Kelty Late Start 4P Review: 6 lb 7 oz at $239.95, Against a 12 lb Twin at the Same Price

Kelty's Late Start 4P is a 6 lb 7 oz, 55 sq ft four-person tent at $239.95; Kelty's own Rumpus 4 costs the same and carries 5 lb 9 oz more.

A pitched dome tent photographed from the front left on a plain white background, with a sage-olive upper fly, a white KELTY wordmark printed on a dark navy rectangular patch at the left of the fly, a dark navy lower panel and floor rim, an open door edged with a bright orange zipper, black No-See-Um mesh visible through the doorway with a faint dark Kelty triangle printed on it, a small orange KELTY triangle badge on the lower right navy panel, orange guy-line anchors and hooks where the lines meet the ground on both sides, thin pale guy lines running out to the left and right, and a soft shadow beneath the tent

THE SHORT VERSION

Kelty's Late Start 4P is a three-season, one-door four-person tent listed at $239.95 on Kelty's own store on 2026-09-25, in stock and at full list, with no size or color variant to pick. Its spec block carries a 6 lb 7 oz minimum weight and a 6 lb 15 oz packed weight, a 99 by 80 by 56-inch body over a 55 sq ft floor, a 9 sq ft vestibule, two aluminum poles, and an 18 by 7.5 by 7.5-inch pack. Floor and fly are the same 68D polyester at 1,200 mm, over No-See-Um mesh walls.

The same $239.95 buys Kelty's Rumpus 4. That one lists a 12 lb minimum weight and 13 lb 1 oz packed, three poles, a 58-inch peak, and a floor given as 98 by 88 inches. So the price does not choose for you: it hands you 5 lb 9 oz of weight against more room.

Our verdict

Buy the $239.95 Late Start 4P when you carry the tent or sleep two in it; the Rumpus 4 buys a bigger floor at the same price, and 5 lb 9 oz more weight.

A good fit for
Backpackers and two-person parties who will carry the shelter: 6 lb 7 oz minimum against 12 lb, in an 18 by 7.5 by 7.5-inch pack, for the same $239.95.
We would skip it if
Skip it for car camping or four adults every trip: the Rumpus 4 at the same $239.95 has more floor and a vestibule sized for chairs and dogs.

Reasons to consider it

  • Minimum weight 6 lb 7 oz and packed weight 6 lb 15 oz, against 12 lb and 13 lb 1 oz on Kelty's other four-person tent at the same $239.95
  • Packs to 18 by 7.5 by 7.5 inches on two aluminum poles whose short segments Kelty says fit in bike or motorcycle panniers
  • Floor and fly are both 68D polyester at 1,200 mm with a PFAS-free DWR over No-See-Um mesh walls, the same materials Kelty lists on the Rumpus 4
  • Kelty listed it at $239.95 in stock on 2026-09-25, at full list with no strikethrough price, and the 4P has no size or color variant to choose between

The compromises

  • The 55 sq ft floor and 56-inch peak sit under the Rumpus 4's 60 (98 by 88 inches, which works out to 59.9 sq ft) and 58 inches, at the same price
  • One door and one 9 sq ft vestibule; Kelty calls the Rumpus vestibule extra-large and prints no area for it, so that difference can be read but not measured
  • The fitted 4P footprint is $44.95 on top; Kelty was out of stock on 2026-09-25, and Amazon had one left from Backcountry

What we have not verified: Neither tent page names a test standard behind the 1,200 mm figure, so it cannot be lined up against another maker's hydrostatic head method. The Rumpus 4 page carries no seasons field and no vestibule area, so both its three-season suitability and its vestibule size rest on wording. Every weight, height and floor number in this piece is the maker's.

Late Start 4P Tent · 40820824

Kelty listed it at $239.95, in stock, on 2026-09-25: 6 lb 7 oz minimum, 6 lb 15 oz packed, an 18 by 7.5 by 7.5-inch pack, 99 by 80 by 56 inches over a 55 sq ft floor, a 9 sq ft vestibule, and two aluminum poles.

Before you buy: The Rumpus 4 costs the same $239.95 and gives a taller, larger body — 98 by 88 inches, 58 inches at the peak, three poles, and a vestibule Kelty calls extra-large — for 12 lb minimum. The fitted 4P footprint adds $44.95 and was out of stock at Kelty on 2026-09-25.

Two four-person tents, one price, 89 ounces apart

Kelty sells two four-person tents for exactly $239.95, and on 2026-09-25 both were in stock at that list price. The Late Start 4P is the light one: 6 lb 7 oz minimum and 6 lb 15 oz packed, 99 by 80 by 56 inches over a 55 sq ft floor, two aluminum poles, one door and a 9 sq ft vestibule. The Rumpus 4 trades all of that away for room. It lists 12 lb minimum, 13 lb 1 oz packed, a 58-inch peak, three poles, and a floor given as 98 by 88 inches.

Line the two minimum weights up and 89 ounces separate them — 5 lb 9 oz for the same money. The packed figures sit 98 ounces apart.

What 68D and 1,200 mm actually measure

The fabric question is settled before you choose between the two: both pages print the same spec. Floor and fly are 68D polyester at 1,200 mm, finished with a PFAS-free DWR, and every wall is No-See-Um mesh. The Rumpus page writes the finish as "CO" where the Late Start page writes "C0"; the numbers and the denier are identical.

Kelty's own support answers explain both labels. Denier is "a unit of density based on the length and weight of a fiber", and "generally speaking, the higher the denier count, the more durable the material will be". The millimeter figure is a water column: "a tent with a 1,200mm rating will endure a 1,200mm column of water bearing down on it before it starts to leak", inside a range Kelty gives as 800 mm to 5,000 mm. Useful, and still a maker's figure. Neither help page names a test standard, and neither tent page does.

One door, 9 sq ft of porch, and the Rumpus porch Kelty will not measure

Both tents have a single door, so neither gives four sleepers a second way out. The Late Start 4P pairs that door with a 9 sq ft vestibule. Kelty's copy for the Rumpus 4 pushes the opposite way: an "extra-large vestibule for chairs, gear, dogs, bikes and more", with room in the description for mountain bikes and a cooler.

What the Rumpus page never prints is a vestibule area, and it prints no vestibule count either. So the larger porch is a claim you can read and not a figure you can hold against 9 sq ft. On sleeping floor the gap is narrower than the marketing implies: 55 sq ft against a floor Kelty labels 60.

The $159.95 2P, and a 1P that also exists

The family reaches further down than two models. The Late Start 2P was $159.95 in stock on 2026-09-25, at 4 lb 5 oz minimum, 89 by 54 by 42.5 inches, a 30.6 sq ft floor and a 42.5-inch peak. A Late Start 1P is on the same store at $149.95, three-season, 3 lb 9 oz minimum over 19.7 sq ft. Kelty's own 4P feature list describes the design as "rugged and roomy... for 1P, 2P or 4P", and the 1P listing shows that line describes a current size.

So the $239.95 is $80 above the 2P and $90 above the 1P. For two people the 2P is 34 ounces lighter and $80 cheaper, on 30.6 sq ft of floor against 55.

The $44.95 footprint and what holds up afterwards

Kelty ships the tent with the poles, the pre-attached guy lines, the stakes and a Shark Mouth carry bag, and sells the fitted ground sheet separately. The 4P footprint is $44.95, SKU 46820824, and Kelty had it out of stock on 2026-09-25 while the 2P and 1P versions were available at $34.95 and $29.95. Amazon had the 4P footprint at the same $44.95 that day, sold by Backcountry, with one left.

Warranty terms put tents in the maker's longest tier: the page warrants them against "manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship", setting the term at the product's reasonable working life — spelled out on the same page as "considering its age and how you have cared for and used it" — and the cover stays with whoever bought the tent first rather than following the gear on. Proof of purchase from an approved seller is required. Weather, neglect, accidental damage and ordinary wear are excluded, with animals and fire written into that list too. Coverage runs to US purchases and authorized Canadian sales, and repair or replacement is Kelty's call.

What neither page states

The Rumpus 4 spec block carries no seasons field at all. Every Late Start listing in the family prints "Seasons: 3"; the Rumpus prints poles, pockets, peak height and weights, and stays quiet on the season. Its floor also arrives labeled "60 ft3", cubic feet under a length and width of 98 and 88 inches, a pair that works out to 59.9 sq ft.

Amazon carries the tent under two listings. The older one (ASIN B0HJQM3VNG) showed "Currently unavailable" on 2026-09-25; the 2024 listing (B0CSDYHTJ1) had the 4P at the same $239.95, shipped by Amazon and sold by Kaviso Outdoors, with a 6.5-pound item weight and an 80-inch floor width in its details.
