Kelty Cosmic Down 20 Review: A 20°F Figure With No Named Test Method

Kelty's $189.95 Cosmic Down 20 carries 550-fill down at 2 lb 7 oz; the $109.95 Cosmic Synthetic 20 is 6 oz heavier, prints no test method either, and was sold out in Regular when checked.

A blue semi-rectangular sleeping bag laid flat and seen from above on a plain white background, with a dark navy diagonal panel across the chest carrying a gold Kelty triangle logo, an amber lining visible inside the hood opening, horizontal quilted baffles down the length of the bag, a zipper pull hanging low on the left side, and a soft shadow beneath it

THE SHORT VERSION

Kelty's Cosmic Down 20 is a 550-fill down bag in a semi-rectangular cut, and the Regular (SKU 35413724RR) was $189.95 on Kelty's own store on 2026-09-25, with Short at $179.95 and Long at $209.95; all three showed in stock. Its spec block prints one temperature for every size — 20°F / -7°C — and lists 16.4 oz of down, 2 lb 7 oz of total weight and an 8 by 13-inch stuff sack.

Beside it sits the Cosmic Synthetic 20, same 20 in the name, $109.95 in Regular and $119.95 in Long that day. Its spec block is just as bare: one temperature figure, no ISO or EN label. So the shared 20 does not decide between them: 6 oz of carried weight and close to half the packed volume on the down side, $80 on the synthetic side, and a rating whose meaning neither page pins down.

Our verdict

Buy the $189.95 Cosmic Down 20 Regular when 6 oz and roughly half the packed volume are worth $80 to you; if not, the $119.95 Cosmic Synthetic 20 Long is in stock and $90 under the down Long.

A good fit for
Campers buying a first three-season bag who carry it themselves and would pay $189.95 for 2 lb 7 oz and an 8 by 13-inch stuff sack rather than $119.95 for the heavier synthetic.
We would skip it if
Skip it when $120 is the ceiling, when an unlabeled 20°F is not enough to buy on, or when 6 oz and the packed size are not worth $80 to you.

Reasons to consider it

  • 550-fill down, 16.4 oz of it, keeps the Regular at 2 lb 7 oz against the Cosmic Synthetic 20's published 2 lb 13 oz
  • The published stuff sack is 8 by 13 inches against the synthetic's 9.5 by 18-inch stuffed size, which is 1.95 times the volume when each is treated as a cylinder
  • Kelty had all three sizes in stock on 2026-09-25 — Short at $179.95, Regular at $189.95, Long at $209.95 — where the synthetic's Regular was not

The compromises

  • The 20°F figure carries no ISO or EN label, and neither current Cosmic 20 listing does; the ISO-labeled Cosmic spec block still posted on a current listing is the sold-out prior-year Synthetic 40, at Comfort 37°F and Limit 27°F
  • $189.95 is $80 more than the Cosmic Synthetic 20's posted Regular price, which was sold out on the day of checking, and $90 more than the in-stock synthetic Long at $119.95
  • Kelty's own support article says unisex bags "often use the lower limit or survival rating", so the printed 20 may stand for a colder convention than a comfort figure, and neither page says which one it is

What we have not verified: No test method is named beside either 20, and none surfaced from an outside lab. Fill weight and fill power are separate measures, so 16.4 ounces of 550 down against 31.4 ounces of synthetic does not settle warmth. Kelty's store and Amazon's Regular listing, sold by Backcountry, both showed $189.95 on 2026-09-25.

Cosmic Down 20 Sleeping Bag · 35413724RR

Kelty listed the Regular at $189.95 on 2026-09-25, in stock, with 16.4 oz of 550-fill down, 2 lb 7 oz total and an 8 by 13-inch stuff sack — 6 oz under the Cosmic Synthetic 20 Regular's published 2 lb 13 oz, which was flagged sold out at $109.95.

Before you buy: The 20°F figure has no ISO or EN label, so it cannot be set against another maker's Comfort or Limit number; the $80 gap to the synthetic Regular matters on a first kit.

What a 20 means when neither page labels it

Kelty prints 20°F / -7°C on the down bag, filed under "All Sizes", and 20° / -7°C on the synthetic one, size by size. Neither block carries an ISO or EN prefix, and neither names a test method. Both bags are unisex, and Kelty's own support article says unisex bags "often use the lower limit or survival rating" while women's bags are "generally rated for comfort temperature". The standard explains that split in its own annex: the comfort temperature is set where a "standard woman" starts to feel cold, the limit where a "standard man" does. On a unisex bag, then, the printed figure may be a limit rather than a comfort temperature.

One Cosmic page still shows what a filled-in label looks like. The prior-year Cosmic Synthetic 40, out of stock on 2026-09-25 with a $89.95 compare-at and a $71.96 selling price, lists "ISO Temp Rating (Comfort): 37° / 3°C" and "ISO Temp Rating (Limit): 27° / -3°C" for both sizes. Ten degrees separate that pair, and the 40 in the bag's own name sits three degrees above its comfort figure. Kelty's spec template can tell the two ratings apart; these two 20s leave it blank. The standard's 2016 first edition also set what a labeled bag carries: the ISO 23537-1 reference and a range graph giving all four temperatures in °C.

The standard behind such a label, ISO 23537-1:2022, covers requirements, test methods and labeling for adult sleeping bags down to a limit temperature of -20°C, which puts a -7°C bag inside its scope. Its definitions show why the missing word matters: the comfort temperature is where a user lying relaxed on their back reaches the threshold of feeling cold, the limit temperature is that same threshold for a user curled up, and the extreme temperature is where hypothermia becomes a risk. Nothing on either product page says the standard was applied. So compare the two 20s on price, fill, weight and packed size — the temperature name the two bags share cannot rank them.

Six ounces, sixteen ounces of fill, and half the packed volume

At Regular size the two pages differ by very little in weight and by a lot in fill. The down bag is 2 lb 7 oz with 16.4 oz of 550 fill in an 8 by 13-inch stuff sack. The synthetic is 2 lb 13 oz — 6 oz more to carry — with 31.4 oz of CirroLoft ECO inside a compression sack listed as 9.5 by 18 inches stuffed.

Treating each published pack size as a cylinder — pi times radius squared times length — the 8 by 13-inch down sack comes to about 653 cubic inches and the 9.5 by 18-inch synthetic to about 1,276. Both figures are Kelty's own packed sizes; the second is 1.95 times the first, so the synthetic asks for close to twice the room in a pack.

Fill does not convert into warmth on these pages. Kelty's knowledge base defines fill weight as "how much material, in terms of ounces, is put in the bag's shell" and fill power as "a measure of the quality and cubic inches", noting that a higher fill power often means a softer, lighter down. So 16.4 oz of 550 fill and 31.4 oz of CirroLoft ECO are not the same measurement, and neither page turns either into a temperature.

A semi-rectangular cut against a roomier mummy

Kelty calls the down bag Semi-Rectangular and publishes its girth: 62 inches at the shoulder, 58 at the hip, 46 at the foot, 78 inches long, fitting to 6 ft. The synthetic page calls its bag a "lightweight mummy" with a "roomier fit" and publishes length only — 76 inches, fitting to 6 ft, two inches under the down Regular — with no shoulder, hip or foot width for either of its sizes.

Length still settles which size you order. The down bag's Short is 72 inches and fits to 5 ft 6 in at $179.95; its Long is 84 inches and fits to 6 ft 6 in at $209.95. Both pages list a recycled 20D nylon shell with a PFAS-free DWR, dual locking sliders and a zippered stash pocket; the synthetic adds offset quilt construction where the down bag uses trapezoidal baffles.

$80 between the Regulars, and what you could actually order

On 2026-09-25 Kelty listed the down bag's Regular at $189.95, its Short at $179.95 and its Long at $209.95, all three available, with the page headline reading "From $179.95". The synthetic bag showed Regular at $109.95 and Long at $119.95, and only the Long was in stock. No $99.95 Cosmic Synthetic 20 exists in the store's data.

That stock flag decides the comparison. The $80 difference is Regular against Regular, and one of those could not be ordered that day. What you could buy was the synthetic Long: an 84.3-inch bag that fits to 6 ft 6 in and weighs 3 lb 3 oz, at $119.95. The down Long beside it is $209.95 and 2 lb 11 oz — $90 apart, 8 oz apart.

What covers it afterwards, and what a wash costs

Sleeping bags sit in Kelty's lifetime tier: they are "warranted to the original purchaser against manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship for the lifetime of the product", which the page then narrows — "not ... your lifetime, but the reasonable lifetime of the product, considering its age and how you have cared for and used it". Proof of purchase through a seller Kelty authorizes is required, coverage reaches US buyers and Canadian ones where the sale was authorized, and repair or replacement is at Kelty's discretion.

Excluded by name: accident, improper care, negligence, weather-related damage, normal wear and tear, and the natural breakdown of colors and materials over time. Washing is where that exclusion reaches a down bag. Kelty's care article recommends "never washing your bag and spot cleaning/airing out first", sends a wash to a hand tub or an industrial machine, and states that damage caused in that process "is not covered under our warranty". The same knowledge base will not rate a used bag at all: bags, it says, lose warmth as time goes on.
