CATAN 6th Edition Review: $39.99 Seats Four, $63.98 Seats Six

The 30th-anniversary base game costs $39.99 at Amazon against a $49.99 list price, needs three players and holds four, and runs about an hour; the publisher says it can be played with fifth-edition sets, though some card backs differ.

THE SHORT VERSION

CATAN is the Klaus Teuber design now in its sixth edition, released on 2025-04-11 as the game's 30th-anniversary printing, published by CATAN Studio (an Asmodee studio) for brand owner CATAN GmbH. The official store lists the base game at $49.99 under SKU C25A-A443; Amazon's own listing (ASIN B0DYK1ZH2D, checked 2026-09-26 from ZIP 10001) had it in stock at $39.99, twenty percent under that list price.

The more practical question for 2026 is the edition. The fifth edition is still for sale on the same Amazon listing as a "5th Edition" style at $39.47, 52 cents less. The publisher's compatibility page says the editions "can be used together," with catches it names itself: some product combinations have distinct card backs, which card sleeves or replacement cards resolve; the wooden road pieces have grown slightly; and the sixth-edition base box "no longer contains port markers."

Our verdict

CATAN's 6th Edition base game is a sound first strategy game at $39.99 (Amazon, checked 2026-09-26) for tables of three and four; five or six players add the $23.99 expansion.

A good fit for
Families and casual groups of three, sometimes four, buying a first strategy board game, and gift buyers who want the current edition of a name the recipient will recognize.
We would skip it if
Your table is usually two players, or a working fifth-edition set is on your shelf and you want nothing beyond card trays and new art.

Reasons to consider it

  • The box is complete: 19 terrain hexes, 6 sea frame pieces, 96 wooden player pieces, 120 cards, a robber, dice and rules, with nothing else to buy for a game of up to four
  • The publisher sells an official replacement card set (95 resource cards plus 25 development cards) for $14.48 at Amazon, so a worn deck does not mean a dead box
  • New in this edition: two card trays in the box, which the publisher describes as consumer-requested

The compromises

  • Player count tops out at four; five or six players need the $23.99 5-6 Player Expansion
  • Some card backs differ from fifth-edition expansions and the roads are slightly larger; the publisher says the editions can be played together, with sleeves or replacement cards for mismatched backs
  • No published warranty: a copy with missing or defective parts is returned to the retailer, and Amazon's window for that is 30 days

What we have not verified: The CATAN Shop product page showed $49.99 on 2026-09-26 while a cached collection page had shown $54.99; this article uses the product page. Box contents come from the publisher's and Amazon's lists, not a physical count.

CATAN: The Game (6th Edition)

At $39.99 against the $49.99 official price, it is the edition the current expansions and replacement cards are printed for, and Amazon sells it directly, returnable for a month.

Before you buy: The base box tops out at four players; a group of five or six needs the $23.99 expansion.

What changed in the sixth edition

The publisher's pitch for the new printing, quoted verbatim from its own product page: "Completely redesigned packaging… overhauled rulebook… brand-new component art featuring inclusive characters," plus "New edition adds consumer-requested card trays!" Of the changes listed there, the card trays are the only new component; the rest is art, packaging and rulebook.

The compatibility page fills in the rest. Every CATAN game got new box sizes, box art, internal art and rulebook layouts; the wooden roads are slightly larger; the 5-6 player expansions swap brown for purple as one of the added colors; and the base box "no longer contains port markers," with the page pointing players who want port tokens to the Seafarers expansion. A fifth-edition expansion therefore still plays with this base game, with mismatched card backs in some combinations and roads of two sizes on the board.

For a gift, the 52 cents separating the two listings matter less than what is on the recipient's shelf. The sixth edition brings the trays and the new art; the fifth keeps its card backs matched to older expansion cards. The publisher also sells replacement cards so older sets can match the new backs.

What is in the box, and what wears out

The CATAN Shop's contents list reads: 6 sea frame pieces, 19 hexes, 2 bonus victory point tiles, 18 number discs, 4 player aids, 120 cards, 2 dice, 1 robber, 96 player pieces and 2 card trays. Amazon's box list adds that the player pieces are wooden, 24 in each of four colors. The box itself is 29.9 by 29.6 by 9.8 cm and 1.4 kg per Asmodee UK's page for item CN3081, a square shelf box.

Replacement parts exist for the cards. The publisher's official Base Game Card Accessory for this edition — 95 resource cards plus 25 development cards — was $14.48 on Amazon on 2026-09-26, with Amazon itself as seller, and CATAN Studio's support page points owners who lose or wear out pieces to replacement card decks at CatanShop.com, an authorized Etsy shop, or a used copy bought for parts.

No warranty is published for the game. What covers a bad copy is the seller: CATAN Studio's support page says a new game that is missing pieces or is defective should be returned to the retailer for a replacement copy. On this listing, where Amazon is the seller, that means Amazon will refund or replace it for 30 days. At the CATAN Shop, unopened games can be returned for up to 90 days, and for a damaged or defective product the shop asks for photos by email and sends a prepaid return label.

The player count, and what a fifth seat costs

Asmodee UK lists 3 to 4 players, age 10 and up, 60-plus minutes (Amazon's title says 60 to 90, which is the figure to budget with new players), and neither listing gives a two-player count. Five or six players need the 5-6 Player Expansion for this edition, $23.99 at Amazon on 2026-09-26, which brings a six-seat setup to $63.98.

The publisher promises you can "learn the basics in 15 minutes" and "never play the same game twice" — its words, quoted from the product page — and the variable hex board backs the second claim. Neither promise changes the seat count: a couple needs a game listed for two, and a family of five needs the $23.99 expansion.

Three alternatives start lower on the count. Ticket to Ride's 2025 Refresh covers 2 to 5 players, ages 8 and up, in 30 to 60 minutes, at the same $39.99, sold by Amazon. Wingspan plays 1 to 5 in 40 to 90 minutes and was $55 direct from Stonemaier against a $65 compare-at price. Carcassonne plays 2 to 5 in about 35 minutes for $31.99 on Amazon against a $41.99 list. Of the four, CATAN is the only one that needs three players to start and an add-on to seat a fifth.

New buyer or old owner: which edition to buy

New to the game: the sixth edition at $39.99 is 20 percent under the official $49.99 and 52 cents over the outgoing fifth edition, and it is the edition the current expansions and the $14.48 replacement card set are printed for.

Own the fifth edition already, with expansions: keep it. The publisher says the editions can be played together, so a new base box buys the trays and the art rather than access to anything. The exception is a worn-out copy; there, the $39.99 sixth edition replaces it, and any sixth-edition expansion bought later will share its card backs.
