA lists the chest at 19 5/8 inches wide, 18 7/8 inches deep and 20 7/8 inches high, with each drawer measuring 16 1/8 inches across and 15 3/4 inches deep inside. The top panel, side panels and drawer fronts are particleboard with acrylic paint and plastic edging; the plinth is the same stack; the back panel is fiberboard; the bottom is particleboard; drawer sides and backs are particleboard under plastic foil and paper foil; drawer bottoms are fiberboard with printed acrylic paint and paper foil.

Two figures a bedroom buyer would want are absent. The listing carries no maximum load for the drawers and none for the top, so a stack of hardbacks or a heavy lamp has no published ceiling. Care is limited to a damp cloth with mild cleaner and a dry wipe, which fits a painted particleboard surface that should not sit under standing water. The $25.00 STORKLINTA glass top, sold separately in the identical 19 5/8 by 18 7/8 inch footprint, is IKEA's answer to rings from a water glass.

One 44 lb 12 oz box and a 24-page booklet

The chest arrives as a single package measuring 27 3/4 by 19 1/4 by 4 3/4 inches and weighing 44 lb 12 oz, which is heavier than the assembled footprint suggests and worth planning a two-person carry for. The assembly PDF, revision dated April 8, 2025, runs 24 pages and opens with drill-size callouts of 5/16 inch and 1/8 inch and a hardware inventory listed by part number, wall plugs and screws included.

Customer reviews on the listing disagree on the build. Several praise a solid result in about an hour with a drill; others report drawer rails that fit either way and must be oriented with the wheel slot toward the top front, cam screws that are hard to back out once driven, and drawer holes that leave the drawer floating in the opening. That pattern is specific enough to warrant reading the rail step twice before committing.

When to skip it

Skip this chest if the wall behind the bed cannot take a fastener, whether because of a lease, a plaster wall with nothing behind it or a headboard that blocks the spot; the manufacturer's instruction to always install the anti-tip device leaves no unanchored configuration on the table. Leave it as well if the drawers will hold anything whose weight matters, because IKEA publishes no limit for them and there is no way to check a load against an unstated number.

A shopper who wants the old MALM chest's proportions should measure the 19 5/8 by 18 7/8 by 20 7/8 inch box against the space first, since the series swap changed the footprint along with the name. For a bedside table that will hold a lamp, a phone and paperbacks, on a wall that takes a screw, the $79.99 price and the included anchoring hardware make it a defensible buy; the listing’s 365-day full-refund return line is the fallback for a drawer that arrives misdrilled.
