The Caséta Diva Dimmer: Same 600-Watt Ceiling as the Original, Plus a Preset Level

Lutron's Diva adds a user-set preset level and a finless body to Caséta walls without a neutral wire, for $9.45 over the original that dims the same 600 watts. App and voice still wait for the $99.95 hub.

THE SHORT VERSION

The house was wired before neutral wires reached switch boxes, the chandelier runs on a dimmer, and the wall paddle is the only control anyone touches. Lutron sells three ways to smarten that wall: the Diva Smart Dimmer at $69.40, the original Caséta dimmer at $59.95, and a $99.95 Smart Hub that either paddle needs for app control. A smart bulb is the other route when one lamp is all that needs changing.

Lutron's spec sheet puts both dimmers on one load row — 600 watts of incandescent or halogen, 150 watts of LED — and marks the Diva as a two-wire install that never asks for a neutral. The extra $9.45 buys a user-set preset level the original lacks, not more watts, and the hub bill applies to either paddle equally.

Our verdict

At $69.40 the Diva is the only no-neutral Caséta dimmer with a user-set preset level, but every app and voice feature still waits for the $99.95 hub. Old two-wire boxes install without a neutral.

A good fit for
Homeowners in older houses whose wall boxes lack a neutral wire, especially anyone replacing a dimmer and wanting a preset level plus Pico remotes now, the hub later.
We would skip it if
A single lamp or a rented socket is simpler to fix with a smart bulb; ceiling-fan speed control needs Lutron's separate neutral-wired fan control; low-voltage track or landscape lighting is outside this dimmer's rating; and schedules or voice need the $99.95 hub.

Reasons to consider it

  • Two-wire, no-neutral installation rated for wallboxes down to 2.25 inches deep.
  • The only no-neutral Caséta dimmer whose spec sheet ticks a user-defined preset level: one tap on the paddle turns the light on to the slider's setting.
  • Pairs with up to ten Pico remotes or sensors without a hub, over Clear Connect radio rated to 60 feet line-of-sight.

The compromises

  • The $99.95 Smart Hub sits between this dimmer and every schedule, voice command, and away-from-home control; paired Picos stay local.
  • Load capacity matches the $59.95 original exactly — 600 W incandescent/halogen, 150 W LED — so the price gap buys features, not watts.
  • No fan support: the load table has no fan rating for the dimmer, and Lutron's fan control is a separate device that does require a neutral.

What we have not verified: Lutron's store, the source of the $69.40 white-single price, dropped connections from every channel tried on October 4, so that price is the October 3 reading; Amazon itself sells white only in the $74.20 wallplate bundle.

The things in this guide

A closer look at the products, who they may suit, and what to check before buying.

Lutron Caséta Diva Smart Dimmer Switch
For a house without neutral wires: $69.40 for the Caséta paddle with a preset level, plus $99.95 for the hub when app control matters.

Caséta Diva Smart Dimmer Switch

Lutron's spec sheet rates the two-wire install for boxes down to 2.25 inches and lists a user-defined preset for the Diva and for no other no-neutral Caséta dimmer; the store listed it at $69.40 with add-to-cart on October 3. The catch is capacity: 600/150 watts, the same chart row as the $59.95 original.

Before you buy: App, voice, schedules, and away control all require the $99.95 Smart Hub; without it, control means the wall paddle and up to ten paired Picos. Fan speed control takes a separate, neutral-wired Lutron device.

Two Wires, No Neutral, a 2.25-Inch Box

The Diva needs two wires and no neutral, in a 1-gang box as shallow as 2.25 inches — 3.5 inches recommended. Multi-location is conventional 3-way wiring: the second position can stay a plain mechanical switch, or Lutron's Claro Smart accessory switch (DVRF-AS, itself neutral-free) can take it. None of that needs the hub, and the listing repeats the same wiring promise in its title.

Households already running Caséta can swap the Diva in directly: the same load row as the original dimmer, the same conventional 3-way wiring, and a front-accessible service switch (FASS) for bulb changes. Wallplates cost extra — Lutron points at its Claro plates — and the DVRF body ships finless, so ganged boxes take it without snapping plastic.

Same Load Row as the Original

Lutron's load table lists PD-6WCL and DVRF-6L together: 600 watts maximum for incandescent or halogen, derating to 500 watts end-of-gang and 400 watts middle-of-gang, with a 150-watt ceiling on 120-volt-rated LED in every ganging position. Minimums are 25 watts of incandescent and a single LED bulb. Nothing in the chart rewards paying the extra $9.45 with capacity.

What the money does buy: a user-defined preset. The spec sheet's feature table ticks it for the Diva and leaves it blank for the original PD-6WCL, where among the original dimmers only the neutral-wired PD-5NE has one. Lutron's Amazon gallery spells out the motion: tap once to turn on to the slider preset, double-tap for full on. Add the finless body and the soft glow light bar. ELV loads and power interfaces stay off this model's list; the neutral-wired DVRF-5NE handles those.

Local First, Hub Second

Out of the box the dimmer always operates locally, per Lutron's spec sheet, and pairs with as many as ten Pico remotes and Caséta sensors over Clear Connect radio, rated to 60 feet line-of-sight or 30 feet through walls. Power-failure memory brings the light back to its last level. A Pico by the bed therefore works with no hub and no internet connection.

Everything beyond the wall — schedules, away control, voice, app setup — rides the Smart Hub. The spec sheet allows the Lutron App only via a Smart Hub or Smart Hub PRO, requires the app for hub setup, and caps a hub system at 75 devices. The Amazon listing title for the Diva carries the same gate, '(Smart Hub Required)', and its compatibility line names Alexa, Apple Home, Google Assistant, and Ring.

The Bill, Tier by Tier

Three tiers cover most buyers. The bare Diva at $69.40 is a local paddle: wall control plus up to ten Picos, nothing remote. Add Lutron's $99.95 Smart Hub and the same paddle reaches $169.35; choosing the $59.95 original instead lands at $159.90, from the store's October 3 tags, with the hub cost identical either way. Lutron's Diva-plus-Pico kit (DVRF-6L-WH-R) listed at $84.99, or $184.94 with the hub.

On Amazon, with Amazon as seller and shipper and free 30-day returns, the bare Diva costs $69.95 in black, ivory, or light almond; white comes only as the DVRFW-6L-WH-A wallplate bundle at $74.20. The original PD-6WCL reads $64.95 there against $59.95 at Lutron's store. Lutron's Caséta limited warranty, effective April 1, 2026, runs one year and covers only purchases from Lutron-authorized sellers; the Caséta FAQ still offers a second year for a customer-feedback questionnaire, which the warranty document does not mention.

Where Smart Bulbs Already Do the Job

One lamp, one renter's socket, no dimming ambitions: a smart bulb needs no electrician, no wallbox depth check, and no hub if the bulb has its own radio. The wired route asks more — a breaker turned off, wires landed on a screw, a wallplate bought separately — and repays it wherever a whole fixture must dim from the wall, not a single bulb inside it.

If guests will touch the wall paddle and expect the room to behave — preset level, same brightness every time, no hunting for the right bulb — the wired dimmer is the tool, and the Diva's numbers above set its terms: two wires, 600/150 watts, ten remotes, and one $99.95 hub once app control becomes a requirement.
