THE SHORT VERSION

Apple Barrel is Plaid's entry-level craft acrylic, the squat 2 oz bottle sold by the bin at every big-box craft store, and the PROMOABIII set collects sixteen of them for $15.99 direct from Plaid. The colors are White, Black, Flag Red, Jack-o-Lantern, Bright Blue, Candy Pink, Nutmeg Brown, Bright Yellow, New Shamrock, Purple Iris, Too Blue, Fuchsia, Key West, Pewter Grey, Bright Magenta and Parrot Blue. Every one dries matte, all are water-based, and Plaid makes them in the USA.

The pitch for a seasonal crafter is obvious from the names. Jack-o-Lantern plus the Black and the White cover a Halloween table; Flag Red, New Shamrock, White and Nutmeg Brown cover December ornaments and gingerbread houses. The question worth answering is not whether a dollar a bottle is cheap, because it is, but which projects this plain formula suits and when the extra grip of Plaid's FolkArt Multi-Surface line is worth having instead.

Our verdict

The cheapest sensible way to put sixteen matte colors on a holiday craft table, at $15.99 direct from Plaid; keep the plain formula on wood, paper, plaster and foam, and use a multi-surface paint for glass or ceramic.

A good fit for
A household that paints wooden ornaments, salt-dough shapes, foam pumpkins and terra cotta pots with children every fall and winter, and would sooner replace a $1 bottle than ration a $6 one.
We would skip it if
The plan is painted mugs, glass votives or metal tins, you want a satin or gloss sheen straight from the bottle, or you paint on canvas seriously enough to care about lightfastness ratings that Plaid does not publish.

Reasons to consider it

  • Sixteen 2 oz bottles for $15.99 direct, including orange, black, white, red, green and brown, so the seasonal palette is already in the carton
  • Water-based, soap-and-water cleanup while wet, dries to the touch in 15 to 30 minutes and about 8 sq ft per bottle on porous surfaces
  • Made in the USA, in stock at Plaid, and every color in the line is intermixable

The compromises

  • Matte only and porous surfaces only; Plaid's own guidance sends glass, ceramic and metal to the Multi-Surface formula
  • No metallics in the set, where the FolkArt Multi-Surface Celebrations 10-pack includes silver and gold
  • Plaid ships only to US addresses, ground delivery is quoted at 10 to 14 business days, and shipping is only waived from $60

What we have not verified: The paint was not applied here; opacity of the lighter colors over dark bases, how the matte film holds up to handling without a topcoat, and shelf life of an opened bottle were not assessed. Plaid does not state a non-toxicity certification or a full cure time on the set's page.

For a kids' holiday craft table on porous surfaces

Colors Acrylic Paint 16 Color Set (PROMOABIII)

Sixteen matte colors at $15.99, a full seasonal palette out of the carton, soap-and-water cleanup while wet, and coverage Plaid puts at about 8 sq ft per bottle in thin coats on wood, paper and plaster.

Before you buy: Matte only, no metallics, no dishwasher or glass claim, and Plaid's outdoor advice is to topcoat with a clear weather-resistant sealer.

Sixteen matte bottles, and a palette that already leans seasonal

Plaid describes the set as sixteen 2 oz bottles that can be brushed, stamped, stenciled or sponged onto wood, Styrofoam, plaster, terra cotta and similar porous surfaces, drying to a matte finish. At the $15.99 regular price the arithmetic is one dollar per bottle, and Plaid marks the set in stock under SKU PROMOABIII. The bottles are the same size as the singles sold loose, so a color that runs out in December is replaced individually rather than by buying the kit again.

The color selection is what justifies this set over a random handful of singles. Orange plus black plus white make up an entire pumpkin-painting session; red, green, white and brown are most of an ornament session; the blues, pinks and purples take care of spring and birthday tables. What is missing is any metallic, any neon and any glow color, all of which Apple Barrel sells as separate formulas, and a true gray exists only as Pewter Grey, so lighter tones will have to be mixed from the Black and the White.

Dry in half an hour, 8 sq ft a bottle, and a sealer if it goes outside

Plaid's help articles fill in what the set page leaves out. A 2 oz bottle covers up to about 8 sq ft in thin coats on porous surfaces, textured or dark bases take extra coats, most coats are dry to the touch in 15 to 30 minutes, and finished pieces should sit 24 hours before they are stacked or wrapped, longer on slick surfaces. Thin coats are the repeated advice: they avoid ridges, brush marks and stencil bleed, and a sponge should be offloaded onto paper towel until it feels almost dry before it touches a stencil.

Cleanup is soap and warm water before the paint dries on brushes, palettes and hands, which is the main reason this line ends up on children's tables. For anything that lives outdoors, on a porch or in a planter, Plaid's answer is yes with a clear weather-resistant sealer on top and no standing water. All Apple Barrel colors and finishes are intermixable, so the sixteen can be stretched into a wider range, but Plaid does not publish lightfastness ratings or a non-toxicity mark on this set's page, and neither fact was confirmed elsewhere.

Apple Barrel or FolkArt Multi-Surface: pick by the surface, not the price

Plaid's other budget set on this site is the FolkArt Multi-Surface Celebrations 10-pack: the same $15.99 regular, with eight satin colors plus Metallic Silver and Gold. The two overlap on wood, paper and terra cotta and then diverge. The FolkArt formula carries added grip for glass, ceramic and metal, is rated for outdoor use and, once cured, for top-shelf dishwasher washing; the Apple Barrel matte line makes no such claims, and Plaid's own help center routes slick surfaces and high-touch decor to Multi-Surface, ideally under a sealer.

So the decision is about the project, not the tag: both sets list at the same $15.99 regular price. Painted mugs, glass votives, metal tins and ornaments that will be handled for years favor the FolkArt set. Wooden slices, salt-dough shapes, paper garlands, plaster figures and anything a six-year-old will cover in one sitting favor the Apple Barrel set, which offers six more bottles at the same list price and a flatter finish that takes a topcoat well. The sixteen matte bottles are the ones that will empty first.

Ground delivery of 10 to 14 business days, US only, returns for 30 days

Plaid sells direct and only to US addresses, including Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico with expedited-only options. Orders are processed on weekdays, ground delivery is quoted at 10 to 14 business days, expedited at four and express at three, and the two faster services require a signature. Plaid waives shipping at $60, or at $40 for members of its free Plaid Points program, and a $15.99 set on its own falls under both lines, so the realistic order is this set plus brushes, sealer or a second set.

Returns are simple by craft-supply standards: items ordered from Plaid that disappoint can be sent back with the receipt for 30 days and refunded in full for the product's price, started from the My Orders page or a guest form. Damage in transit is a carrier claim, while a defective product is Plaid's problem to solve through its support team. A big-box craft store will often match or beat the direct price on this exact SKU during a sale, so ordering direct makes most sense when the basket clears the shipping line anyway.

Skip it if the surface is slick or the sheen matters

Pass on this set when the holiday project is a mug, a glass ornament, a ceramic tile or a metal lantern. Plaid's own guidance is that the plain Apple Barrel formula belongs on porous surfaces, and its Multi-Surface line, or the FolkArt Multi-Surface set with its own review on this site, is the tool for anything smooth or anything that gets washed. Buying sixteen matte bottles and then fighting adhesion on glass is the usual way to be disappointed by paint that is doing exactly what it says.

Also skip it when the finish has to come straight from the bottle. Everything here dries flat, so a glossy bauble or a satin sign needs a clear topcoat in the sheen you want, which Plaid sells but which adds a step and a purchase. And anyone painting on canvas for keeps should treat this as student paint: Plaid publishes no lightfastness data, and the honest home for it is a craft table where the pumpkins get composted in November and the ornaments are loved for their maker, not their pigment.
