In this guide
FastTrack is Rubbermaid's garage wall system: a horizontal steel rail screwed to the studs, and hooks, baskets, shelves and cabinets that hang from a lip along its top edge and slide sideways until you lock them. The 5-Piece Starter Kit, model 1784417, is the smallest way in. You get one 32-inch rail, four hooks and a hardware pack, in black steel, at 32.5 by 6.38 by 3.56 inches and 3.09 lb boxed. Rubbermaid's site shows no price; on September 11, 2026 Amazon listed the kit at $71.50, sold by Amazon.com.
The right way to read the kit is as a rail with samples attached. The rail is the part that matters, because everything else Rubbermaid sells under the FastTrack name hangs from it, and the four hooks are there to prove the idea. Whether the kit is worth buying comes back to the wall you have and how many more accessories you will end up adding, since each one is a separate line on the receipt.
Our verdict
A sensible first purchase for a garage wall with 16-inch stud spacing and a mixed pile of rakes, cords and a ladder: one 32-inch rail, four hooks that slide and lock anywhere along it, the fixings, and a lifetime limited warranty from a company that publishes the terms. It stops being a bargain if the wall needs two rails, because every further hook and rail is bought separately and the kit's hooks are a starter set, not a plan.
- A good fit for
- A homeowner with a drywall-over-stud garage wall who wants to get the long-handled tools off the floor this weekend and add shelves, a bike hook or a second rail later without replacing anything.
- We would skip it if
- Your wall is concrete block or metal-stud, you need more than four things hung, or you prefer to buy a pegboard and forty dollars of hooks than commit to a system priced per accessory.
Reasons to consider it
- Accessories move along the rail without tools and lock in place; locking hooks rated to 50 lb, non-locking to 25 lb
- The rail is the same one the rest of the FastTrack line uses, so shelves, bike hooks and cabinets from the range bolt on later
- Lifetime limited warranty on FastTrack garage items purchased from July 19, 2023, with a published terms document and a US phone line
The compromises
- Rubbermaid's page lists no price and links no retailer, so what you pay depends on where you buy; a 3.0-star average from 38 reviews on rubbermaid.com is not encouraging
- The 1,700 lb capacity is a system figure that assumes the rail is screwed into studs; on 24-inch centers Rubbermaid says the maximum is not reachable
- The manual linked from the page covers the 48-inch rail and shelving, and the page contradicts itself on which hooks are in the box
What we have not verified: The kit was not mounted or loaded here. Rubbermaid's page gives the hook count two ways (one utility, two handle and two scoop hooks in the description; one multi-purpose, one scoop and two handle hooks in the features and included-parts lists) and the capacity two ways (1,750 lb in the features, 1,700 lb in the specifications). The installation figures come from a manual written for the 48-inch rail. Amazon's $71.50 price is a single retailer on a single day.

FastTrack Garage 5-Piece Starter Kit, Black (1784417)
A 32-inch steel rail, a multi-purpose hook, a scoop hook and two handle hooks, the anchors and screws, one-person installation and a lifetime limited warranty; the rail accepts every later FastTrack accessory.
Before you buy: No maker price, hooks that are a starter set, a capacity rating that depends on hitting studs, and a manual on the page written for the 48-inch rail.

Rubbermaid's included-parts list reads: one 32-inch FastTrack garage rail, one multi-purpose hook, one scoop hook and two handle hooks, with a hardware pack. The description paragraph higher on the same page counts it differently, as a utility hook, two handle hooks and two scoop hooks. Both add to five pieces if the rail is one of them, which is how the kit gets its name. The features and specifications agree with the included-parts list, so that is the version to count on, and a buyer who needs two scoop hooks should check the box contents before opening it.
The hooks are the useful part of the demonstration. Handle hooks take shovels, rakes and brooms by the shaft; the scoop hook is shaped for a wheelbarrow lip, a hose or a coiled cord; the multi-purpose hook is the general one. All of them hang from the rail's top lip and slide along it, so a wall can be rearranged without a drill once the rail is up. Rubbermaid rates locking hooks at 50 lb and non-locking ones at 25 lb, and does not say on the kit page which of the four are which.
1,700 lb on paper, and what the manual asks of the wall
The page quotes a system capacity of 1,700 lb in the specifications and 1,750 lb in the features list. Either number describes the FastTrack rail concept, not what four hooks can carry, and it holds only with the rail fastened the way Rubbermaid's instructions describe. The document the page links is written for the 48-inch rail and shelving, not the 32-inch rail in this kit, but the rules transfer: the rail must begin and end on a stud, you drill 1/8 inch pilot holes at each stud for the screws, and between studs you drill 3/8 inch holes every 8 inches for the supplied expanding anchors, set with a key until they snap.
For the 48-inch rail Rubbermaid says four studs are needed for the maximum rating and that the maximum is not possible on 24-inch stud spacing. A 32-inch rail on 16-inch centers can start on one stud, cross a second and end on a third, which is the layout to aim for; on 24-inch centers it spans one bay with a stud at each end and the load rating should be treated as lower. The manual's suggested rail heights are 7 ft 3 in for long-handled tools and 4 ft for a lower run, and it lists a stud finder, a level and a drill as the tools, which is what Rubbermaid's one-person quick-install claim assumes.
No maker price, one retailer figure, and a lifetime term with conditions
Rubbermaid does not sell the kit from its own site and shows no price or retailer links, so the cost is whatever the store you use charges. As a reference point, Amazon listed model 1784417 at $71.50, sold and shipped by Amazon.com, on the day this was checked; hardware stores set their own figures. The kit is the bottom rung of a range that runs to 24-piece bundles, and the rail alone is also sold in longer lengths, which matters because a second rail and a few more hooks can double the outlay quickly.
The warranty is issued by Rubbermaid Commercial Products of High Point, North Carolina, and applies to FastTrack garage products purchased from July 19, 2023 onward. Rubbermaid chooses between repairing and replacing a defect for as long as the product exists, may ask for photographs or the part itself, does not pay cash where a like replacement exists, and does not transfer the coverage to a later owner. The exclusions that matter in a garage are loads above the rated capacity, assembly that departs from the manual, use of non-Rubbermaid structural parts, and commercial use. The original receipt and, if the date differs, the delivery confirmation must accompany a claim.
Skip it if the wall is block, or if you only need four hooks
The FastTrack rail is designed around wood studs behind drywall, and the supplied anchors and pilot-hole sizes reflect that. On a concrete-block or poured wall you will be sourcing masonry fixings on your own and outside the installation the warranty assumes, and on metal studs the screw schedule in the manual does not apply either. A simple bracket or a screwed-on pegboard is the better fit for those walls.
The other case for passing is scale. If four hooks would empty your floor, a set of heavy screw-in utility hooks does the same job for less and needs no rail. The kit pays off when it is the first of several purchases: the bike hook, the wire shelf, the second rail at 4 feet. Buy it if you can picture those, and buy plain hooks if you cannot.
