The Rocketbook Core Next Gen is a reusable notebook: 32 letter-size pages of synthetic paper that you write on with a Pilot FriXion pen, scan to cloud services, then wipe clean with a damp towel and use again. The letter-size dot-grid version in black (SKU CRLTDT-ENAM-BLK-01) lists at $38.99 on Rocketbook's own site, and sold for $26.99 by Amazon itself (ASIN B0DP3JMP14) when checked on 2026-09-26.
Two other facts shape the price. The paper erases only FriXion ink, so every pen after the included one is a FriXion pen, and Rocketbook's FAQ says it offers no warranties, though it replaces manufacturer defects and shipping damage. Meanwhile Rocketbook's store is clearing the previous Core at 75 percent off in the cart.
Our verdict
Buy the Core Next Gen on Amazon at $26.99 if you draft by hand and will write with FriXion pens, or the previous Core at $9 on Rocketbook's final sale to try the format; skip both if your notes must survive heat.
- A good fit for
- Heavy drafters who fill notebooks with throwaway pages, want scans in the cloud instead of a shelf of finished pads, and will write with the FriXion pens the paper requires.
- We would skip it if
- Anyone attached to their own pen (non-FriXion ink will not erase), anyone writing long-term archival notes (FriXion ink turns invisible with heat), and buyers who want a warranty rather than a defect-only replacement policy.
Reasons to consider it
- $26.99 with Amazon as both seller and shipper and a month to return it, $12 under Rocketbook's own $38.99, checked 2026-09-26
- 32 letter-size dot-grid pages erase with a damp towel and get reused; one Pilot FriXion pen and a microfiber towel are included
- 24 variants in one generation: Letter or Executive sizes, dot grid or lined, six colors — the format choice costs nothing extra within a size
- The previous Core, same page count, pen and towel, came to $9.00 in Rocketbook's cart as a final sale
The compromises
- Rocketbook's FAQ says it offers no warranties and no replacements for wear and tear; it replaces manufacturer defects and shipping damage at its support team's discretion
- The paper only erases Pilot FriXion ink, so every later pen is a FriXion: $5.97 for a 3-pack at Amazon, $9.00 for three from Rocketbook
- Buyers reviewing on Rocketbook's own site report slow-drying ink smearing onto facing pages and pages writing less cleanly after repeated wiping
- The company is running an acquisition banner and a final-sale clearance, with no stated plan for support or supplies afterward
What we have not verified: Rocketbook's product page does not list a weight. Shipping on a $9.00 Final Few order sits below the store's $45 free-shipping line and was not priced, and the acquisition banner gives no detail on what happens to support after the sale closes.
The things in this guide
A closer look at the products, who they may suit, and what to check before buying.

Core (Next Gen) · Letter, Dot Grid, Black
Amazon itself sold the black letter dot-grid Core Next Gen for $26.99 on 2026-09-26, $12 under Rocketbook's price, and accepts it back for 30 days; one FriXion pen and a microfiber towel ship with it, and the 32 dot-grid pages wipe clean with water.
Before you buy: Only Pilot FriXion ink erases from the pages, so pens are a standing cost ($5.97 for three at Amazon), and buyers on Rocketbook's own site report ink smearing before it dries.

The Core Next Gen is the 2025 refresh of Rocketbook's reusable notebook. The letter size measures 8.5 by 11 inches with 32 dot-grid pages; the smaller Executive runs 6 by 8.8 inches with 36 pages, lined or dot grid, and each size comes in six colors — 24 variants in one generation. The black letter dot-grid under review here carries SKU CRLTDT-ENAM-BLK-01.
The workflow is the product itself: write with the included Pilot FriXion pen, scan the page to a cloud destination, then erase. Rocketbook's spec block puts it plainly: "Pages are erasable with a towel & a bit of water." The contents list is equally plain: "Includes 1 Pilot FriXion pen and 1 microfiber towel. Spray bottle not included." Wet the towel, wipe the page, start over.
Rocketbook's FAQ answers the pen question directly: other pens "will not wipe off the page," while any FriXion pen, marker or highlighter works. The included pen is a 0.7 mm black FriXion.
The price picture: $26.99 at Amazon, $38.99 from the maker
Rocketbook sells the letter-size Core Next Gen at $38.99 and the Executive at $34.99 on its own storefront, and the letter-size notebook took no discount in the cart on 2026-09-26. On Amazon the same day, the black letter dot-grid Next Gen sold for $26.99, with Amazon shipping and selling it and taking it back for a refund or a replacement within 30 days; other letter colors listed at $26.99 and the pink at $25.01. That is $12 under the maker's price for the same notebook.
One caution at Amazon: old and new generations are interleaved in search results, and some Next Gen listings come from third-party sellers — the lined black letter listing was sold by ELAN Publishing Company at the same $26.99. The Next Gen listings open their feature list with "New and Improved Core"; the previous generation's listings do not.
Rocketbook's own site carries that previous generation as "Rocketbook Core - Final Few (Final Sale)," listed at $35.99 for letter size and $32.99 for Executive under a line reading "Last Chance - 75% off applied in cart." In a cart on 2026-09-26, the black letter dot-grid version came to $9.00 before shipping, and the store's banner puts free shipping at $45. It is sold with no returns or exchanges, and it has the same page counts, pen and towel as the Next Gen, without the reworked paper, cover and Smart Titles. At $9 it is the lowest-cost route into the format; the $26.99 Amazon copy buys the newer paper and a return window.
FriXion pens are the running cost
The notebook comes with one FriXion pen. After that, Amazon itself sold a black Pilot FriXion Clicker 3-pack for $5.97 on 2026-09-26. Staples listed its assorted-color Clicker 3-pack at $9.99, other Clicker 3-packs at $7.99 and a 3-pack of FriXion refills at $5.99, and Rocketbook's own store sells three pens for $9.00 or a single capped pen for $3.00.
At Amazon prices, $26.99 for the notebook plus $5.97 for the 3-pack comes to $32.96 for the notebook and four pens. What the lock-in costs is choice: a favorite pen stays home, because nothing but FriXion ink wipes off these pages.
The ink has a second property buyers should know before committing, and here Pilot's own words carry the claim. Pilot's FriXion page describes the ink as thermo-sensitive: rubbing with the eraser heats it past 60°C and it turns invisible; below −10°C it reappears. Pilot's own FAQ warns that notebooks left near heaters or in a car on a hot day can lose their writing to heat alone. That is what makes the notebook erasable, and it is also why FriXion pages are a poor medium for anything meant to be archived.
No warranty, a defect policy, and a new owner
Rocketbook's FAQ answers the warranty question in two parts. First, verbatim: "We do not offer any warranties, nor do we offer replacements for wear and tear or damage from standard use." Then it adds replacements "for manufacturer's defects and items damaged in shipment, as determined by our support team," with photos and proof of purchase required, and returns of unopened, unused products bought on its site within 30 days. By that wording, pages that write less cleanly after repeated wiping count as wear and tear.
The second signal sits on the homepage, where a banner reads "Rocketbook Acquired by Global Printing & Packaging" beside "Take 75% Off Final Few Items." The site is silent on what the sale means for support or for the supply of pens, covers and accessories afterward.
Buying from Amazon puts Amazon's 30 days of returns ahead of Rocketbook's own defect process, which is the better position while the company changes hands. The $9 Final Few copy is a final sale, with no return window at all.
What the Next Gen changes — and what buyers complain about
Rocketbook's own NEW block credits the generation with a premium reusable paper that improves pen feel, a scratch-resistant cover, and Smart Titles and Smart Tags for filing scans. Those are the maker's words for its own refresh, so read them as claims, not findings.
More informative are the complaints on the same page. In reviews dated 2025-11, buyers describe the new paper drying FriXion ink slowly enough to smear onto the facing page, and pages writing less cleanly after repeated wiping. Reviews hosted on a manufacturer's own storefront are a selected sample, so the safe reading is narrow: slow drying and degraded writability exist as issues at least some owners hit.
Practically, that means closing the notebook on fresh ink is asking for a mirrored smudge, and pages that have been wiped many times may not write like new ones. Neither is disqualifying for a draft notebook. Both argue against treating the Core as a permanent archive.
Other reusable options
Outside Rocketbook, two reusable writing tablets sit at other price points. Boogie Board's Blackboard Smart Scan, letter size, listed at $39.95 at Barnes & Noble and was out of stock online on 2026-09-26. reMarkable's Paper Pure starts at $399 on reMarkable's shop page with its marker included, about 15 times the Core's Amazon price.
When to skip it
Skip the Core if you have a pen you love. The pages erase FriXion ink only, and every other pen writes permanent marks on a notebook whose whole point is reuse.
Skip it for anything archival. Pilot's own FAQ says heat alone — a page left near a heater or in a hot car — can make FriXion ink invisible, and Rocketbook's customers report smearing before pages dry — drafts, meeting scribbles and to-do lists fit; records do not.
Skip the Next Gen, too, if you only want to test the format: the previous Core at $9.00 on final sale costs a third as much, provided a notebook you cannot return is acceptable.
