MSR Evo Trail Review: One 22-Inch Size, and a $59.95 Tail Above 180 Pounds

MSR's cheapest adult snowshoe sells for $179.95, but it comes in one 22-inch length rated at up to 180 pounds. Above that weight, the $59.95 Evo Tails are part of the purchase — $239.90 for the pair.

THE SHORT VERSION

MSR's Evo Trail is a molded polypropylene deck 22 inches (56 cm) long and 8 inches (20 cm) wide, carrying Martensitic steel traction on Paraglide bindings and weighing 3 lbs 10 oz for the pair. On 2026-09-26 MSR's own store shows it at $179.95 — the bottom of MSR's adult snowshoe line, where only the kids' Tyker ($84.95) and the youth Shift ($129.95) cost less.

Two fixed numbers frame the purchase. Only one length exists — 22 inches — and the deck alone is rated at up to 180 lbs; the $59.95 Evo Tails extend that to up to 250 lbs. A walker near the 180 lb line is choosing between a $179.95 pair and a $239.90 one, and the difference is flotation rather than a different snowshoe.

Our verdict

Buy the $179.95 Evo Trail for flat trails and rolling hills: its single 22-inch deck is rated at up to 180 lbs, and the $59.95 Evo Tails lift that to up to 250 lbs. Steep climbing calls for another snowshoe.

A good fit for
Adults on packed or rolling snow trails weighing up to 180 lbs, or up to 250 lbs with the $59.95 Evo Tails, who want one durable pair.
We would skip it if
Climbers heading up sustained grades, anyone above 180 lbs who will not add the $59.95 tails, and shoppers wanting a women's fit or a longer deck — MSR sells neither in the Evo Trail.

Reasons to consider it

  • $179.95 on 2026-09-26 undercuts every other adult snowshoe MSR lists, with only the kids' Tyker and the youth Shift below it
  • Bindings, straps, pins, and tails are each sold separately, from an $8.95 clevis pin kit to a $42.95 Paraglide binding, so a broken part does not retire the pair
  • A molded polypropylene deck with Martensitic steel traction, which MSR describes as more durable but less grippy than its all-aluminum Lightning decks

The compromises

  • One 22-inch length only, rated at up to 180 lbs, so heavier walkers must buy the $59.95 Evo Tails to reach up to 250 lbs
  • The US version has no heel lift — 'Televator: No' — while the European model of the same snowshoe ships with one
  • The three-year warranty covers only the original purchaser with proof of purchase; normal wear, puncture, abrasion, misuse, alteration, and abuse are excluded

What we have not verified: MSR publishes no figure for how much flotation the 6-inch Evo Tails add on soft snow, only the weight rating they unlock. Whether a US listing will ever carry the European heel-lift build is unstated, and Amazon itself listed the Midnight pair at $167.47 on 2026-09-26, with third-party sellers listing the Evo Tails at $54.95.

MSR Evo Trail Snowshoes
The cheapest MSR adult snowshoe, sized by a single deck and a $59.95 tail

Evo Trail Snowshoes

$179.95 (2026-09-26, MSR's own store) buys a molded polypropylene deck 22 in / 56 cm long with Martensitic steel traction and Paraglide bindings, rated at up to 180 lbs. Walkers above that weight should price the $59.95 Evo Tails in from the start — they lift the same deck to up to 250 lbs and bring the pair to $239.90.

Before you buy: Only one length exists, the US deck has no heel lift, and the three-year warranty covers the original purchaser only, with wear, puncture, abrasion, misuse, alteration, and abuse excluded.

One 22-inch deck and the 180-pound rating

The Evo Trail comes in one size. MSR lists it at 22 in / 56 cm long and 8 in / 20 cm wide, with no longer variant in the length selector, and the same Tech Specs row rates the load at 'Up to 180 lbs'. That one deck carries a unisex, average-width binding across shoe sizes 3 M to 13 M, so length and load — not foot size — decide who fits.

The 180 lb figure is an up-to rating for the deck alone; 250 lbs is the up-to rating with tails fitted. A walker near or above the first number has no longer deck to step up to, and the product page offers no second length to buy later.

MSR's own sizing guidance leans on that gap: 'The idea is to find the smallest possible snowshoe that matches your needs… Should you find yourself on the cusp between sizes, always go with the smaller one and then simply add tails for added flotation as needed.' For the Evo Trail the cusp is the only option — there is one length, and the Evo Tails do any stretching.

The $59.95 Evo Tails sit inside the decision

Evo Tails are a separate $59.95 pair, not part of the snowshoe. Each tail runs 6 in / 15 cm, weighs 12 oz / 340 g per pair, carries SKU 05650, and is built from steel and polypropylene. Fitting them moves the same deck from up to 180 lbs to up to 250 lbs. For a heavier walker the $179.95 is an entry point rather than the total: the pair lands at $239.90.

Weight is the trade. The tails add 12 oz per pair to a snowshoe rated at 3 lbs 10 oz for the pair, and steel-and-plastic modules ride on the back of each deck while you walk. They sit at the cheap end of MSR's tail range — Revo Tails run $79.95 and Lightning Tails $99.95 — with one stated limit: 'Evo tails not compatible with Denali snowshoes.'

No heel lift on the US version

The US Evo Trail carries no heel lift. The Tech Specs row reads 'Televator: No', and MSR positions the shoe for 'Easy to use, durable and comfortable for flat trails or rolling hills.' Sustained climbs are walked flat, with no raised bar under the heel to ease the calf.

The European version of the same model is built differently. Cascade Designs lists the EU Evo Trail with 'Televator: Yes' across sizes (SKUs 13631-13633), at 3 lbs 12 oz / 1.71 kg and assembled in Ireland, under a heel-lift heading the American listing never shows: 'Uphill Efficiency: Televator heel lifts reduce fatigue…' In the US, MSR's heel lift starts on the Evo Ascent, from $259.95, whose page lists Televator heel lifts.

The plastic deck against MSR's all-aluminum Lightning

The Evo Trail's deck is molded polypropylene with Martensitic steel traction. MSR's own comparison FAQ sets that against the all-aluminum Lightning line: 'the plastic-deck Evo and Revo snowshoes are a bit more durable while the all-aluminum Lightning snowshoes offer our absolute greatest level of traction', adding 'These plastic decks also allow for greater flex underfoot while hiking.'

The ladder above it is steep. Past the $179.95 Evo Trail sit the Revo Trail at $219.95 and the Evo Explore at $229.95 (both sold out on MSR's store on 2026-09-26), Evo Ascent from $259.95, and the Lightning Trail at $289.95, running to Lightning Ascent at $399.95. Only the Lightning models switch to the all-aluminum frame MSR credits with its greatest traction; the Evo and Revo steps above the Trail keep a plastic deck.

Replaceable parts and a three-year warranty for the first buyer

Wear parts are sold individually. The Paraglide Binding - Evo Trail is $42.95, a DuoFit Binding $41.95, the Paraglide Binding Mesh Strap Kit $34.95, the Snowshoe Maintenance Kit $19.95, the Classic Snowshoe Strap Kit $19.95, Standard Strap Keepers $9.95, and a Clevis Pin Kit $8.95. A binding failure does not retire the deck.

Coverage runs three years and does not follow the pair to a second owner. MSR's warranty reads: 'So long as you are the original purchaser, and you use your MSR product for the use it was intended … we warrant your product to be free from defects in materials and workmanship for three years.' Filing requires the receipt — 'please attach your proof of purchase and a detailed description of the issue' — and 'Normal wear, puncture, abrasion, misuse, alteration and abuse are not covered.' A secondhand pair carries no warranty.

When to skip the Evo Trail

Skip the Evo Trail if you sit above 180 lbs and will not add the tails — the deck alone is rated below you. The $59.95 Evo Tails lift the same shoe to up to 250 lbs, so the weight limit is a spending decision rather than a dead end.

Skip it as a climbing snowshoe. MSR weighs the Evo Trail for 'flat trails or rolling hills', and the US version has no heel lift to cut the angle of a long ascent. For routes that point steadily uphill, the Evo Ascent at $259.95 is the first US model with the heel lift.

A women's-specific fit is another reason to look elsewhere. MSR lists no Women's Evo Trail; the gait is 'Unisex / average width' across shoe sizes 3 M to 13 M, and the women's builds start with the Women's Revo Trail at $219.95 and the Women's Evo Explore at $229.95. There is also no deck shorter than 22 inches.
